This is the second time in the past few days that someone took a quote out of context here in the rumor mill to try to 'be right'...but since it was not in the context of its sentence, they were quite wrong.
The quote is:
it always works differently no matter what colors your deck has in it.
which means you can run it in any deck, but the more colors you have, the more options you have. It doesn't mean these are colorless activations.

I don't see why that's wrong; it does something different no matter what colors your deck uses, so ... I mean, it fits.
As for playability in constructed, 8 mana up front for one ability is pretty steep. A ramp deck might use it I guess ... But it just seems like they have better options to ramp into than this.
In 5c Blue with a Etherium Sculptor or two down it looks like it might have some potential.
I'm currently running an Esper aggro build that I could putting this into as a board clearer/control option, even without adding the Monstrous Growth and Lash Out abilities.

I might run one in my ramp deck just to be a jerkface. Always have plenty of spare mana lying around.
By the way, the version in the first post is 100% correct, and I am adding it to the spoiler now.

If I'm going to pay 6 ( or UUBBBRR ...) in Constructed, it better win me the game the turn I cast it.
But in Limited, I'd pull that pretty fast, actually. You be almost guaranteed to be able to abuse at least 3 or 4 of the abilities by the time you could play it, and each one of those abilities is really solid.
Just a note, it isn't mythic or legendary...it is the release promo, which is a rare.
Why do you say it's a rare? Did I miss something in that regard? Sure, Alara isn't a great basis for this statement, but it was Mythic... Also, didn't WOTC say all the Pre-/Release promos were going to be mythics, or do I need to run defrag on my memory?
So ends the streak of moderately to playable prerelease cards. Or is this only for the release parties? Still, as a Staff of Domination fan, I'm really unimpressed.
I was hoping for a not broken-but highly playable mana rock, considering its name and the quality of cards before it like Ajani, Figure, Korlash.
I'm a fan...this will go in my Sunburst or Scarecrow deck for sure as a 1-of...I like cards like this that are pretty versatile, even if they aren't insanely powerful

WoTC didn't say anything actually. They recently changed release promos to rares, so the unstated assumption was that Prereleases get Mythics, releases get rares.
Of course, this card could easily be a mythic rare.
There is no real reason to make it legendary though IMO.

Oh man, I'd like to find some way to discard this efficiently then Sharuum it back. Especially if I can discard both it and Sharuum early then just Mannequin at an opportune time.
This Obelisk should've been costed at :5mana:. It would've been more characterful (5cc for all five colors of mana; each individual shard's obelisk costs 3 and relates to three colors of mana), and also more tempting for constructed play without being overly potent.
But this card will be an absolute house in Limited.

Love. Forgive. Trust. Be willing to be broken that you may be remade.
Is it just me, or does 6 feel too heavy? Or is it just right for this environment? I think this is a great Esper artifact with the etherium sculptor, or some other card that reduces the cost. This can be dangerous in a 5 color extended elf deck (priest of titania).
for those of us playing prismatic--or for anyone playing a 5-color deck in any format--this card is house. it might not be tournament-worthy, but you best believe the people in my group with big huge prismatic decks will be fetching up a copy of this.

What I don't get is why it would have the -2/-2 effect and the 3 damage to a creature effect. If it was creature or player it would make more sense to me, but as is, I feel like the two abilities are to similar.

I feel the same way. A fun card for pretty much anything outside of vanilla Standard, but those abilities are boringly similar.

This makes me wonder if it's supposed to be player, to be honest. The benefit to Lash Out was that it hit the controller too.
I thought that the Obelisk was the shard obelisks coming together, so this card was... unexpected. I figured it to be like a Gilded Lotus with it making a shard's colors for 5.
Great in limited, I'd love it if I was in R or B as those sides would demolish a board, especially if they had a bunch of small esper creatures.
Absolutely bonkers in limited, regardless of the shard, regardless of the archetype. Every color (sans white, of course, SOMEONE has to get the shaft) got a kick ass ability. The black is absolutely _sick_. -2/-2 for just two mana, for the rest of the game? Good lord.
So first pick in draft always and something similar to Sigil of Distinction in sealed (i.e. Super Bomby with Bomb Sauce).

The difference is that the -2/-2 effect will save your creature when it blocks or is blocked. For example, if you block your opponent's 4/4 with your 3/3, then the -2/-2 effect will save your creature AND kill your opponent's creature, while the 3 damage won't. On the other hand, they have the red ability deal 3 damage rather than 2 so that the black ability isn't strictly better.
