Okay stupid question forthcoming...never been to a PR. Do you get the playmat for signing up for the PR or something?
It varies depending on your tournament organizer. Some sell them, some give them away. I go to the Star City prereleases, and you'd get a mat for playing a second (or more) flight. If there's no second flight, I'm not sure how they'll do it.

Now for a silly question what is a "flight" in magic terms?
Basically a tournament. There will be different 'flights' throughout the day, due to some filling up, or some being different types (such as Two-Headed Giant).
• The chance to play with the newest cards before they’re available for sale!
• Participants get a Foil Alternate Art Ajani Vengeant* Mythic Rare Card.
• Prizes for top finishers!
• New players!
• The chance to play as long as you like – for a few hours or all day!
Shards of Alara Launch Parties, October 3-5 2008!
• Get the newest cards the moment they are released.
• Participants get a Foil Alternate Art Ajani Vengeant* Mythic Rare Card.
• Meet new players in your area!
My local shop received their prerelease tournament pack. Product that arrived was two boxes of starters and 2 boxes of boosters (along with prerelease cards, a few of the new "starter packs", pens, notepads, etc.). If this is the standard, that means that wizards is NOT providing any prize support. This may just be an isolated incident but let's hope that WOTC hasn't changed their prior support option.

Odd. they were supposed to get prize support. We got 4 boxes of it. With 8 boxes total allowed and ordered for te event both days. WOTC told us that for every 2 boxes you order of boosters, you get 1 box of boosters as prize support. Granted, they only allow you to order so much. Did they order direct from wotc or someone else? We went directly through wotc.

Same here, product for the event itself arrived on Wednesday (enough for 48x2 and the prize/support boosters and the intro sets) and the actual kits were 2 weeks ago (which contained no product, but enough stuff like pens, table numbers (nice touch), foils, etc). This is also direct from WotC...
Here's my understanding as to what store level pre-releases are capable of doing:
Most stores will have a 24 person cap, but this cap is dependent on how much product was made available to the the organizer.
Organizers are limited to one pack per player per pre-release kit ordered with a max of 36 packs per pre-release kit ordered to be given out as prize. This limit applies to Shards of Alara packs. You may give out additional non-ALA packs as prize, or offer ALA packs as prize to be picked up no earlier than 10/3. This prize is from the booster boxes WotC is providing and is to be split between players and volunteers (these boxes should be split 24 players/12 volunteers).
Remaining product may not be used until 10/3.

Just out of curiosity, where was this information from? Not that I doubt you, I'm just curious predominantly because of the bolded part. I just didn't expect a response of "prizes on credit".
I was talking with Linda Roberts for a while asking for clarification (the existing documentation has been confusing). The bolded part comes from Andy's post on DCIJUDGE-L:
Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2008 16:01:09 -0700
From: "Heckt, Andy" <Andy.Heckt@WIZARDS.COM>
Subject: Re: Shards of Alara Informational Overview
FYI - As there is some confusion:
To be clear (as bulletted later in the original under "extra prizes") =
Locations may not add more prerelease product as prizes. They may give =
other prizes, already release product, or they may give store credit / =
coupons for redemption after release, etc... for Shards product.
* For every 24 players, there is a box of prize and compensation
boosters (24 for players, 12 for staff). It is perfectly fine for a
store to provide additional prizes.=20
- It's ok to offer extra prizes. If a store has given out all its
prize packs, having players come back after the release date to pick up
added Shards is fine.
- Any product intended for players in the Prerelease that is left
over is held until the release date (October 3), and then it can be sold
as normal.

I'll be sitting this one out. Probably all of them from now on, as well. Which sucks, because prereleases are the only Magic I play anymore, aside from a little casual. Guess it's just kitchen table games every few months from here on out!
Honestly, this whole system just continually gets worse. Especially considering that the set is legal in Standard a week after the pre-release. Basically the only way to be able to play with new cards relatively soon is to buy boxes? It's complete ********. I'll go to this PR at the local store, to see how it goes, but there is a very high possibility that it will be the last one I go to.

Did you notice the prize structure for these? Let's do a comparison (this is what really ticks me off about this):
Eventide Prerelease ($30 entry):
4-0: 18 packs
3-0-1: 12 packs
3-1-0: 6 packs
2-1-1: 3 packs
2-2-0: 1 pack
I'm hoping they have challenge round packs or something to make up for HALF THE PRIZES. I understand that more smaller stores = more competition = less participants, but seriously, half the prizes for the same price?
yeah, it's not really the stores' fault for the crappy prize support, WOTC has really scaled it back. every day we get a new email saying "now rememebr you can't use your extra alara tourney product as prize support".
c'mon wotc, how are people supposed to keep customers coming back to these things if you don't give us any room to actually give them incentive? far as i'm concerned, we paid for x amount of boxes, if only y people show up and we have extra, why can't we give it to them? why do we have to wait until the release to allow them to pick it up? do you think it's going to flood the market so that people won't come to the launch party? I got news for you wotc- they already aren't going to come because it's only a WEEK after the prerelease and they can't afford to hit both.
There is a pre-release tournament in South Africa, Johannesburg specifically. We not doing it at any Convention nor store, We do it at a location that nationals are held every year - does that mean it's bigger than a store and smaller than what gray-matter would hold? What would be the procedure here? 24 player cap where the event WILL without a doubt generate 50-75 people? HUH?!?
I don't understand WTF WOTC is trying to do... Are they trying to bring magic to new players or NOT huh??
My stores not doing the 4-0-0, 3-0-1, 3-1-0, what ever break down. According to the owner it's supposed to be point based. Yeah the points tend to end up going like the above, but not always. If fact, according to him the prize for going three and a tie should be the same at the prize for going 3 and a loss, because you don't get enough points to go to the next level. Additionally, he said the prize support will be given out based on the points until all product is gone. So if you end up with s 4-0's everyone else will get less prize, but if that guy that plays down losses, everyone below gets more prize.
Yeah the whole thing is whack, but I look at it like this. There are only 5 days inbetween the PR (sat) and the release (fri). So really playing in the PR is just like paying extra for product now (something I'm sure a lot of you would do if you could/do if you can). Heck we even get an extra pack for this one. I don't expect to get my money's worth out of it, I only expect to pay a premium to get some early play in. It's the same principle with other stuff. You can skip the long line and get your movie tickets earlier by paying more on Fandango right? Same thing.
Also, if store were really worried about people not filling the 24 player cap becuase of low prize support (which I don't think will be a problem for most) they can always offer additional support themselves in the form of store credit or something so players get get the extra packs later. Maybe offer the overall winner free entry into the release event (or if you want new players give it to the person who was at rock bottom).
I don't know how this is all gonna pan out, but I do know that tomorrow is gonna be interesting.

That isn't what it says.
It says that there is one box of prizes per 24 players.
My local store is getting a 48 player cap, which they won't reach.
I am going to the big prerelease though.
