Canopy Dragon (Woohoo first mono green dragon in MTG!)
I would have loved to seen Canopy Dragon also.
I think many are scratching their heads re Dragon Whelp.
Eternal Dragon would have rocked too - and like another said, who cares that it is a judge's promo. A very small percntage of people are judge's. What about the rest of us?

"It's worked so far, but we're not out yet." ~ Bones
There are three, actually.
1) Really, really cool artwork.
2) He's big, evil, and shoots a blue laser out of his mouth.
3) There are only a very few out there, and a LOT of people collect Dragons.
It could be 4/3 and cost more, it wouldn't hurt the demand for the card.

4) He's been errata'd to become actually useful. Now he forces a discard when coming into play FROM ANYWHERE.
Draco and Dragon Whelp are quite a turn off (although at least the Whelp is cute), as is the lack of Eternal Dragon...... Like most Magic pre-made sets, this is a mixed bag....
Well, at least for an expensive box, this has some money-eaters: Koko, Nivvy, Bogardan, but that's still a bit insufficient for the total value probably........
And the Hellkite Overlord pretty much scream Timmy

Actually, he has always been that way. Portal cards were printed with a "from your hand" clause to try to prevent confusion in brand new players, which is who the set was intended to be sold to. Just like the Sorceries that say "can be played on an oppoent's turn" and other (imo) really stupid wording. But the oracle wording has never included the "play from your hand" wording.
For bonus gibberish, check out this article I wrote when Portal first became legal. The entry for Ebon Dragon is pretty funny and so is the artwork someone attached for me
I am actually quite liking Hellkite Overlord...the Green makes absolutely no sense to me except for the whole Shard thing, but Dramatic Entrance anyone? And if the FNM policy holds true, EoT Thirst for Knowledge to hit it up with a Mannequin? (Or possibly some solid Zombify variant)
I feel cheated that not all the cards got new art, but...there is a Bogardan Hellkite in there. Does the new foiling process keep the cards flat? I'm wondering about that too.
Can someone comment on the new foiling process? Particularly, how it compares to the old foiling process, and whether or not it curves with heat. Early reports show that it's really not that fantastic, but I would like to hear some more comments.

It really doesn't look all that different to me. And if anything, the curling is a little worse.
Ok, that's pretty upsetting, I've been hoping for ages for them to improve on the foiling process. Not only are the current foils too dark (a lot of time, foiling makes it harder to see the details of card art, case in point: judge demonic tutor), it also contributes to a bunch of DQs. It's ridiculous for Wizards to print stuff that are meant to be played, yet could potentially DQ you.
can anyone who has seen these describe the "distinctive foil" that was stated in the product description?
They basically look the same to me as standard foils, but glossier and more reflective. They do look better, but there's nothing like the JSS foiling technique or anything like that going on.
Interesting color distribution for the actual dragons:
W: 1 U: 2 B: 5 R: 10 G: 2
Why so many black dragons? A third of all black dragons ever printed are in this set.
I think the chosen distribution for this set is kind of twisted: they promised us dragons of every color, but there are no mono-colored dragons of some colors...they are multicolored. Nothing wrong with some multi, but I would have liked to have seen at least one mono-colored dragon of each color.
I overheard a WotC employee mention that they tried to go with mostly older dragons for the set
Dragonstorm, Bladewing the Risen, Niv Mizzet, Nicol Bolas, Shivan Dragon, Dragon Whelp, Form of the Dragon, Bogardan Hellkite, Kokusho, and Two-Headed Dragon (and HOV) are all Extended legal, not counting Rith and Draco which should rotate out soon. That leaves Ebon Dragon and Thunder Dragon.
So if we don't count Nicol Bolas and Dragon Whelp because they're timeshifted into Extended....that leaves 6 "old" dragons. That means they went with mostly new ones.
They couldn't go with Alabaster Dragon, Canopy Dragon, or maybe even Cloud Dragon, just for diversity? It's not like Dragon Whelp or Ebon Dragon broke any formats, so I certainly wouldn't call them iconic....
I wish there had been a bit more variety with colors, like alabaster dragon or exalted dragon which have always been two of my favs. Oh well.
I'm hoping they do more of these, I can't wait for Angels!! Perhaps someday after they've printed more they'd be able to do Demons too.

Shade, if you'll fufill a request.. PLEASE SCAN THE HISTORY. it's far to blurry to read, and the set's overall disappointing, so i'm not going to be picking on up... I really dont care for the overlord, it looks silly, and it just screams garbage without d-storm. but i'm still intrested in the Set, I'd love to see why they picked what they did, so please.. a scan would be MOST appreciated

I really think the Overlord is a GIANT disappointment. like was said, this goes into the deep Timmy zone and will never be seen in competitive decks. And Firebreathing is pretty standard, but on something that big, its pretty dumb. its like giving something that big Deathtouch. The Firebreathing will never really make a difference, and 3 colors, and still costs that much.
But the Timmy side of me absolutely loves it. Odds are i will throw it in an EDH deck where deep Timmy cards can really make cool game changing cards.
I've never been as excited for a set before Alara, I'm not quite sure why, but it feels so nostalgic. Like a nod to the players that have been there since the beginning.
As for the Overlord, not to impressive, but I know a few players who will have lots of fun with it.
Well, as soon as the doors opened I went straight to the WotC booth to see what I needed to do to reserve my copy, and there were already 90 people in line in front of me.
People kept deciding to drop out, but the open spots were quickly gobbled up by others. But I ended up waiting in line for almost two hours to get the set regardless.
Thanks for the info! I figured as much. I'll have to get there early on Saturday so I can get in the front of the line as the doors open and then run an NFL combine 40 yard dash time to the Wizards booth. This will be one of the few times in life where it pays to be thin and nimble;).
