The theme tournament is optional, right? I don't like this format because it's EDH without the benefit of a general, and a lot of players who come to our release events are too new to the game to be imposing new restrictions on. If I don't have the run the event like this, there's no way I will.

O perhaps Artifacts with colored activated abilities...
And it's not a big stretch to suppose that Esper, with its emphasis on artifacts, will mean that Shards of Alara includes some artifacts with Esper-colored activations.
This is the official format for the major release event. This also only applies to the release event. At the prerelease sealed deck event there are no such rules. The reaction that i have seen locally has been mixed, the more casual players like it alot more than the more serious players. The casual players are also liking the prospect of getting two planewalkers for going to each event.
sooooo stupid. hoping my local place says to hell with it and does whatever they want.
This isn's really that big of a change, as long as you don't want a 4 or 5 colour sealed deck you should be fine, if you build a u/g deck thats in the bant shard if you build a w/b deck thats epser, and so on.

I think the point being made is not 4-5 colors, rather that if you want to play u/w then you wont be able to splash red and things like that.
If you really dub yourself a good player, you will not mind the challenges presented by this format. Do I agree with everything Wizards has done, especially since Hasbro bought them out? No. Will that stop me from playing Magic? Not yet. This set is really intriguing. I did not like Lorwyn, because of the stupid fae/merfolk/blue being broken just like every other set, I am looking forward to a set that hopefully nerfs that a little. I won't hold my breath.
Its a shame that if i get some blue counterspells, some red removal, and some green bombs... those blue cuonterspells go to waste... or the green creatures go to waste or the red removal... (thats just my favorite trinity RUG)
Clearly the best are Jund and Naya for this. It sucks to not be able to play removal and mana fixing in a 3 colour deck.

This should be interesting. I hope it fails miserably, but with all of these changes, it will be a real HUGE hit or miss for the set. For magic's sake, i hope Hasbro know what their doing.
I will wager that every shard will have its own form of removal. White has always had some of the best removal, Oblivion Ring. Blue likes to keep stuff tapped, Dehydration. Green has Lignify, which is not the best, I admit. There may even be removal at common/colorless, Moonglove Extract.
Mmm I foresee trouble with deck validations... but most of all, ruling.
What happens when you "mistakenly" put spells or land of the wrong colors:
1. Lose the match?
2. Remove the spells and land from your deck?
3. Simply can't play neither the spells nor the lands?
I sure hope it's not #2 since it would mean you could "optimize" your deck by putting off-color cards and then benefits from having a reduced deck size in game #2 and 3.

You probably cannot play the spells and can only use the lands as colorless mana. The land thing was said somewhere earlier in this thread, I think by the OP.

Hotness! I love alternate tournaments and rules! This helps to enforce the 'fun' aspect of magic rather than the cliché of 'this is how it's always done!' Changes that make people upset and whine terrific in my book - it's good to shake things up a bit to keep it fresh and interesting. GOod job Wizards!
While everyone cries how "stupid" it is, I like it a lot actually. It forces to make you think (albeit bad for new players) and adds some suspense to what you pull.
agreed, i think the only reason people are really complaining about this is the competative crowd is afraid to have to change thier way of thinking to accomidate for new rules.
MARO always says restrictions breed creativity. If this was a rule that had been in the game from day 1 players would just build around it....
this rule is here to stay so just friggin deal with it and get creative
I haven't been to a pre-release in ages, and I've been hoping to make it to the Shards one in my area. This seems like a moderately interesting twist on sealed deck play, and should be interesting to play.
Is anybody else getting bored by the constant focus on color pairs and color groups in every single freaking set? Ravnica had it. Time Spiral didn't, but it came right back with Lorwyn, because most creature types had two creatures, and it continued into Shadowmoor with the hybrid cards, and now they're doing it yet again. When will they move on and explore some other element of the game? It's really frustrating to see the same territory combed through over and over and over again in immediate succession, even if I have actually enjoyed each iteration. I'm ready for something fresher than "what happens if we pair X color with Y color?"

This is completely wrong.
The rules specifically say you can not have cards with mana symbols in their cost not in your shard.
You would recieve a match loss for an illegal decklist, and be forced to change your deck for the next match, lest you recieve another match loss, and most likely a few other warning for not listening to the judge, probably resulting in a kick from the tournament all together.
"If I do go to heaven, I'll smack god across the face and tell him to get me a grilled-cheeses sandwhich and then say 'Yea what now god!? Say some'in! I dare you!' "
I don't hate this just because it's "different"... it's because it's "limiting". They are taking away options in deck construction. Now I can't play W/U and splash Red removal. I can't play G/U and splash Red or Black removal. It also means that I can't sideboard in a different color to throw off my opponent/find a better matchup.
Of course, how important these things are to me depends on the quality of common mana-fixing, and if you are encouraging three color decks, there has to be good common mana-fixing available. But in a smaller set, you can't exactly put as many fixers as say... Ravnica block. What does it mean though if we get a cycle like...
Bant Signet -
Artifact
:2mana:, : Add GWU to your mana pool.
If you print cards like that, then they're only able to reach their maximum potential in one out of five decks. In any other block, a card like that would be used to help splash off color spells, but now it doesn't work quite so well, unless there is a temendous multi-color component in this set, as here, you're stuck with a lot of basically colorless mana for little to no real fixing ability.
