NYA WOC 95991A-D Magic: The Gathering 15th Anniversary Starter Game Display (5) $49.95
NYA WOC 95991A-S Magic: The Gathering 15th Anniversary Starter Game $9.99
By CE, you mean Collector's Edition, which was essentially an unplayable reprint of a Core Set? I don't think so.
Besides, check the price: ten bucks. You're not going to get a set for ten bucks, nor is a booster going to cost that much. And check the name: "starter game".
I'd say it sounds more like a Battle Royale or Beatdown type thing.
The last introductory set was Starter 2000. Like other Starter level products, the set contained bare vanilla creatures, simple sorceries, and basic lands. Starter 2000 was only released in a series of theme decks. Each theme deck shipped with a CD-ROM that gave new players step by step instruction to learn the game of Magic, using the cards that they unpacked as a guide.
this is totally going to be a gold bordered edition of the trix deck... Just to prove that women magic players do exist.
exCUSE me?
Note that A. I am a female Magic player and B. I have never, ever, ever played Trix.
On topic, though, my guess is that this will probably remind me very strongly of the Portal stuff...though hopefully with better wording.. Mystic Denial FTL.
And yes, no incantatrix for you. Or anyone. That class makes puppies cry. Mostly because they are the former Big Bads who have been Baleful Polymorphed into said puppies. By you. Because you're an incantatrix.

I suppose it's true. Though the logistics implied in a human/Great Wyrm Prismatic Dragon pairing makes me shudder.
...Something tells me that even should all arcane casters in the world unite, that the Grease spell would NOT be sufficient.

Of course you wouldn't play Trix, it contains blue. And you probably wouldn't want to be caught dead (or undead) playing blue.:p
I'm holding out some hope for some decent portal/Starter Reprints. Grim Tutor is nice and simple, Imperial seal lol. Most likely however it isn't going to have much for established players and be totally marketed towards first time players.
If you read this site, by definition, you are not the market for this product. It is for new players.
Remember, this is the year of Acquisition, where WotC is going to put substantially more resources toward adding new players to the game.
It's actually really funny that everyone is saying "What's in it for me?" As if every Magic product has to please you...try to think about the health of the game, instead of just your interests.
If you think this product is for you, you'll be disappointed with it. You'll wonder why it was printed, and make crazy statements like "We lost organized play for this?!" So just forget about it right now, if you're that sort of person.
I think it's pretty clear this will be another tuned-down Core Set pre-made series of decks to teach new players. It will be the latest attempt at Acquisition.
Bitsy: for future reference, it was a combo deck involving Donate and Illusions of Grandeur. Basically, you play Illusions, Donate it to your opponent, and let them die because they can't keep paying upkeep on it- or simply bounce it.
Ewwww.
If they were going to do gold-bordered decks of any sort, how about some easy-to-understand ones like Goblins or Burn?
And yes, no incantatrix for you. Or anyone. That class makes puppies cry. Mostly because they are the former Big Bads who have been Baleful Polymorphed into said puppies. By you. Because you're an incantatrix.

Unless this box set comes with a metric ton of well-thought-out advertising, I don't see how it will be any more influential at getting new players than the 10th Edition starters which were essentially a "How-To-Play" box.
These kinds of things need to be marketed properly. I think the Elves vs. Goblins box had a lot of potential to be this kind of tool but WotC marketed it all wrong. Everyone who knows anything about um... well anything knows about Elves and Goblins and it could have been a great way to bring new players into the fold.
Wizards needs something to get new players to cross the threshold into playing Magic. Marketing something familiar to them, like the eternal struggles between Elves and Goblins, would be a good idea.
It isn't about how good the game is. Its about marketing. Sure, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon and VS are all good card games (no arguments please), but the marketing behind them is phenomenal because they have the support of other media outlets that Magic doesn't have. I'm not suggesting a M:tG children's cartoon. All I'm saying is that WotC needs to get their act in check when it comes to marketing M:tG to potential new players.

All those games also have demo teams. Demo teams go to card shops and malls and teach people to play the game. They give people basic product to get them started too. I've never heard of Magic having any similar OP program.

There just hasn't been any initiative in the past few years by WoTC to bring new players into the game. Its sort of a given that current players will teach some people how to play. But why hasn't WoTC tried to get people outside the TCG community into Magic? I'd heard of Magic as a young teen but didn't see any cards until I was 20 and an avid Yu-Gi-Oh player. If I'd never played another TCG I probably would never have played Magic because I'd have never gone to a card shop. The Adult Swim ads are token attempts at marketing outside their market. Magic's "target" demographic is generally asleep at midnight on weekdays. I don't understand why there are no Magic ads during Toonami or Teen Nick(its really for tweens but calling it Teen Nick is a great marketing strategy) because the target demographic definitely watch those blocks of television. Also...there's a real lack of Magic merchandise outside of Magic events. If you dressed a 13 year old Magic player in a t-shirt with Demigod of Revenge on it I'm pretty sure his friends would find the shirt cool and want to know more about the guy on the shirt. WoTC's "year of acquisition" just seems like an attempt to get something for nothing. So we teach people to play but in the US and many other countries there's no Gateway league for newer players to cut their teeth into and no JSS/MSS to hype to skeptical parents.

Tried shirts. They didn't really work. Tried backpacks - they didn't really work. The solution is not Merchandising, much as I dislike disagreeing with Yogurt

Aw, c'mon. "M:TG the Flamethrower", the kids love this one. That's the kind of stuff that would get people to play! Seriously though, I agree that this will most likely be another Starter game with stars such as Goblin Hero. Nothing anyone here will be interested in. I do think Wizards should consider jumpstarting new players w/ some free stuff as mentioned above. Give them something to mess with before asking them to throw in a ton of cash.
This will probably be another lame set with a couple of illegal (read: less than 60 cards) pre-made decks using cards from 10th Edition, a new expansion symbol, and a foil promo card or two.
Magic: The Gathering 15th Anniversary Starter Game Wizards of the Coast Offering an ideal entry point, the Magic: the Gathering 15th Anniversary Starter Game combines Core Set booster packs with a quick-start rules insert to create a complete gaming experience for new players. Each 2-player starter comes complete with two boosters, a 20-card land pack, a Learn to Play insert, and a rare, foil Khamal Pit Fighter card exclusive to this set. Offered in 5-count displays.

This seems like there is very little profit to be gained unless there is something spectacular in the Starter Game that everyone is going to want.

a playset of Birds of Paradise, Wrath of God and Pithing Needle please!
It might just be another 'Teach someone to play magic' type thing, they have been pushing that alot on MTG.com.
Yes i am the same guy who trades/sells on MOTL AND Wizards of the Coast and i trade on POJO.

What? I'm a female Magic player and I've never heard of this Trix deck. So it probably sucks.

Nowadays, though, new players learn from other players. There's no formalized system.
