I just love the design of this card! Of course, it doesn't hurt that it's a powerful card. This is the first card I'm seriously interested in for this set.
Man, Wall of Roots, Tarmogoyf, Birds of Paradise and this guy. Turn 1 BoP, turn 2 Doran, turn 3 attack for 6.
Please stop saying that this card is good with Wall of Roots in Standard. Last I checked, Rolling Stones wasn't in 10th Edition, and Wall of Roots (like many other walls), has Defender, which means it can not attack!
Aside from that, this guy is nuts!
GWB = 5/5 attacker, and a really hard to kill body. Does anyone see a down side to this card aside from a very manageable mana cost? Plus, playing GWB puts in the same colors as Gaddock Teeg, Saffi Eriksdotter, a ton of Black removal, and oh yes, Tarmogoyf. That's a ton of broken beats to put into one deck.
Joiner actually sort of slows him...but Fertile Ground is back too...;). okay..so Joiner and Fertile do the same thing for the same cost..lol) It all makes sense now...all this mana fixing.
G/W/B..here I come. I love this card...not just because he's a 5/5 for 3...not just because he's so broken in half (as in..tear up this piece of cardboard broken)...but because the ability is so completely and totally novel...and has added bonuses (like hosing down red and black with a firehose (take that Braingorgers!!), way worse than blue ever did...)..and just makes my little Johnny soul squeel with pure awe and delight.

Man, BGW is going to be an amazing archtype...

How about an Extended deck with this guy and Meekstone and Ensnaring Bridge? That could be a lot of fun... "I can attack and kill you, but none of your guys can untap or attack."
Oh man, this guy is totally tech against Intrepid Hero!
This is an incredibly well designed card. The ability has never been seen before, but it's very easy to understand and work with. This guy could definitely be an anchor if PT Junk makes a comeback.
And it may not make Wall of Roots be able to attack...but it certainly makes your opponent think 8 or 10 times before attacking with the house when instead of not having to worry about any of his creatures dying, he has to worry about having one of them eat five instead of 0.
Do you see this as a major card in Competitive Standard?
It seems to me that limited is going to be insane, basically whoever gets the craziest cards win?
BWG Storyteller aggro is suddenly seeming like a fun little idea...
Storyteller for card advantage, Teeg to hold back the tide of Wraths, Doran to beat face.... we need some more good treefolk (and let's not even mention using Timber Protector to save Doran that's just obscene).
Hell, even that little 1/3 treefolk is insanely powerful with this guy out (turn 1 drop a bird, turn 2 drop a swamp then the 1/3, turn 3 play a forest and drop this guy, swing with the lil dude for 7)
EDIT: Virus, you're a genius. Run 3 of these bad boys maindeck, sideboard one (same for Teeg) and then run Glittering Wish...
think of GWB aggro... We now have two spoiled creatures from lorwyn and tarmogoyf that are very powerful. (in standard). Teeg, Doran, and Goyf are all huge threats with a big stamp of [KILL ME] on their foreheads.
Even assuming you can't power out doran turn 2, a normal draw could go:
Turn 1: CIPT land (don't even have to reveal anything)
Turn 2: Land, Teeg
Turn 3: Land, Doran
Turn 4: Land, Goyf + some low cost tribal instant/sorcery to pump the goyf
okay thats pretty intimidating... but how about this...:
Turn 1: Land, Birds
Turn 2: Land, Doran
Turn 3: Land, GOYF AND TEEG?!! i mean... wow...
theres 3 must-kill creatures for you opponent in play on turn 3..!!
To heck with that...just go straight up aggro and forget about drawing cards (oh wait..what's that..if you had to, green can draw cards now...isn't that right Mr. Harmonize?) I see this mad monster and Mr. Teeg..oh..and Sr. Wildspeaker doesn't seem too bad either...Turn 5 Alpha strike with a team of mad tramplers FTW? Okay then..! (Nothing will ever, ever make me smile wider than watching my opponent cry when he loses to some Trampling Birds and Ornithopters...;) )
Cheers,
Austin
Edit: And unfortunately for the vast majority of removal...handling a BLACK creature with 5 toughness will be damn near impossible that early...;). (And..what's that...what are those whispers from the back row about Death Rattle? Oh..he's green too...black cries when it sees this monster...)
From the hints MaRo was giving before Lorwyn dropped, I knew this was going to be the "elegant" block. But this takes the cake. As Low said, "What a beautiful line of text."
The best part is how much flavor is being captured in these elegant mechanics, without them being at all complicated. Teeg -> Kithkin -> small and united -> no big spells. Doran -> Treefolk -> big butts -> toughness as power.

Haha, why not run 4 MD and 4 SB?
(In case you didn't notice, I meant that, if you are playing GWB, you are a lucky man because you are in the colors of a great utility card that can bring you answers...)

Well, what to say? Likely not much that hasn't been said. First, let's start with the obvious - to most intents and purposes (except giant-flinging, arena effects or Pandemonium), this is a 5/5 for 3. This alone puts it on a par with hyperefficient vanillas like Watchwolf for deck space (and, hey, it fits in the same decks).
Going through the less obvious benefits in descending order:
1. Treefolk are purported to be low-P, high-T, as most are now. So this is a very good fit, effectively giving them a power boost with little chance of a power penalty when playing full Treefolk.
2. He's 3 mana. Three coloured mana for sure, but given what we know of Treefolk and their casting costs, this makes him a straight pick simply for giving you an early-game play. If that Treefolk land is real (and if it is it's broken enough without making 3/3 tokens), with this the Treefolk may indeed be competitive enough to justify Wizards' previewers' fixation with them.
3. He is white. Yes, he's also green and black, but in terms of the decks he plays with and the nature of his effect, he's a white card through and through. White is full of creatures with low-P and high-T which might become attractive as sidekicks to this fellow, cards that go very nicely in your average green-white control deck.
4. He's white. Yes, we've done that, but in a different way - Doran is a built-in Meekstone against a lot of aggro cards (Groundbreaker, you say? And what was that I heard muttered about a 10/2? Surely you mean a 2/2?). At worst he'll usually do nothing against enemy creatures; it's unlikely many critters your opponent will play outside a mirror match will have higher T than P. Simultaneously giving you punch and denting an opponent's attack is a pretty good trick for three; this fellow definitely belongs firmly in control rather than aggro despite the superficially aggressive nature of his ability.
5. He's a treefolk. Two turns after he hits, he's an indestructible (6)/6 in all likelihood.
6. He's black. No Terror for this fellow. Actually, this should probably be higher-ranking.
The only downside I see is how specific he is; three colour, and he requires play with creatures that at most have P=T. This alone may kick him out of decks heavy on black creatures and bars you from some of green's more aggressive options (though Troll Ascetic is still very worthy reduced to a 2/2). But at the same time he may be flexible enough to have utility beyond strict GW control in an appropriate deck. Definitely a constructed card, merely for being an efficient unTerrorable creature in green/white, very likely the sort of card you can build a tournament-winning deck around. Wonder if it's a coincidence that two of the three truly strong cards we've seen in official previews are green-white (and that the other green ones are better than the black and red ones)?
Tarmogoyf costs $50, so he has to be played in your tournament deck. Otherwise everyone will laugh at you. You will be brought to the head judge's table where they will publicly humiliate you over the PA. You will have "LOL...WTF!" stamped on your DCI card in big red letters at the door on your way out.
White is the one color for equality. So how do you get advantage when you're unwilling to give yourself a leg up? You find a way to turn equality into a weapon. Make it active and offensive. Wrath of God answers this call. Evening the playing field is quite aggressive when you're the one behind. Or you're the one that knew such an event was coming and planned ahead. Wrath of God gives the most defensive color some teeth. - MaRo http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/daily/mr164
Time to bring the old Lightning Axe + Dark Withering madness deck into Standard.....
I think it's quite possible that Lightning Axe, possibly even the madness deck archetype, will become playable due to this card (if they put any good RB madness stuff in Lorwyn).
If not, then COMBAT PHASE FTW TAKE THAT CONTROL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, is there anyone else on the forums going to Rice University in Houston? We could ALWAYS use more people in our Magic games. PM me if you want to play sometime
Man, Wall of Roots, Tarmogoyf, Birds of Paradise and this guy. Turn 1 BoP, turn 2 Doran, turn 3 attack for 6.
I see Joiner Adept being used to facilitate him.
Drop the plains/swamp on Turn 2 along with Doran, swing for 6 with the Thopters
Swing for 15 with Thopters, Bird and Doran on turn 3 with that Giant Growth you just drew and it's GG.... :-):o
