I just got a copy of Inquest #149 and it has a small spread on Lorwyn. There's not a lot of new info, but here is what I was able to glean.
First there is a general blurb that describes the Lorwyn world with insights from Magic Art Director Jeremy Jarvis. Mentions Kithkin knights mounted on "Springjacks" standing against genocidal elvish "tracking teams". Race of manipulative faeries known as Fae. Boggarts (from Mistmeadow Skulk that will "go to any length to hoard the Kithkin's favorite possessions. "Jarvis stops just short of calling Lorwyn a tribal block..." This question is also asked: "What does kithkin magic center on? From where does a Boggart shaman draw his/her power?" They then mention Bound in Silence as a possible example of a tribal answer. If anything, it seems to point to the possibility of the tribal type being used rather than a creature block theme.
There is also a second section that highlights 3 creature types in Lorwyn. Elves, Merrow and Flamekin. It shows the previously seen flamekin picture along with the elf pic from the "elvish Predators" theme deck. There is also a new Merfolk/Merrow pic.
Elves: "Those judged most beautiful by the Admirer's Council are called 'Perfects' and are afforded every Privilege". Lorwyn elves are not just green, but green and black. The mounted elf is also identified as "Nath", a specific character... a dark huntsman of some repute.
Merrow: mentions that the Fae and the Merrow could be "split" color wise, as the elves are...no specific info though. Lorwyn has no oceans...just an elaborate network of hubs, channels that connect rivers, cisterns, etc. This creates a worldwide trading network that the Merrow use. They are mostly the merchants and diplomats of Lorwyn.
Flamekin: Elemental beings of fire and mutable stone with ornamented bodies. Passionate. "One such Flamekin driven by her passions is Ashling 'a traveler driven by a strong spiritual pull she feels to a greater force she seeks in the world of Lorwyn".
They then mention Bound in Silence as a possible example of a tribal answer. If anything, it seems to point to the possibility of the tribal type being used rather than a creature block theme.
This is Inquest making its own commentary, correct?
I think that needs to be clarified.
Magazines (*cough*Lotus Noir*cough*) are not to be trusted with their own speculative comments.
When they aren't speculating, wonderful.
I guess the precon colors would be the colors of each of the races in the set? (Flame-kin aside I guess)

This sounds pretty cool actually. A very unique setting.
Nice to see elves as mildly evil as they often are in myth.
Aye, elves have been portrayed as "good" for far too long in the magic the gathering environment...barring perhaps Llanowar Dead and Elves of the Deep Shadow.
But still, we need some EVIL elves.

No oceans? Does this mean blue may be "gimped" a bit in Lowryn?
Not a bit.
Ravnica didn't 'gimp' any colors, and it was hardly the 'usual' landscape.
It is just a new way to take on the environment. (And a way to make Merfolk 'work')

If the Fae and Merrow are split, I'm guessing the Fae are W/U (flying weenies are right up White's ally) and the Merrow are U/B (seems logical, especially with the 'lilypad' Swamps). The Merrow network sounds kinda like the thing the Cephalids had in the novels.
Wish I knew what Springjacks were, but for Kithkin knights. Green bad guys are long overdue as well.
We may have the first legend names with Ashling and Nath. Something to look for when the Orb is up...

yes, but if it's only just to make the flavor work, it will be a little sad. Wizards did a good job portraying a water enviroment in Ravnica, hopefully they can make this "river world" work.

Im not entirely sure they need to do so to make Merfolk work.
If you read the blurb on Ambassador Laquatus (sp?) in the 10th book, it says he can change to being Legged.
Also the fact that they are calling them Merrow this time around is pretty good, since Merrow can also become Legged at will.
If anyone knows why G0-DRAW was banned I would love it if they would PM me. That guy was pure entertainment 100% of the time. Plus he never publicly responded to his Contraptions "Proof" that never panned out.
If the Fae and Merrow are split, I'm guessing the Fae are W/U (flying weenies are right up White's ally) and the Merrow are U/B (seems logical, especially with the 'lilypad' Swamps).
I personally don't think that you have the colours quite right.
While W/U might make sense at first glance for a creature type named Fae, I think G/U might be more appropriate, as Fey ,ie) Dryad Sophisticate, creatures have traditionally been in Green's section of the colour pie.
Secondly, U/B doesn't quite seem right for this description of the Merrow. If they're THE traders of Lorwyn, then why would they be black? Black is selfish, and no one would trade with a group so selfish that actually is pretty limited as far as trade routes go, they would simply trade overland. They sound more organized, so I'm gonna call it U/W. I don't care if they need to use a Neurok Hoversail to fly. That's the flavor of the colours.
On another note, I still think it's too early to call Tribal block. I mean, if we were calling Ravnica on it's flavor alone, it should have been the Wall tribal block. How many walls were there in Ravnica?

"I hope they can see this because I'm doing it as hard as I can."
Good stuff if it's legit. Evil elves will be pretty good! And I can see Lorwyn not having oceans. Merrow cities are probably in lakes. Sounds like a winner so far.

Here is your clarification:
After the bit about Boggart shamans drawing thier power.... "Could more tribal spells like Future Sight's Bound in Silence be the answer? If so, expect something completely different from Onslaught, which explored iconic races in each color. The colors of Lorwyn will hold to their traditional values, but 'the real question is where do the races we know and love sit on this chart of Magic's values'?".
The above is speculation by Inquest. The stuff in italics seems to be Jarvis dropping hints. Inquest promises answers next issue, but who knows if they have the inside track. From everything I've read so far, I'm leaning toward Tribal as a type perhaps showing up in Lorwyn as a type of well that magic users draw thier power from. Perhaps instead of "creature type matters" we may see "tribal as a subtype matters". In any case, I highly doubt it will be the major theme of the block if it does show up. This article seems to put ANOTHER nail in the Onslaught II tribal camp coffin.

Brass Man does not untap as normal; you must pay 1during your upkeep phase to untap it.
If the Fae and Merrow are split, I'm guessing the Fae are W/U (flying weenies are right up White's ally) and the Merrow are U/B (seems logical, especially with the 'lilypad' Swamps).
The Fae are apparently malevolent, or at least mischievous, so I'm gonna go with their race being the U/B bleed. There's already been speculation that the merrow are going to be more helpful and integrated, whereas merpeople are usually secretive and stuck-up. Plus, the Merrow precon is U/W.
I don't see them printing a race that straddles each friendly color-combo, but it is starting to look like there's going to be more than just the elves being split between two colors.
I don't see how Merfolk not having access to large chunks of water has anything to do with the power level of blue in the set. For all we know the tribe of Kickass Demon Firespitters From Hell are the weakest group.
Flamekin: Elemental beings of fire and mutable stone with ornamented bodies. Passionate. "One such Flamekin driven by her passions is Ashling 'a traveler driven by a strong spiritual pull she feels to a greater force she seeks in the world of Lorwyn".
This is 99% the elemental woman from the cover of Morningtide.
Cool info, especially for us flavor-lovers.

If the colors are split, Elves are G/B, Merrow are U/W or just U, Kithkin are just White, Boggarts B/r or just B, and Flamekin are R/b R/w or just R.
Fae sounds U/G or G/R to me.
This sounds like a interesting block after all...
