Well, I could whine about how much it sucks that black players aren't getting Persecute or Arena back, but it seems like everyone else already took care of that for me. Although black players are getting Distress and Graveborn Muse, which could be used as an Arena in a Zombie-less deck. As for the entire core set, it just seems lame. I know all the cards aren't spoiled yet, but Wizards better have some aces up their sleeves to make this important of a core set (10th edition!!) be remembered.
That's frigin' stupid... I'm such a huge fan of Persecute and Phyrexian Arena. They're both powerful black cards that are staples if I can remember staples.
Even now, Persecute is one of blacks powerful cards... I know that Lorwyn is supposed to be about mono-colored themes and all (especially bringing powerful green back) but it's not worth nuking persecute.
I just can't see why.

I for one am so excited that Persecute is leaving. I play mono green, and I don't know how many times I've been playing against a black/x control deck, gotten the god draw, but still lost because of their third turn persecute.
I'm so glad it's gone.
Well, that's biased. I believe it's an important weapon for Black, and one of the most powerful cards ever printed... but the lack of it in standard will be striking. Better find a replacement, or black control and aggrocontrol will die out.

Its kind of annoying to sit here and listen to everyone complain about phyrexian arena and persecute not being reprinted. Personally, Ive won tons of games solely on the back of persecute, and phyrexian arena is a black staple, as well as an amazing card. But, it seems that everyone is overlooking the fact that just recently, cards like Extirpate, Korlash, Heir to Blackblade and especially, Damnation have been printed. On top of that, Wizards is pushing towards more MC decks, or MC deck with a small splash of another color. If Persecute were to be reprinted, it would probably be a little overpowered. As far as Phyrexian Arena, Im not really sure, but by the looks of it, Wizards is printing alot of good Zombie creatures, along with Graveborn Muse, so possibly they want black to have aggro decks that can compete. A deck with Undead Warchief, Skirk Ridge Exhumer, Korlash, Heir to Blackblade, Twisted Abominationand Graveborn Muse, with good cards to support it like Tendrils of Corruption, could be pretty competitive. Oh yeah, I forgot Bad Moon

So true, but would they bother to make a split (or more) colour version?
Split-cute (rare)
2BB
Target opp. reveals hand. choose 2 different colors. Opp. then chooses and discards 2 cards of the first color, then 2 of the second color.

I'm really glad you don't work for R&D.
Perhaps Persecute being out opens space for stuff like Unmask, which has always been great, or stuff like Nantuko Shade, to make Black decks other than control see play again. I'm all for it.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck *********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like to to occur and validate you.

Even though I do love Presecute, I think it is a little too powerful in Standard. I ran mono black discard at regionals, and lost to Solar Flare solely based off them Persecuting me every game. What really angers me is the loss of Phyrexian Arena. It was the first Spike card I discovered as a new player. When I was new, I thought anything that lowered my life was bad, but then I realized that trading 1 life for an extra card draw was the nuts. This is something I believe every new player should learn. What better way than in a core set. Also, it being an enchantment means that mono black decks cant get rid of their own arena, so it encourages good playing ethics, as opposed to Graveborn Muse. Its not like we have Necropotence-Nevinyrral's Disk in Standard to abuse.
Basically you use the Life from the Loam engine to keep your hand full so you can discard for the Solitary Confinement upkeep cost, and then you use your lands in hand to shock your opponent to death with Seismic Assault.
It kinda dominated extended (for about a month) back when Ravnica first became legal... same sorta time Dredge-a-tog and similar decks started showing up.
As much as I'm going to enjoy not having to worry about getting color-screwed all the time with more mono-colored decks running around, doesn't it seem like it would be a bit boring with only MBC, Red Deck Wins, MGA, and some form of mono-blue in the metagame?
I mean sure, two-color decks are still pretty easily viable, but I'm not entirely sure of the whole appeal of a push towards monocolor.
Well all I heard there was bad news. No persecute! it would have been even better due to Ravnica leaving. more mono/two color decks would be played, instead of this 3 color crap (I guess I can't complain, i play Project X, which is 3 color.). B

NO, no, no... it took a 180. If it had done a 360 it would have gone completely around and ended up back where it started!
(I knew a use for seeing that movie would present itself... :D)

Everyone has been talking about it now that Seismic Assault has been revealed, but what exactly is Cal?
