2 booster packs, newbie guide and a bunch of lands? more or less around $10-12 (philippines)
the Starter Packs only contain these things?
if I am not mistaken, the previous Starter Packs (not sure if 8th or 9th) contained a foil Serra Angel.
what happen to this stuff?
yuh, pretty steep price for 2 boosters and 20 lands. gotta be something else there to tempt me to buy. - mtgo equivalent cards maybe? like in the 9th starters?
I don't quite get it. The two starter pack said to have two ramdom starter decks. How random will they be? Or does it mean that each one will have two different decks for a total of 10 "random decks" or maybe there will be five "random decks" that will alternate on those packs or... I cant figure out.
I think the starter pack still contains a pair of decks: You can't play the game with just two boosters. I do think it's nice the boosters are actaully random, instead of the rigged boosters with 9th.
Edit: The fact there is a black box is a good sign, I think. The 8th and 9th starter boxes ignored black, trying to whitewash it for the kiddies. Similarly, the wording suggests that the starter kit is for experience players to grab new players, as opposed tot he starters of old, which assumed neither play knew what was going on.
10th seems like a big push to get more people to play the game. Maybe Wizards thought their fanbase was dwindling or something, so they've decided to push this beginner's theme for 10th in efforts to get a lot more people to join. That makes me wonder if Lorwyn will be geared more towards beginners than other sets. I know it's still Expert level, but we'll see.
I think it's more that they figure they might as well try to sell core product to vets too. Previous cores I've only bought a handful of packs from, if any at all. With black borders and some more interesting mechanics, I intend to get a booster box at least o' 10th.
I doubt they would dumb down any expert level expansion. I just think that the gaming vernacular has become strong enough they can smarten up core. They probably couldn't have done that even just 5 years ago.
This is great business planning right here, folks.
Rumor mongering is something that usually develops once you're already into the hobby; generally you don't care about a game's future unless you're already playing it.
The starter games are obviously targeted at players who have never played before - so why incentivize them like this? I know that I'd never buy a $20ish product just to get an advanced look at basic lands.

Is it possible that there's something to this that we don't expect? Afterall, snow-covered = a basic land. And the precons were worth it just to get the lands, IMO.
Note that the basic land pack contains a special treat for you, too—lands that feature a sneak peek at Lorwyn, Magic's next large expert-level set coming this October.
Also, is the $20 price for certain? Or is that in non-US currency? MD $$$ maybe?
Interesting little observation: The new art we thought was for Shivan Dragon is for Shivan Hellkite as sitting on those boxes is the old art for Shivan Dragon. Just thought i'd point it out.
where, the red box is Kammal. [edit: NM, for some reason I saw the shivan on the display box and was thinking it was the new shivan dragon art... its what I get for not buying any core set sence 6th, and none of my friends buying much or playing with shivan dragon, still its a mockup, looks like CG not even a picture of a physical mockup, so it may very well be a mistake, or the new art is only on the foil (or the old art is on the foil?)]
I am going with Lorwyn having a type of basic land all its own (like snowcovered was to Ice age block)... otherwise why would it be a secret.
(U/B) is :symbu: or :symub: and the same is true for the other 9 hybrid symbols with their two colors in for the last 2 leters of the code. ((2/B) and co are :sym2b:)
Alternatively {UB} or {2B} in [mana] tags are (U/B) or (2/B) T is :symtap: and T will give T in [mana] tags
It's secret because they want it to be a surprise when you open your starter pack land booster to find Horizon Canopyesque lands.
yes, the starter box is going to have the 5 allied Horizon Canopy lands... didn't they say basic?
I am still going with something like Snow-covered. Been expecting it sence Coldsnap.

Maybe. But in a couple months (after Lorwyn comes out), we'll have all the access we'll need to those lands anyway.
And if there's something afoot with the Lorwyn lands, we'll hear about it here anyway.
Definitely going to be the 5 basics but with wizards hyping it i'm hoping that they are going to have a design majorly hinting about the block, Urza's Saga and Mirrodin basics both come to mind.
A hint like the one they give should mean something pretty interesting. I don't think that WotC would give a hint just to tell us that we'll get Lorwyn basic lands in those packs.
i'm kinda expecting them to give us the common cycle of lands from lorwyn and not the basics. so if they did this with invasion, i would expect them to put in the cycle that included Ancient Spring
Thanks hunter seeing all that john avon art reminds me why i love basic land art now if only the sneek peaks are all john avons and they have the UNhinged land frame.
The new basic lands will introduce the new rule of 'islands come into play tapped'.
In all seriousness however, I think this will be used to showcase something new, either a permanent switch to textless basic lands, the introduction of a sixth basic land type, or the art for the new basics will reveal something important about the block (think about how sci-fi the mirrodin ones look).
I will be very sad and surprised if they do just give us boring basic lands in advance.

I am wondering if they will print some non-Swamp/Plains/Island/Forest/Mountain basic lands. I can see such being pretty highly sought after if they release them in (fairly) limited quantity 3 months before they will hit en masse.
I see people suggesting snow-covered, but what if the basics for Lorwyn weren't snow covered, but did have a different quality. They could be something like Ancient, or Sacred, or any number of things. That would definately be worth previewing the basic lands this early.
i really doubt they will be anything but regular basics. there is no point, and Lowryn is already printed, so it's no extra effort on their part to print an extra couple of sheets for this promotion. It's just another way for WOTC to add the "cool" factor in 10th, and to drive people out to the release event.
I could see Goblin Lands, however, they wouldn't print basic lands with such a big advantage (yeah, okay, they could be destroyed by Tivardar's Crusade but...), such a land probably wouldn't even produce colored mana or only for some life or something. Its just basic in the pack, imho.

Seeing the basic lands of a new block usually gives a good feeling for the sets.
While no one will go out and buy these most likely unless they are truly special will still be cool to see them.
Feel free to bid on my cards here!
Still, 500Php is... I dunno, that's precon territory. If I'm buying one, it won't be for me.

It's a common price mark and I haven't ever bought a starter game so I just figured I'd put something. Who cares about accuracy?
