19/35. no researching, just sat and read for half an hour, wide awake. I suck at design. That's why I didn't participate. Well that and I'm broke and wasn't walking to Renton.

I got 31; a quick 10-minute effort while on my break.
The 4 I missed:
Question 2:
I thought Mighty Giant should be rare because it is rather large for red and potentially ridiculous in limited because the ability does not say "cannot block this creature." I honestly still stand by this; it may not be complex (one of the main rarity criteria), but Panic Giant is certainly a crazy limited card (if he doesn't cost 9 mana) and therefore probably should be rare. This is a drawback-free ability, too, which made me think Rare.
Question 9:
I said "haste" because I just didn't think about Vigilance; obviously, vigilance isn't particularly synergistic with card drawing on a single-turn basis. If he already flew or something, this would be a different answer.
Question 16:
I said "marketing" because I have a game-purist gene in me. Of course, keywording doesn't reduce card text except on rares; this is the obvious answer which I simply overlooked.
Question 24:
I said Spirit Link; it's very cheap, and Timmy doesn't care about cheap spells. Perhaps I should have gone with the non-Rosewaterian argument that Timmy likes Gaining Life and HATES Discarding His Hand. That's simple; I thought MaRo might be more subtle with this one.
the link didnt work for me. I tried all three: Opera, I.E. 7, and Mozilla:(

26/35, and I'm pretty proud of that score. It wasn't near good enough had I been in the competition, but had I been I would definately have put some research into it. Probably would have scored lower, too.

23/35. I failed.. That was tough sometimes, but sometimes I was so sure I had it. I knew I wasn't ready to be a designer anyway.
Stupid Time Spiral. You made me get 22 wrong, and it pisses me off. I hated your colorbleeding from the beginning! I'm one of the pro-color pie designers.
Putting in the answers I submitted for the actual test, I see I got 30. Phew! In by the skin of my teeth. The ones I got wrong:
2) c. Like everyone else, I thought this should be rare because of its impact on limited.
16) d. I dithered over the answer here, and ended up picking the wrong one.
20) d. I didn't bother googling "linear mechanic".
24) e. I correctly got that Mana Clash is a Timmy card (Timmy wants to have fun), but didn't notice that Mindslicer isn't.
30) c. I considered Izzet, but their flavor of making things and throwing them away convinced me that it would fit much better with Orzhov and its "bleeder" strategy.
Only a 22 for me. Might have done better if I'd not gone for the rush job late last night. Very enjoyable test, though. Looking forward to seeing the rationales behind the answers.
27.
A little bit disappointed with myself, although i didn't give it much effort. Totally screwed up the questions about the red token generating enchantment and about the vicious hunger-like spell. And i didn't even know what linear mechanics were =( =))
Looking over the answers, I could have gotten a 26 right in all honesty, if I just re-read the questions a third or fifth time. I'm still pissed at Time Spiral for making me get 22 wrong.. stupid Darkness.

Getting the last word does not mean that you win the argument.
Yay, omg 35/35! Must have been lots of luck, cause, to me the timmy, jimmy, spike thing, i did not know anything about it, so i just associated, and it seems that i had a bit of luck there. Hard test though, i had to strugle trough, using more than half an hour to get all the answers right, without looking things up, but all the thinking payed of i guess.

Mighty thanks to Nemcon for the banner! for you!:D
21/35. I admit that I got that score from sheer ineptitude. I do actually want to be a designer one day (either that or an artist), and I actually did try hard on the test.
There should have been one more question.
36. Your score on this test is 27, but there is a thread on mtgsalvation that you want to participate in. Do you:
a. Shoot the moon and say you got 30+.
b. Blame your low score on some form of mental impairment (sleepy, drunk, hungover, runny nose, alien probe acting up).
c. Admit to the 27 but say you don't want to be a designer anyway.
d. Post something nasty implying that everyone else is lying about their scores.
So Sigma, which did you pick for number 36? I skipped that one.
Also, my alien probe WAS acting up, and it impaired my judgement (everything that is in text form reads "PURPLE" when it acts up), so don't make fun of other peoples' afflictions!
Another 29er here. More careful reading and research would've brought me to 32, but I would still have been wrong on
- The giant in the first section (I said rare)
- The keywording question (I said marketing)
- The variety of formats question (I said making more cards matter)

Quote from MD »
I am willing to bet my collection that Frozen and Solid are not on the same card. For example, Frozen Tomb and Solid Wall.
If Frozen Solid is not reprinted, you are aware that I'm quoting you in my sig for eternity?
30/35 with no references, damn I feel good about that.
Also, that damn Giant should be a Rare, I mean, that card has no precursor, and if it costs anything less than 7, would be the best limited card ever (uncommon, duh some rares will be better), basically winning the turn after it comes down...
Thanks for the link - got 29. That was pretty hard. I skimmed through really fast, but to my credit I can pass any multiple choice exam with a B or better, if I know the material or not. So getting 29 doesn't mean I'm a good designer.
I didn't agree that the "Falter" giant should be uncommon. It really didn't feel that way to me. I guess it could have been either rare or uncommon, the final factor in the decision being the cost and p/t. For example, if it was 4/2 for 2RR, rare. If it was 3/4 for 5R, uncommon.
30/35 after about 2 hrs of thinking and referencing cards with a search engine. That was tough and a fun challenge! Been reading Maro's articles from the very start - without all that background I'm sure the score would have half that at best.
26 out of 35. Partly my fault for reading "poorest" as "greatest" at one point (how I did that beats me - it was on the synergistic evasion question), but otherwise I'm proud of myself, I guess.

Thanks to R&Doom at Ye Olde Sig and Avatar Shoppe for the banner.
I missed:
#19 - completely forgetting about the creature-targetted Black spells that deal damage to gain life. I chose E, none of the above.
#24 - this one tripped a lot of people up. I choose Spirit Link. Part of Timmy's deal is that he likes big effects - Mindslicer is both a big creature and a big effect, so I ruled him out.
#34 - I chose C, but looking back, I don't know why.
"If I do go to heaven, I'll smack god across the face and tell him to get me a grilled-cheeses sandwhich and then say 'Yea what now god!? Say some'in! I dare you!' "
I got 24/35. It was probably a bit easier because I spend a bit of time in the custom card forums but I'm still less experienced than most people here.

Too bad I had no idea this contest was going on in the first place, as I'd love to be a designer, and I'd be great at it.

Hounds, furnace, and keyword were ones that I should have got had I spent more time thinking about it.
Falter Giant should be rare and buyback is definitely more orzhov than izzet.
