On second analysis alot of cards are 2 mana drop in standard that this affects. Blue's game has always been mess up tempo, play your wins later and mess with thier heads. This card does 2 of the three and allows for the 3rd to take place easier. This thing hurts zoo so bad its crazy. I like it however, I may just run a 2-3 still in a maindeck. Spell curve is hard when you need to have certain answers at different times. Decks need to be as versitile as possible and reach long and far distances to cover as much of the playing field as it can. Spell choice for U control is becomming difficult for the first time in a long time.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that it counters counterspell, mana leak, and all the other 2cc counterspells. Saving your mana like that could be instrumental in a counter war. With a cheap counter effect like this I may not feel so bad about tapping stuff during my upkeep with forecast.

Evil is boring. The universe is friendly. Life is on your side. Joy is your birthright. Cynicism is idiotic. Fear is a bad habit. Despair is lazy. In fact, all of creation wants you to succeed. Act as if the universe is a prodigious miracle created for your amusement and illumination. Assume that secret helpers are working behind the scenes to assist you in turning into the gorgeous masterpiece you were born to be. . . Life always gives you exactly what you need, exactly when you need it.
yeah, i had thought about the guildmages but looking over the 2 drops that are out there this card has great potential. i can not see a blue control deckthat doesn't run this full bore.
Sigh they should've picked 3, not 2. Maybe in older formats that's the better number, but in Type 2 3 is much better - counter all nutty removal. I think it will make people's sideboards, but I doubt main.

Mark Rosewater: "We won't print contstructed utility cards at Mythic."
Nope, you'll print format defining, absolutely necessary cards at mythic instead.
Lol, It counters Pride of the Clouds if players actually play it from thier hands. And yes the counter-counterspells thing was the first thing that crossed my mind. But counterspell wars are never good and never finish very well so a good 1cc counter-counterspell is pretty nice*.
*(considering the new izzet/boros split (izzet side) Odds also has counter-counterspell written on it)
Edit: As for removal spells, meh, control dosent really have alot of creatures to put out if you are playing U/W/R colors.

There are soo many 2cc spells that are relevant, so this is a great card. From the cards so far, Dissension is much, much more powerful than guildpact. Yay, dissension.
Glad to see that there are multiple counterspells in DIS, they were low in stock during the first two sets.

most every deck design that i see balances the power and speed in the 2 and 3 drops. i think the 2 drop is huge in that it can take out some of the most important cards out there... think about the effect on white weenie.
2 is the most powerful number they could have possibly picked for this. Every remotely competitive deck in existence runs many 2-drops, many of which are very important. While 3-drops are also important, by that time you can Mana Leak. This card allows blue control decks to take back the early game. Even late game, many decks still cast 2-drops. (Last Gasp, etc.) By definition the spell is cheaper than what it's countering. I don't know if this spell will change the game hyperdramatically - I'm not an expert on metagames and such - but I believe an expert.
Playing control against 6 different t2 decks today, 80pc of the time they dropped a 2 drop on 2nd or 3rd turn. Considering that a control deck has a huge disadvanatage going 2nd, spell snare clears that problem. Example, playing 2nd i verse a rakdos deck. They first turn drop mana pass, i drop 1 blue and pass, they play gobhobbler rats a 2/2 that i can not get rid of for quite a few turns w/o the risk of not having counterspell magic, they are able hit me at least 2 times b4 i can deal with it and have mana open for remand or mana leak. With spell snare i can stop this unecessary dmg and survive a few turns longer.
most likely i'll main deck four, and sideboard them out for game two if nessecary, but i can't think of a single deck out there that does not run solid and powerful 2drops.

I'm sure that this will see a lot of play in T2 considering that most decks in the current format are all about 2 drops and 2cc spells. Guildmages, Jitte, etc. Most decks have 2cc as the predominant cost in there decks.
So far in Legacy half of many deck were for 2 mana. hard couner may be useful there, but after "create anew good deck" competition on Source it will dramatically change.
I think this is a sideboard card - against 0wl, No-STick and osme other decks.

Someday all lands will be controlled by all players and all creatures will be equal.
@ card: we already knew this, but its still really good. If your playing blue and your not playing this you should be smacked. Name a deck that doesn't run killer 2 drops...and add to that that it helps win counter wars. This + Condemn are the power uncommons of Azorius. The gold u/w uncommon simply wont be able to live up to them.

this is so good because there are so many powerful cards with CMC 2: watchwolf, lightning helix, and umezawa's jitte just to name a few... need i say more???
Meh. If it was "2 or less" it`d be infinatly better. This card is extremly narrow and it certinly wont turn standard on its ear, like flores predicted......

Why would it be infinitly better? 50% of the time you won't be able to counter the first turn drop. Then take into consideration how many one mana cards that you would want to waste countering. I think you are really underrating this card.
i dont think this is effective enough in t2, it's a dead draw late game, but should be decent in 1.5 and extended
Why? Your opponent won't draw 2cc spells anymore?

i was about 40seconds away from typing this exact arguement... this is a counter with implications far into the game. 1CC isn't usually the nail in your coffin, but i'll be damned if a 2CC at the right time doesn't swing games.

Yep smart minds think a like. Actually its more that I'm so less pessimistic about this set than guildpact. I also love cards like force spike and this is as close as you can get in Wizard's new vision of blue.
This. Card. Is. Awesome. In the format as it stands, this is at least a sideboard card in any deck that can produce blue mana. There is no valid arguement for this not being amazing in a format that is defined primarily by two-drops. None.
Dude wtf? This card is alright but still terrible... I would rather have a mana leak any day of the week... And seriously WTF is up w/ WotC only making counterspells that are good against Control????
this and the 5cc one will pretty much allow skys to rape any Counterspell deck (perhaps its best use)....
Sure their are alot of two drops out their, but how many more 1, 3-X drops? This card is basically only better than say mana leak if u go second and your opponent drops a 2 drop, after that Mana leak 95% better.... Turn 2 STE isn't the end of the game but on turn 4 when they drop Loxodon Heirach and all u have in your hand is gay snare ur sure be wondering why the hell it's in your deck... Maybe a sideboard card, but if you can't find a better card two put in your sideboard you beck might be in trouble....
There are 250 cards in standard right now with CMC 2 (with a quick gatherer search). Tell me that's not a lot of cards. Granted, many of them aren't playable/played, but there certainly are a great number that are, as others have posted. Guildpact will surely add more. I think this will definitely be played and personally I like :symu:: Say no to Jitte.
