From a friendly source, who I hope to deal with again sometime in the future.
...(This source was) able to talk to Chippy. I tried to get some information (Art!) about the upcoming block...he was of course very shy to talk about it.
What I could get was this: He told me that he made about eight artworks for the next block and that the whole style is radically different from Ravnica. He also said that he changed his personal style - he is now working with the computer.
I know that this isn't much but I hope it is of interest for the mill, anyway. Feel free to post it if you consider it relevant.
Greetings,

Thanks to our source! I'm sure this tidbit will be of no consequence to us whenthe season gets into the full swing of things, and besides, we have Dissension and (OH SNAP!) Coldsnap to look forward to between now and then.

Thanks Hydro! im glad to see more stuff from Chippy i likes the art on faiths fetters. Radically Diffrent, dose that mean like no 2+ color cards?
Arts usually don't reflect stuff like that always.
Block design, remember?
Multicolor should stick around...I hope.
Hybrid cards are expected to stick around...

It's time to get out of the desert and into the sun.
So, what he basically said was what we should expect:
This won't be happening on an all-city plane.
That still doesn't seem radically different enough. Plenty of Ravnica cards still got away without depicting the cityscape at all.
From this commend, I'm kind of inclined to think that the next block's art emphasizes a more abstract approach, ala Time Stop, as opposed to Ravnica's art, which is more concrete.
I like Chippy, but hope that the move to computer illustration doesn't mean the background environment for 'Time Spiral' will be overly mechanized or cyberpunk. We've had quite enough of that with Mirrodin and Ravnica.
That said, the mere use of computer for illustration aid doesn't keep Todd Lockwood and Glen Angus from doing wonderful high fantasy works.
maybe the block takes place in pre-civilization times, and that's why it's called time spiral? like, we're going waaay back in time? so that means the set after this could go back even farther...

I don't care for Chippy either way, in fact I never notice his art.
The fact that the next block is totally different art-wise is something we expected, but it's good to have more confirmation on it. Personally I think Ravnica is awesome and I'm annoyed at the "one block per setting" idea of the last several years. Why not mix it up and sometimes do TWO blocks per setting? Or three? Why always one? We're not a bunch of ADHD 12 years olds... we can handle development of a setting over six sets. Oh well.
Hmmm, this is enough info to start the partial spoiler, right? RIGHT?
Well, the last time they did a double block in a row was Otaria, and that didn't turn out too well. It's not at all impossible that we will return to Ravnica in a few blocks though. I'm all for a bit of change, and the worst thing that could happen to Ravnica is that it grows stale. If we return to it later, the designers will have gotten time to refresh their minds.
And there's nothing cyberpunk about Ravnica. It's gothic, slightly slavic, but not any more technologically advanced than any other MtG set containing wacky wizards and strange artifice.
As for Chippy, I can't say his art has made much impression on me.

I happen to agree with R_E, they should make more than one block per setting, but i also agree that too much of one thing isn't good.
i'm like torn apart between this.
and about chippy... not to be a bad guy, but what cards has he illustrated?

random, useless knowledge:
if we could line up every person that lives in china, and try to reach the last one walking, we would never be able to do it, because of it's demographic growth would get bigger and bigger and we could not be able to reach the end
I find Chippy to be inconsistent. His stuff either grabs your attention with a 'WOW!" or else it is too cartoonish. If he is doing 8 pieces I expect we can look forward to another mixed bag. It will be interesting to see if the computer makes him better or worse...

Actually the setting for the "Time Spiral" set is going to be back on Dominaria just after or just before the events of Invasion (from what I remember).

Have fun.
Im glad hes back on the "current" roster.
Radically different? Does that mean no buildings at all?!:o
Thanks for the post, Hydro.
With regard to him changing styles.. perhaps I will like his art more.. if it compares to Avon.

@Kodama, the only really played cards he has done are Faith's Fetters, Nightmare Void, and I guess Spiraling Embers is a played card now with *2* Owling Mine decks in Top 8 at Pro Tour Honolulou. Other cool stuff includes Tek, Ostracize, and Order of Yawgmoth.
Okay, so looking back at that artwork, it's not all the best, but the art on Fetters is cool, as is Nightmare Void and Tek.
