My best guess right now is 37 cards per color. though 34-39 is feasible. this virtually guarantees common gold(/artfact/land). not counting the frequent cycleof common lands.
I reckon the point of Maher's card was the "each upkeep" clause that he had on his original design. They've just weakened the power level by a motherload. If they had kept it at BB or increased the cost to 2B, then I think "each upkeep" wouldn't have been that overpowering.
In terms of ranking this in relation to the other invitational cards, I'd place it slightly above Sylvan Safekeeper (which may seem good to some, but I didn't like at all).
People comparing this to Phyrexian Arena are dumb. Arena cost 3 mana to play, and Arena can't attack. Like someone said on another board I go to, the difference of the two is similar to the difference between Eternal Witness and Elven Cache. The whole point of a black aggro deck or suicide black deck is to have really cheap and efficient creatures. This card plays into it so perfectly, and I doubt Sui Black minds losing one or two life a turn to net another creature every turn.
This is a powerful card, and those who don't see it clearly aren't thinking very hard about it.
I can believe the guy who made this card. A once in a lifetime opportunity for him to create a card his way and he creates a mediocre one? R&D coulve made that and could care less about it. I feel sorry and at that same time I wanna *beep* *beep* *beep* the guy who made it. Great card, buts its no Meddling Mage

Can somebody translate that please?

Hang on, I need my gibber-to-english dictionary. Ah yes, here it is,
The card is solid as is, but they could have made it a lot better just by adding the word "may". As in, "At the beginning of your upkeep, you MAY reveal the top card of your library and put that card into your hand. You lose life equal to its
converted mana cost."
I'm impressed with the card overall. I think the art's kinda silly, but I don't mind black art that isn't grotesque and geared toward 12 year old boys who think guts and exploding brains are cool. It looks a bit dark, but also a bit sinister. The power level of the card is fairly high. Those people who are saying it sucks are probably newbies, Timmies, or both. This is an easy, splashable, second turn beater which comes with the bonus of drawing you twice as many cards as normal. Considering a deck with a fairly low curve (25% swamps, 25% 1cc, 25% 2cc, and 25% 3cc) you're taking an average 1.5 damage per turn. That's NOTHING for the advantage he provides. How much extra power do you expect on a 2/1 for :symb:? What should it cost, :symb:? You're crazy if you don't see how efficient this is. Losing life, in black aggro (or even black control) isn't the end of the world. Drawing 2 cards a turn, starting from your 3rd turn, is a huge advantage that can't be overlooked. You're drawing stuff like creature removal, more weenies, and perhaps even creature pump, and you're going to win the game with it. I'd be GLAD to cast this guy in multiples. Beating down for 4 a turn, plus drawing 3 cards... doesn't matter if you take 3 damage per turn. And of course, that 1.5 damage per turn is just an average, and doesn't take into effect any kind of library manipulation. Plus, he's a Wizard, which can have its uses in the right deck as well.
As for the set symbol, I agree that it's a guildhouse building. This set is going to be ALLLLL about the guilds, baby.

Wow. 81. That's Ridiculous. That's a lot of gold. (Or a lot of land but I'm doubting that. Or artifacts but we just had mirrodin. Or something else entirely like split cards but you get the point.)
Yeah, that's a lot of gold, but we're expecting that. We know it's the new "multicolor" block. Of course, expect them to put a spin on it, because if they just did a total rehash of Invasion, people would be very disillusioned, and would probably be driven off the game in crowds. So it'll have gold, but it'll be unique and interesting. I agree with whoever said 37 cards per colour - probably 15 commons, and then another 24 split between uncommons and rares... 12 and 10 probably. Ahhh, number crunching... isn't it fun? I think there'll be 10, possibly 15 nonbasic lands, and of course the 20 basic lands as well. I also think there'll be a decent showing of Artifacts, because we're beyond Mirrodin now, and it's safe to flood the T2 scene with new Artifacts now. Also, we're not on an Artifact "hunger strike" like we were before Mirrodin block came out, so we'll see a good number - 20, maybe 25.
The color order goes: white, blue, black, red, green, gold, artifact, land. Gold cards are numbered high in the set. Spiritmonger - 121/143, Shadowmage Infiltrator - 294/350, Anurid Brushopper - 137/143, Psychatog - 292/350, Death Grasp - 95/143, Gerrard's Verdict - 102/143, Vindicate - 126/143. Those are just a few numbers I've looked up. Since the set is going to have 306 cards, and black starts in the 70's/80's, that means that each color is going to have about 35-40 cards each. Which means that there's 121 cards left to split between land/artifacts/gold cards. Invasion had 350 cards in the set, 71 gold cards, roughly 45 cards per mono color. 22 artifacts and 32 lands. We're looking at roughly the same numbers as Invasion. Yay!! Hopefully Fact or Fiction will come back as a slightly less powerful reprint. Maybe 4 cards instead of 5.
you people are all insane, this card is alot better then arena, this card is rediculously powerful and everyone who said it was bad will look silly when its one of the biggest tourament cards out there and is selling for $10+
I guess I'm willing to concede that Dark Confidant isn't all too bad.....as it does indeed give you lands for free.....and.....evermind.....lol. I have enough faith to guss that there will be plenty of cheap critters for this guy to bring out so that we may have a better use of him.
Hmmm.....reach through mists and evermind are nice and cheap.....and cheap card draw is always happy. Maybe these will find a home for this guy?
Eesh.....I didn't notice the number. Now I can see how changing the :symb::symb: to :1mana::symb: is that much better. It's a lot easier play with gold cards floating around with only one color in the CC.

I think Dark Confidant is gonna see a lot of play. Looks like good in every format. I can easily see this guy helping you draw through lands that you don't want to draw, not to mention that Divining Top would be too slow for black aggro decks without this little guy.

I don't consider my trousers to be a land, even if they do contain an "Undiscovered Paradise."
The art looks okay. It sure as hell came out better than Voidmage Prodigy (I would say I feel sorry for Kai over that one, but then again he's made thousands of dollars playing a trading card game so it kind of evens out).
This card will definitely be played if any sort of black aggro strategy is viable when Ravinca rotates in. A bear that draws cards is very, very good.
PS. I think we'd get a lot more interesting cards if Wizards didn't make the invitaionalists create creatures. I know they want these cards to become iconic like Meddling Mage, but it would be better if they let these guys use any card type.
As for the expansion symbol - it looks like:
-a tower
-a tear
-a raindrop
but probably a tower, or spire
See the attachment!
Thats what Dark Confidant is to Arena. Its a reprint on a creature.
Think of Phyrexian Rager. Now imagine it if it cost 1 less and was a 2/1 instead.
thats what Dark Confidant is, except you get the card at your next upkeep and you can do it every turn after that as well.
this card is AMAZING for aggro black. there is no aggro black in extended or type II, but if there was it'd be an automatic four-of.

You're right, good point. I saw the dot, and I remember the dots on the Ravnica logo, but I didn't put two and two together.
Now I think this is a guild "signet" or medallion or something. A symbol of what guild you belong to, out of the 10 possible guilds in Ravnica.

BTW, even that strange creature behind the wizard looks like a 'dot'
