Wow...that picture reminds me of Star Wars...or maybe that's because I haven't slept since I saw Ep 3...anyway,when Ravnica comes out, you all build your fun multi-color decks. I'm building suicide black.

yes turning of the tide that was a nice, props on breaking the deck
I think it's a pretty good card. It's worth splashing for anyway. if black weenie makes a comeback (which all signs point to) then this will most likely be a staple of those decks. This and the reprinting of Will-o'-the-Wisp seriously points to competitive black weenie speed decks. Which I have always personally been fond of. outside of black weenie though, its doubtful it will see any competitive play.
Something occured to me. When Dark Confidant show up in Standard, Mirrodin will rotate. With Mirrodin goes Black's only 2 non-situational life gain cards in Standard (Consume Spirit and Plunge into Darkness). If they reprint Consume Spirit in 9th Edition (which I could see), then a suicide black deck will be tough to beat (I have a build already for Kami-Rav T2 but it's still my secret ).
PS. I think we'd get a lot more interesting cards if Wizards didn't make the invitaionalists create creatures.
They don't. Just take a look at the history of submissions. It's pure coincidence that all the winning ones thus far have been creatures (well, Maher's original card wasn't, but it wasn't serious anyway).
So as long as there are no other cards known which might help in this point i'm not giving black weenie a home, not in a multicolor block.
Well, black has had some pretty good weenies in the last block. Hand of Cruelty especially.

Hmm. Giving cards for life in the color of life drain is scary imo. I think this card will make a real impact, and I think something like the necropotence-decks from the old days will emerge. Even though Mirr rotates out, the Consume Spirit is a "plant" for 9th (MaRo said so in an article somewhere). So these to will be playing on the same playfield... I think the card is very good, much better than arena, coz arena has problems against green and white (disenchant style, thanx to jitte we'd get splash damage from that), but this guy would only have problems with red and black (Blue messes with everything and everyone, so it's gonna get a beating when the other colors grow up )
And as stated if you have a average CMC of 2, then this is like arena until the top shows up, then this will be draw another card, the other being a land.
Oh - and like I've said in a million other threads: Necropotence was deemed crap - not bad or subpar - it was really bad. Someone will break this card, I'm sure of it.
My not so humble oppinion this time.
Cards that draw exactly one and only one card during the upkeep are basically unbreakable. They either are pre-broken or they're simply good cards, like Arena. A comparison to necro isn't really apt, since necro could be used to draw any number of cards at the same time. That was what made it sick and wrong.
I do think this will be a decent card, and I strongly suspect there will be some kind of library manipulation in the next set that makes it even better. Even without it, this guy is great for the MBC-style decks that run tons of swamps and X-cost spells as a default.
The reason I use Necropotence as an example is not to compare the cards to it, but it (edit:maybe) has magic history's biggest difference between first impression and actual broken-ness.
I think Donate was worse than necro in terms of actual to perceived quality; while a lot of people viewed necro as bad there were enough that thought it could rock. Donate? It was one of those odd Johnny cards and not a lot else. But anyway - I think most people will look at this card and think he's okay but not immediately great like some of the last few were. He's clearly not as easy to place as Jens was, for instance. He's a lot more subject to the environment at hand. If Monoblack can work well in the format, particularly in block, he'll be a machine. If some kind of weenie horde/suiblack can work well in the format, he'll do well. If neither exist, there will likely be better options.
I think he has the potential to shine in the new extended rotation, which will have a really great set of black power cards to build around without a lot of the stupid combo crap.
Meddling Mage isn't even the most format changing Invitational Card. The first card printed, Avalanche Riders (Darwin Kastle) was very potent in Standard for Ponza and Rootwater Thief took over just about every format for awhile. Meddling Mage has just had the longest career of the bunch.
I must say Cube Drafting is Fun. Since its mostly the only drafting i do.
Attack step ok, oh wait i would like to cryptic command. im sorry its too late to do that.
You know it's funny, reading through these old evaluations at Dark Confidant. Clearly no one knew how strong this card was and clearly nearly every comment on here misevaluated this card. This should be a lesson to give some cards a chance before saying "it's horrible."

I mean you barely have to necropost to see how off people`s evaluations can be on here, look how lukewarm people were to flip Jace. Not calling people on here stupid btw, evaulating cards without playing them can be very hard. Just don`t trust what you read, that`s all I`m saying.

you people are all insane, this card is alot better then arena, this card is rediculously powerful and everyone who said it was bad will look silly when its one of the biggest tourament cards out there and is selling for $10+
What's hilarious for me in this comment is the $10+ part. The card is averaging at $40+ and shows no signs of declining value. Then again, this was before Tarmogoyf, when no Standard legal card went over the 30$ mark, at least to my knowledge.
Also, one last bit of conventional wisdom:
I can believe the guy who made this card. A once in a lifetime opportunity for him to create a card his way and he creates a mediocre one? R&D coulve made that and could care less about it. I feel sorry and at that same time I wanna *beep* *beep* *beep* the guy who made it.

In my dream, the world had suffered a terrible disaster. A black haze shut out the sun, and the darkness was alive with the moans and screams of wounded people. Suddenly, a small light glowed. A candle flickered into life, symbol of hope for millions. A single tiny candle, shining in the ugly dark. I laughed and blew it out.
