So we now know that the block following Kaladesh in set on Nicol Bolas' home plane, and on Monday Mark Rosewater reiterated in his State of Design article that "story integration" - the continuing story between the blocks - was a key highlight of 2016.
Knowing what we know now, how can that be anything but a stylised head of Bolas?
I can only assume that the story will be that the Planeswalkers discover that he is pulling the strings on Kaladesh and chase him back to his home plane for a final battle only to discover that the 5 gods of Amonkhet are on Bolas' side and that they're way in over their heads (perhaps leading to another death of a Planeswalker).

It's possible, but unlikely as he has been confirmed in the block *after* Kaladesh. (Amonkhet)

When was it stated that Amonkhet was Bolas's home plane? We only know that it is under his rule. He's a nearly all powerful evil dragon planeswalker, it would be very easy for him to take over a plane, especially one with a worship structure already in place.

Exactly. Here's a quote from Maro's article:

First, we wanted more continuity. We wanted a sense that the story was more ongoing and connected. To do that, we created a stable cast of characters (the Gatewatch) and have started interlinking the story of the blocks more closely together.
This means that the story of one block will lead in some way to the next. It does look like the split between SOI block and Kaladesh block is pretty hard, suggesting that the link between Kaladesh and Amonkhet will likely be greater.

That's true. I guess I should have written "home base" rather than "home plane".
This is neat to see. I was thinking either this set was going to be a bolas plot or phyrexian. All the artifacts, things that looked like etherium, which hearkens back to Tezzeret last seen on New Phyrexia, a vedalken judge that can see the flaws of any artifact design (vedalkens having been on New Phyrexia and seeing flaws in designs being kind of a phyrexian purifying thing), I thought it was leaning hard towards Phyrexians.

That does not mean that Bolas will be in Kaladesh, at all. Just that there will be characters carrying over between blocks (I.e. the Gatewatch and planeswalkers they interact with).

You should. Bolas's home plane is Dominaria. He ruled an empire there for quite a while (Medaka) before some upstart threw a falling star at his head.

I can totally see Bolas to pop up and wreck havoc or use the Aether Revolt in some way to gain something, maybe build his own little league of "evil" planeswalkers (or just some driven into madness).
That would at least be a great counterplay to the annoying Gatewatch , a bunch of actual cool planeswalkers to strike on them.
Let's keep in mind where we've seen Bolas lately. Shards of Alara he had an experiment to make the planes reconnect. On Zendikar he made his pawns release the Eldrazi. And, if this theory holds, he is likely interested in the invention to teleport matter, as that's been getting a lot of the focus so far.
So working on connecting planes and teleporting, with some interest in creatures that can planeswalk but aren't planeswalkers. Sounds like Bolas is planning an invasion.
I'd like to see Bolas in a set again or Phyrexians
Then you are in luck, as he has been confirmed to be in the block after Kaladesh. (Amonkhet)
yeah I think I typed this post before I saw that thread. At first I wanted to see Bolas in Kaladesh too but now I think having him in both blocks might be too much. After all I hated seeing Eldrazi two blocks in a row
It's certainly possible if they want to link the stories throughout the sets. There was a nod to Vraska in a story a while ago and I think she's the planeswalker working together with the renegades in Kaladesh's underground. And I could also imagine her working for bolas for whatever reasons.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.

Honestly, I think the Vraska connection is with Amonkhet rather than Kaladesh. It would make sense for them to start laying the groundwork for that block now, while the focus is on Kaladesh. We can be certain that at least two of the Gatewatch that won't be in focus in Kaladesh will likely show up in Amonkhet, most likely Liliana and either Gideon or Jace, with Jace being the more likely. Jace has a personal connection to Vraska, while it is likely that one of Lily's demons are on Amonkhet. Putting Vraska in Amonkhet as a pawn/minion of Bolas would make sense in that case. But I will readily admit that it is just pure speculation on my part.

yeah that was pretty much my other train of thought as well. I had to look up info on Vraska to check on her homeplane. If it said 'unknown' I would be willing to bet good money it's Amonkhet. If she appeared there, she'd be great in the first set as a pawn, with bolas as the master in the second set. Since bolas is already involved, could it be that Tezzeret is the antagonist in kaladesh?

Vraska's home plane is Ravnica, her base of operations on the other hand... She was born into the Golgari Guild and sparked after being tortured by Azorius Guards for the crime of being a Gorgon.
As for Tezz, it is possible that he is the antagonist in Kaladesh, but I doubt he will make an appearance, as that would mean that we would be getting three blue aligned planeswalkers in the block. While three planeswalkers that share a color is far from unheard of, it is unlikely (The other two being Saheeli Rai and Dovin Baan). I think that the primary antagonist(s) of Kaladesh will be Dovin and/or an as of yet unrevealed character.

fair enough, perhaps pax this weekend will tell us more. I'm still not that fond of wizards revealing Amonkhet so soon. I'm still very excited for Kaladesh, but... even though it was just one single gorgeous artwork, I was even more excited when I saw that announcement today. Maybe it's just because artifacts already had several sets, while we never had an dedicated egyptian setting. If they announced it some time when ether revolt rolled around I wouldn't be so torn between being hyped for Kaladesh or Amonkhet.

They did the same with Kaladesh, revealing it near the beginning of the spoiler season for SOI. And we've never had a setting based on India either (Tarkir was more of a Mongolia/Tibet/Western China kinda deal), and people were still hyped for the return to Innistrad.
But I am telling you, if they don't reprint Desert (or at least gives us a land with the desert subtype) in Amonkhet, then they have failed as designers. >.<
Still, I am really, really hyped for both the upcoming blocks, slightly more for Kaladesh because Dwarves (and India), and because it is closer. But I fully expect my hype for Amonkhet to reach the same levels as we come closer to its release in Spring.
The more interesting (and to me more possible) interchange is that Tezz is in Kaladesh for the fair, but is not our antagonist. He just... has some time off, or really wanted to see what cool things people made. He and Nicky B aren't involved in the plot directly, but Tezz's presence leads into Amonkhet in the same way that a sequel hook exists at the end of a movie.
I'm expecting if our antagonist isn't Baan (I don't feel he's our antagonist), it'll be a creature of Kaladesh, not a walker.
Also as to the set symbols, Kaladesh's set symbol is a gilded archway of Kaladesh, Aether Revolt's appears to be a unbloomed flower of some kind. The details at the top make me think 'lotus' which would fit in the lore and aesthetics we have for the plane.
I have doubts we'll see Tezzeret for one big reason. Phyrexians. Last I know of Tezzeret was disillusioned with Bolas and intrigued by the phyrexians. He might still be an agent of Bolas, but kind of like Sarkhan, looking for a way out. Tezzeret was trying to take over Phyrexia, and with Karn liberated, he was the last known planeswalker embedded there. This could work out two ways. Tezzeret uses the phyrexians to "purify" his biological imperfections and free him from Bolas, or He remains an organic plant in the phyrexian machine so that Bolas can wield the phyrexians at some point as pawns.
But bottom line, the next time you see Tezzeret you're going to see phyrexians.
And here is why Phyrexians are likely a no go.
Kaladesh is one of the lored planes that has always been teased, but never visited before. If Phyrexians get involved the plane is dead, whether by invasion or that phyrexian corruption. While it's possible that WotC might wreck three planes in a row, I just don't think they'll do that to a whole new setting, especially one with so much hinted history. Maybe that will be the point of invasion, to see something long fabled go down quickly thereby increasing the scariness of the phyrexian forces, but it'd be kind of.. sad and also too soon. There is a distinct possibility that the revolt is fueled by phyrexian sleepers headed by Tezz and orchestrated by Bolas through his puppet, but this would be very similar to the Eldrazi surprise invasion on Innistrad. I just don't think it's likely.
My guess..
Bolas orchestrates a revolt to distract the defenses of Kaladesh and steals something very important (Aetherevolt). This theft leads the Oath Watch back to Amonkhet to Bolas himself in the next block. There we'll finally see whatever larger machination Bolas is working towards. The second set in Amonkhet will likely have huge consequences for the mtg universe.
Seriously though, I don't think Bolas will be on Kaladesh. Assuming Jace and Gideon are not involved on Kaladesh that much (if at all), they are currently researching Vraska's activity on Ravnica. We're all but guaranteed to see them in Amonkhet, which means that the connection to Vraska somehow leads them to Bolas and the plane he is overseeing. Bolas doesn't necessarily have to tie into Kaladesh, and while the stories will be interconnected, they won't all have ties that bind. It just won't be a random jump, which is why the mentioning of Vraska on Ravnica was (most likely) an important setup for the block after Kaladesh.
Here is a theory for ya'll that ties Bolas to the two stories. In this first set, agents of Bolas hear about the machine and plot to steal it for their master. While attempting to take the device, they cause a disaster to occur when they open up a long lasting portal to the Aether. We get a Howard the Duck moment when something else (Dark Overlord of the Universe) comes through the portal. This leads us into Aether Revolt. In Aether revolt, Agents of Bolas have successfully run away with the technology leaving the gatewatch to find a way to close the portal that is spewing life that lives in the Aether onto Kaladesh. Chandra cooks the Aether creatures while somebody else closes the portal. Either in capturing one of the agents, or via a plea for help, the Gatewatch then discovers the device has wound up on Amonkhet. This draws the link between the two blocks. The Gatewatch lead by Jaceus goes there and get's their butts handed to them and Bolas keeps the device undoing the Mending. The Gatewatch with their tails tucked between their legs run to Ugin for help. Ugin has a plan after studying the remains of the Titans and at least for a little bit, joins the Gatewatch to again attempt to stop Bolas. Ugin and Bolas meet in battle and this time with the help of the Gatewatch, Ugin defeats Bolas. Jace is mortally wounded and dies because Jace has gotten annoying. Tamiyo takes his place in the Gatewatch. Then Wizards ticks us all off by bringing Jace back to life. Zombie Jace eats Chandra's brains, and him and Liliana live happily ever after.
OK, that last part about Jace is more wishful thinking than theory.
