Idea: SOI could have a few Mummies in it, one of the horror tropes that went untouched last time, in order to open the door for Mummy tribal in Standard once the Egytpian set comes out?
Mummies were considered last time for Innistrad but felt too Egyptian for a full-on supported tribe. They could just tease a few cards in the set to prepare for a new Egyptian plane.

I'm confused how WOTC could do a waterworld though. Perhaps like Earthsea, where it's a lot of small isles? But that's too similar to what Greece is like, with a host of small isles, and that's Theros territory. IDK.
I suspect that if they do make the pirate-themed setting which apparently a lot of other people want (I always thought I was in a small minority), they'll have to change up the medium a bit. Possibly a world which is a bunch of floating islands (everything is Emeria) navigated by skyships, because it's been too long since Magic had skyships, but it would also be some kind of creepy magical "sea" of unstable/dangerous energy, or what have you.
The important thing is to have an environment navigated primarily by using ships, without either making the setting as a whole feel too Blue-centric*, or causing most of the creatures to be depicted as water-breathers (which Wizards tries to keep to a minimum).
* Although I don't think a "mostly blue" setting is a huge dealbreaker, really. Innistrad, taken as a whole, clearly skews towards Black, and those "Soul Of ___________" Avatars from M15 suggest it's not a huge lore problem to project similar thinking upon other planes, as well.
I expect that for a Waterworld they may look to other island cultures, like Polynesian, to flesh things out so it doesn't feel just like Earthsea or Greece/Theros. You could easily work in some common tropes like pirates, cannibals, etc.

I hope Egyptian plane is the next one. I've been dying for that theme in MTG. I don't think making gods is necessary though. Ancient Greeks believed the Egyptian gods were their own gods in disguise. It would be neat if a planeswalker from Theros, say one of the old champions travelled to Egyptian World and started a religion there based on worship of the Theros gods that do not actually exist on Egyptian world.
Just Cause the greeks believed that doesn't mean the Egyptians do. Many people know Jesus was a jew, didn't stop the roman catholics from killing them during the Inquisition.
Also IF we do go to ancient egypt I just hope they do the mythology justice and not like Gods of Egypt. Anyone see the trailer for that train wreck? Makes the new clash of the titans look good. Seriously though, I hope Wizards actually does their research on the gods this time so we get accurate portrayal of their personalities. I am so tired of everyone thinking the God of Death is the bad guy. Seriously the god of death in Egypt is considered to be also known as the Lord of Love.
WtoC dont have to portray the mythos as you know it. They use real world mythos as a source of inspiration and reference but they have no intentions of teplicating it.
Actually I think Theros is too similar. MTG identity > any theme they are using.
I would have enjoyed a Norse or Egyptian plane a few years ago, but after Theros, I really don't want to see God's again. They were so pathetic. I don't care if they see fringe play in Modern. For half of the mythic to be a mediocre enchantment creature... no thanks

Project Booster Fun makes it less fun to open a booster.
I have been hoping for a Fairy tale themed set (more Disney and Grimm then Lorwyn). Fairy tales are meant to be be retold and alternate so it won't be that hard to adapt many of the themes into the set.

So obviously, this ended up being Kaladesh. Probably. Unless Maro meant totally, COMPLETELY new.
Anywho, with the need to continue Liliana's Chain Veil arc, Razaketh looking vaguely Egyptian and the comments about Monarch from Conspiracy 2 being similar to a mechanic in the October 2017 block, I reckon that block will be Egyptian world.
At this point, couldn't that mean literally anything? I can't imagine there are many world themes that have not been requested a billion and a half times. I would be more surprised if they managed to come up with a theme that someone hasn't already suggested to them.
Egypt would be a good one. They seem to be travelling through the colour scheme; zendikar green, Innistrad Black, Kaladesh red, so that leaves blue and white. So considering Egypt would be white, sun god ra or blue being a water world that seems harder to pull off at the moment. I say Egypt with Ra as a sun god that could be a key to bolas's new plan to end life.
