There's a mono artifact deck in Modern that uses 12 Vedalken. Given the vedalken's affinity for artifacts and their blue skin, are these likely Metathran sleeper agents that Urza seeded throughout the Multiverse prior to the Phyrexian Invasion? Could they have been contaminated by Karn while he was under Phyrexian influence? Seems like there's lots of storyline potential for the blue stoics.
They are empirically different (Note, both Vedalken and Metathran are creature types). I'm pretty sure the Vedalken are supposed to be native to Esper, and were taken to Mirroden by Memnach. Their presence on Ravnica is likely due to the fact that just about every species is on Ravnica, due to its planeswalker-hub like nature. They appear to have been invented purely so that the Mirrans could have a non-merfolk blue race.
Outside of the story, the Vedalken were one of the races invented by creative when they were testing the waters (heh) for non-merfolk blue races. See also the Cephalid that came before and the Moonfolk that came after.
They are a race driven by logic, and tend towards having affinities with artifice and metamagic.. Magic's Vulcans, if you will.
We don't really know of any higher origins of them.
... Wow. No.
I mean, we've been letting a lot of speculation go these days, but this is just SO far off to the right.
For the sake of conversation, I'll leave it open, but there is absolutely no connection between Vedalken and the Metathran. (and no connection between Alara and Mirrodin either.)

Mirroden was populated with species from other planes, was it not? Considering there are only two other planes with Vedalken, it's not a stretch to assume the Vedalken of Mirroden were originally from Alara, much the way the Loxodon appear to have come from Ranvica.

Actually it IS a stretch to assume it since all the inhabitants of Mirrodin were sent back to the world they came from.* We get a glimpse of that world at the end of Fifth Dawn, with Leonin, Vedalken, Goblins, and Humans all meeting for a summit by the sea.
That scene would have been impossible if it had been Alara because none of the details match.
*Horrible Scars of Mirrodin retconning not withstanding.
I was just playing devil's advocate. I don't believe it is either Alara or any plane we will ever visit. And personally I prefer the idea that the different tribes were pulled from different planes, instead of all of them from one plane.

Alara was sundered thousands of years ago.
There's no amount of bending that will justify the headcanon.
