I know that Shandalar has become the de facto plane for the core MTG sets. But we've seen a few interesting storied based on Shandalar in Uncharted Realms, and the plane itself has some history fromthe old MTG Playstation One game.
Do you guys think that there will someday be an entire block devoted to something happening on Shandalar, or will Shandalar continue to exclusively be "Generic Fantasy World" for the core sets.

I doubt we'll be seeing a Shandalar block, but never say never. There's a need for GenericTraditionalFantasyLand* for core set purposes, and right now Shandalar fills that niche.

I kind of hope so.
These little of glimpses of Shandalar used to make me giddy, but now I'm starting to get bored because it just feels like "generic European high fantasy dumping ground world".
If shandalar has been become the generic core set plane then we may at some point down the road get another dominaria based set.....i get that people didn't like Time Spiral (for the record I loved Time Spiral, full of good cards, and while it started the murder of how walkers used to be...it gave us at least a last look at several we probably wouldn't have seen otherwise). But that doesn't mean the plane is a bad place to have a set.

I doubt it. A lot of people from the olden days know Shandalar and everything that happened there. They will cry for blood if WOTC touches that rich flavour.

And that's stopped them from making it the place where Lili finds the Chain Veil? Or where Talrand is from? Or the dozens of cards we've gotten from there in the last few core sets?
The overwhelming majority of players have never heard of Shandalar.
Dominaria introduced new regions for new blocks, why can't Shandalar?

A core set is different. Core sets aren't total pictures of the entire plane.

I doubt there'll be a Shandalar-based block, just because of Shandalar's apparent mechanical theme (janky randomness; if you've played the game, you know why I say that).
That said, there could be a lot of interesting stories to tell there. But it's getting to the point of what I call the "Hoth rule". (For those who don't know, just about every Star Wars licensed videogame includes a Hoth level, even ones that take place in the Old Republic era when Hoth is just an uninhabited ball of ice.) What I mean is, they're using it whenever they need "a plane, but not any particular plane", turning it into...another brain bug! Eek!

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
What fascinates me is why Wizards didn't just invent a new plane on which Core Sets could take place. They took an existing plane from Magic's early history because old players might remember it and say "Hey cool, it's back!" without recalling any of what actually took place or happened or etc.
The same thing happened with Slivers. Wizards has a name people recognize and it's off to the races. Never mind that they don't really look like Slivers, that's what they are now. Stop asking questions!
Name value is all that's required. So I doubt Shandalar gets an entire block because while it's easy to discreetly wad all the classic beasts into a Core Set, a block tends to have limitations and a style guide. This puts Wizards in a corner because they either have to pound reset or work around an established theme. A decision easily avoided by keeping Shandalar as the place where the Core Set happens.
What is the background on Shandalar that people keep mentioning? I've been playing since Onslaught, but i can't remember ever hearing of Shandalar before the past few sets.
It definitely seems like Shandalar will be the new core set block for awhile. I doubt we'll be seeing any non-core sets taking place there. If you look at most of the planes since Dominaria (Ravnica, Innistrad, Alara, Lorwyn, Kamigawa, Mirrodin/New Phyrexia), all of them have a lot of unique flavor and are not very high-fantasy themed like Shandalar seems to be. There would have to be a very unique storyline for wotc to return to a generic plane like Shandalar for a full block.
I dont really see why people mind having a plane like Shandalar as a core set plane. People dont go to core sets for flavor, but it is nice to see a core set that feels a little more cohesive.

There were two places that Shandalar appeared before.
One was the Armada comics that followed the Ice Age.
The other was the first magic videogame, the Microprose game for the computer.

Most of Dominaria has recovered, or is on the way to doing so.
The only place that is basically unsalvageable is Otaria.

Or each core set should 've as context a new plane or region. I don't like the idea of Shandalar as the generic dump plane.
