What do you guys think of the idea of a Sci-Fi type plane? I don't think it's out of the realm of "impossible," but probably treading on the realm of "improbable." Is it possible for one plane to have more than one planet, or has that already been ruled on?
I'm thinking like a Warhammer 40k style plane (hopefully with multiple planets on the same plane, but I guess it could all be on one planet as well). The colors of mana would translate over fairly well, except for maybe green, but you could make like a primitive technological advanced races, kind of like the Orcs. Space Marines would be your go-to white mana. Eldar would be blue. Dark Eldar and Chaos Space Marines could be either black or red.
I'm not saying steal from Warhammer 40k, but I kind of like the idea of a sci-fi plane of exsistance. Ravinca is probably the most technologically advanced plane (except for maybe Phyrexia), but it would be interesting to go totally science fiction with it.
Like I said, it's probably never going to happen, I think I remember hearing about a "no guns" rule in Magic, but I still think it would be fun. I also doubt most of the fan base would like it too. What do ya think?
They've said that Mirrodin is about as sci-fi as they're going to get and that Innistrad is about as technologically advanced as they're going to get.
Interesting...I didn't really consider Innistrad to be all that technologically advance. I would think the Izzet in Ravinca would be WAY more tech savvy then the whole of Innistrad.
Well thanks for the info none-the-less. Wizard doesn't exactly always stick to there word, so I guess there's still a faint hope that they change there mind.
Does anyone still know if there can be more then one naturally occurring planet on the same plane?

I've wondered similar things, but it seems the lore of Magic seems to completely ignore the idea of planets. Even an acknowledgement of physics as an idea seems to be in the far future for most plane denizens, let alone astronomy or space travel. The D&D style fantasy is locked in an ignorant past, I think.

Except the Mirran watermark is a depiction of the planet of Mirrodin New Phyrexia. So to speak. Mirrodin New Phyrexia as a specific plane has no other planets just Mirrodin New Phyrexia and her suns/moons.
A plane is used both to refer to the dimensional space in which a setting takes place and the primary celestial body that occupies it, which is typically a planetoid.
The plane of Ravnica is occupied by the planet of Ravnica which is covered in the city of Ravnica, the capital of which is Ravnica.
There are exceptions; Lorwyn is flat like a map, Pyrulea is a dyson sphere, and it is entirely possible for a plane to have more than one 'planet' in it.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that parts of Innistrad were based on late 17th and early 18th century colonial America sans Gunpowder technology. The concept art for Kessig for example would fit in perfectly with that time frame.
I think what they mean by saying "Innistrad is about as technologically advanced as they're going to get." they mean "We can't push that particular timeframe much further with out running headlong into the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution." Although a Steampunk set during that "timeframe" would be interesting...
Anyway, back to the topic, I'm pretty sure that Mirrodin/Phyrexia are about as Sci-Fi as Magic's ever likely to get. If you're interested in Magic with a Sci-Fi twist, you might want to look up the "Space: The Convergence" Cube the was made a while back on the Cube Sub-Forum. It's functionally identical to Magic but it has an awesome Classic and Modern Sci-Fi feel.

Cube. The best way to play Magic. PERIOD. Come over and check it out. Also, check out my Peasant Split Card Cube.
The World of Pokemon RPG has been rebooted. Come over and check it out.
Void shows one of the Titan engines as well, pulled strait outta MechWarrior basically. Artificers are extremely advanced technologically, with ray guns and mechanical robots being fairly commonplace. The important distinction is that these machines run on magic, not electricity or combustion. There's nothing saying that you can't have more sci-fi, just that it has to be based on magic too.
But anyway, an interplanetary trip just feels really out of place in a storyline that revolves around interplanar trips. Every plane we've been to focuses on one planet, with good reason. I think it's safe to assume that we'll never visit a plane with actual space travel.

Dang! I've never seen the card, that is awesome. That's exactly what I was thinking of. And to me, it doesn't matter if it runs off of magic, that's cool too. I just want the atheistic of an industrial war-torn plane. Just replace electricity and combustion with magic, but keep the same look and weapons. I think it could be cool.

If you want "industrial war-torn", read The Brother's War. That should be right up your alley. No spaceships or anything, but it's a book that revolves around technological warfare.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, the concept of magic is just beginning to be explored in that book. Does that imply that the machines built by Urza and Mishra in that time period were not magical?
Yeah, likely we won't get more "technologically advanced" than the fantasy settings of Ultima 7. Mixing swordfight and magic with spaceships and laser cannons like Final Fantasy does would totally denature the game .

From what I recall, knowledge of magic had basically been lost. The Thran for example understood magic to a degree but their understanding was incomplete at best. They only understood and used Colorless magic, as seen in all the mana generating artifacts with Thran in their name.
Most, if not all, of the technology involved in the brother's war was based on Urza's and Mishra's understanding of the Thran's technology. So while magic was just being rediscovered during the Brother's War, the technology used was already based on the use of Magic...

What about Innistrad is so tecnologically advanced?
I suppose Skaab making involves quite a bit of technology, but besides that...
