We know that Gideon originally 'walked to Ravnica out of desperation because he'd heard there were a lot of planeswalkers there and he needed help to fight the Eldrazi and save Zendikar. Right now he ... doesn't really seem to be doing that at all. I know I've heard a fair amount of confusion and contention on that point, and I'd like to offer an idea that occurred to me.
I think maybe Gideon is actually attempting to gather support from the guilds, though in a terribly stupid way. Right now he seems to be focusing exclusively on the Boros, and I can see why they would attract his attention. He might believe that their large and well disciplined armies might be less likely to give into despair against the Eldrazi than the unprepared Zendikari, and their ranks include powerful angels and elementals.
The Izzet would be another good choice, since they might be able to invent some kind of armor or even weaponry that might be more effective than what the low-tech Zendikari have available. Unfortunately, Niv-Mizzet is currently obsessed with some other project and has focused all of the guild's resources to that end and is extremely unlikely to be interested in Gideon's problems.
In my opinion the best guild to provide a potential solution, and one that Gideon is very unlikely to turn to, would be the Simic. Gideon has a fair amount of experience fighting the Eldrazi and could provide the Simic with information on their otherworldly anatomy and biology. These unprecedented life-forms which would fascinate the Simic biomancers, who could tailor-make creatures specifically to fight the Eldrazi.
Unfortunately, all of these ideas run into the "can't take it with you" problem. Until someone rediscovers how to recreate a planar portal, the armies of the Boros, the technology of the Izzet, and the creatures of the Simic would be unable to actually confront the Eldrazi. So this just raises the question again: what exactly is Gideon doing?
Any thoughts?

Yeah, Gideon is confusing, or at least easily distracted.
Just a heads up: this thread is already dangerously close to Baseless Speculation. When replying, please focus on the question "what exactly is Gideon doing?" rather than just blindly speculating on how the guilds might fare against the Eldrazi. If it goes too far, we might just close the thread. Thanks.

So... what's the point?
Gideon isn't gathering an army he can't take with him, he arrived, starting looking for the organization he had heard about and found the guilds starting to tear each other apart with the guildless being caught dead in the middle.
I'm assuming he hadn't encountered the Gatless, and as a result, he went to the Boros in an effort to try to protect the citizenry from the crossfire.
This is what we actually know about him. He allied with the Boros in an effort to shield the innocent.

This my beef I have with him and his place in the plot.
What the hell is he doing?
I get the noble need to protect those weaker than himself and can appreciate that it is in his character but, he has to know he is pressed for time(unless some bit of previously written details show a difference in the passage of time from plane to plane).
He saw Emrakul, he knows what the Eldrazi are doing to Zendikar in his absence. You would think he would be doing a lot more than strapping on the tin deputy star and chaps of the Boros Legion.
I was envisioning a lot more from him and this whole block flavor wise to be honest but, it hasn't been as disappointing as Scars of Mirrodin so I can't complain too much.

My impression is that the Eldrazi threat, while still out there, isn't an immediate one. I'm thinking that at some point he has to come to the realization that he's not going to be able to help Zendikar in time, it's done for, but as long as they are trapped there the Eldrazi aren't out terrorizing any other planes. So as long as he can figure out a way to defeat them before they manage to get off of Zendikar, he can still save the rest of the multi-verse.
That's a point, actually. Gideon probably has no idea that the Eldrazi pose a threat to the multiverse as a whole. He doesn't know what they are, and might just regard them as a creature native to Zendikar. Maybe he's given up hope and found a new cause to rally behind.

Hrm. My impression was that the Eldrazi threat was more akin to a world ending event especially due how dire a lot of the flavor texts' in that set made the Eldrazi seem to be. I just figured if Gideon felt he needed to leave to get help the threat was far more immediate.
I would actually maybe buy him coming to that realization if we were shown him logically coming to it at some point either on the Uncharted Realms write ups or the trailer for Gatecrash(which was just more odd product push by Wizards instead of actual plot) or even that e-book that was released a little while back.
From what I can tell at this point all it seems to be is that Gideon Jura is playing deputy dawg to the Boros Legion in favor of actually doing anything constructive for his home. I hope I am wrong and all of this is a well written use of a decent character and well planned like the creative teams always like to tout.
Well clearly he needs Domri Rade's help to make Worldspine Wurm fight Emrakul. Value.
Wasn't he going to Ravnica to rally the Consortium? A guild of planeswalkers?
Maybe they have him doing dogwork to fix the city before they go to Zendikar. Scratch my back, will ya? Then I'll scratch yours. It's all very Fire Emblem when you think about it.

Uh... you are aware that Gideon isn't from Zendikar, right?
That was our assumption. I think his exact words were something like "group of planeswalkers".
And the Boros can't go to Zendikar. Planar portals haven't been invented yet.
well, directly from the Battle of Fort Keff:
Gideon knew it would take many of his kind to thwart this menace. He'd heard of an organization that operated between planes. An organization of planeswalkers. He would travel to Ravnica and find them. Hopefully there would be something left of Zendikar when they got back. Gideon whispered a vow to return and planeswalked away.
Aside from that, he already knew the Eldrazi weren't from Zendikar. He had spoken to a Surrakar that described them as "gods from outside".
The main thing about trying to find the organization is that... Jace destroyed the Consortium, and it was the largest organization of planeswalkers that had existed in ages. If there were some other organization, Gideon might have had a chance to find them, but the Consortium actually doesn't exist anymore and all of Gideon's plans sort of hinged on finding them.
Maybe they have him doing dogwork to fix the city before they go to Zendikar. Scratch my back, will ya? Then I'll scratch yours. It's all very Fire Emblem when you think about it.
I would like to believe that actually. It seems very plausible given how crazy Plansewalkers are to each other.

Perhaps its just me, but Gideon's Uncharted Realms piece didn't sell me on his priorities. Sure there are innocent people suffering here, but there's innocent people suffering everywhere, and meanwhile an entire plane is facing imminent annihilation while it's best hope is getting bogged down with a political revolt somewhere else.
Gideon, man, get your head in the game.

In the grand scheme, Zendikar is some podunk backwater plane that doesn't matter.
Ravnica is more important. Or at least more populated.
I know Nissa freed the Eldrazi Titans (Emrakul etc.), but wouldn't they be slow-moving? Creative could always say something like time flows differently on Zendikar than Ravnica to excuse Gideon getting entrenched in the Boros Legion's affairs.

Actually, no they couldn't. That creates MAJOR issues related to the myths like Urashima Taro and Rip van Winkle.
Walkers set foot on a plane and leave a second later to find a hundred years have passed.
First he abandoned the idea of chasing after his crush (Chandra) just to save the people of Zendikar. Now is saving the people of Ravnica. I don't think it is in Gideon's character to neglect the needy. He knows there is a big threat back in Zendikar but he can't just ignore the masses being killed in front of his eyes. He's not like Sorin who seems to manage his priorities well and can compromise lives for the sake of balance and order. Gideon is more of an idealist and that distracts him from his objectives.
Or maybe he finds out that he can't complete his plan yet -on Ravnica- and resorted to helping the people first before resuming his search of powerful companions to fight the Eldrazi.

Going back to Europe Tonight. will say goodbye to you all.
Gideon, I feel, is first and foremost a soldier. Unlike Ajani, who is a healer, or Elspeth, who strengthens those who do fight, Gideon believes in personally shouldering the responsibilities of the righteous path.
In Boros, Gideon sees people of a mindset like him: People committed to true application of justice, no matter the personal cost.
Perhaps Gideon sees the Boros Legion's structure as a useful source, to perhaps take their tactics and begin making a sojourn to all the worlds he can to find white or white friendly 'walkers who will unite to form a Legion of Planeswalkers to fight the Eldrazi.
Also, I think the reason he continues to work with Boros is to perhaps lead a more reasonable and more white aligned leader to take the helm, lest Aurelia's zeal turn the armies of Boros into more of a mob.
