Has anyone read the books around Lorwyn / Shadowmoore, or know anything about the Hobgoblins in the plane? I’m making a custom card and would like it to be a good fit flavor wise. The new card is functionally similar to Rise of the Hobgoblins so I’d love if anyone knows a name, ie, who was the leader of the hobgoblins? But I can work with anything...
IKR :’D looks like they’re mainly farmers (flavor text on the dbl strike guy) but for some reason they ‘rise up’ presumably to fight Oona (based on the cicada guy) The books probably don’t go into it much either, and i’m not spending $100’s and Hours to find out :’D I best start making things up!

Please share what you come up with! I like hobgoblins in D&D and have always wanted more from those hints we got in Eventide.

Well, I didn’t have much luck with MtG Hobgoblins, if they are mentioned in the books I couldn’t find anyone who’d read them. But i looked into the real world folklore and pieced together a (rudimentary) understanding:
Hobgoblins are kinda lame tbh :’D they appear in old stories and poems as domestic helpers, who help/do chores in exchange for stuff like bowls of cream (lol). Occasionally mischievous, they are mostly harmless. If they turn bad they become Boggarts. A few examples came up, with cutesy old English Names (Robin Roundcap, Blue Burches, Lubbar Fend).
I took these concepts combined with the Lorwyn storyline and what I could see from the cards, and concocted a basic story in my head where Oona has expanded into Hobgoblin territory enough to cause an uprising, and who else to lead this than the infamous Lubbar Fend :’D
The card itself I can’t decide on. I wanted it to be Tokens commander for Boros in an EDH Cube, so took the ETB from Rise of the Hobgoblins added a combat buff and gave it 3 cmc. Any suggestions are very welcome though as the card has not tested well!
I'd bet you could make a straight 1/1 for {r/w} with the ETB from Rise of the Hobgoblins and a static ability that buffs red and white creatures, and it would still be within acceptable commander power levels.
From what I can tell the Hobgoblins only existed after The Great Aurora turned Lorywn into Shadowmoor, and since their type line is goblin it is possible that they are transformed versions of one of the tribes that also did not get much backstory, like the redcaps who share the red hair.
Aside from the three cards with "Hobgoblin" in their name, the only other card referencing them is Rugged Prairie, as far as I know. The aurora transformed most of the goblins into RG wood dwellers, more feral versions of Lorwyn's original hedonistic RB goblins. The hobs seem like an offshoot that went the opposite way: Instead of becoming beast-like, they developed a more ordered kind of community. Hearthfire Hobgoblin implies that they are very territorial. I imagine them to be more or less neutral as long as they're left alone, but very quick to anger. Even a small offense can lead to a huge and very mean backlash. These two things combined could lead to longer periods of relative piece interrupted by short-lived, but huge-scale outbursts of violence that Rise of the Hobgoblins seems to reference.

If one-time token creation is too weak, how about a continuous effect? Boros doesn't have much access to ramp outside of artifacts, so you could do an effect that adresses this problem through token creation (while playing into the territorial/aggressive aspect):
"At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, if that player controls more lands than you, create a 1/1 red and white Goblin Soldier creature token."
An even stronger version (would probably require at least CMC4):
"At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, if that player controls more lands than you, create X 1/1 red and white Goblin Soldier creature tokens, where X is the difference."
Plays well with Goblin Trenches! Maybe you could make saccing a land part of the combat effect to increase self-synergy.
Most of the non-bogart golbins of Shadowmoor are a mystery. They're not boggarts, but it's implied that they stem from Lorwyn boggarts. Either way it's great the Black-aligned boggarts spawn evil Green boggarts and White hobs.

Probably this. Also in Lorwyn we have basicaly 2 types of goblins: Feral goblins (the ones that raids and attack other ppl) and more civilized and peacefull goblins(some of them played pranks, stole things, etc but did not attacked other ppl).
Almost all Lorwyn goblin communities (even the feral/more savage ones) were lead by Aunties so if we belive that the hobgoblins came from them then the leader of the villager would probably be a grandma/mother/female figure.
Hope that in a possible return to Lorwyn we get more lore on them, always loved Hobgoblin Dragoon

Tell me everything you know ^^
Thnx
A quick jaunt through the wiki doesn't reveal anything either and you probably consulted that source anyways.
Maybe try the MtG Vorthos reddit-page and see if anyone there has any info?
The Vorthos community will await the consequences of the Eldrazi Titans' deaths/sealing. We will keep the watch.

Yes I did search the wikis haha - figured they’re mostly farmers but not a lot beyond that.
