I liked that todays sorry showed that unless you have empathy you can't make true justice with law making.
Overall I loved Nicky's writing and stories. I also think wizards opening up to outside and diverse authors has been going great and Nicky I think is a prime example. Nearly all her stories have dealt with real world social issues but through a fantasy lens. I also wanna go back and reread them to see if they all interconnect since she was good at referencing her other stories. Hopefully we will see her again for the main storyline but I would be happy with more world build stories from her.
Add in a pair of novels from Greg Weisman bringing the Bolas/Gatewatch battle to its thrilling conclusion and a comic following Chandra written by Vita Ayala with art by Harvey Tolibao starting in November, and you start to get a picture of how Magic fiction is shaping up. Oh, and Weisman will also be writing the web fiction for the end of the Bolas arc in addition to the two novels he's crafting. Because we think he's great and hope you will too.

Yeah, I'm hella excited. The woman with the staff and the one with the sugegasa hat and whip-thing are new characters. Notably absent are many of the ancillary product Planeswalkers, excluding the deceased ones: Dack, Daretti, the Battlebond twins, Aminatou, Istrid, and Mu Yanling.
WOTC abandoned Garruk for the looks of it. He could be awesome in this setting, shame really, specially since he was one of the original Lowryn 5
Well last time we saw Garruk is was basically wanting to be left alone and likely would ignore Ral's beacon. Another thought is creative figured he'd want to go after Liliana and she already pretty busy this storyline trying to betray Bolas and didn't want to add in a plot of her confronting Garruk as well.
EDIT: I also called that Tibalt would be on Ravnica and might the War might be set up for him appearing in the Chandra comic. On that note we can could 3 walkers we know are "safe" after this set.
Full missing (who are alive) list is Garruk, Tezzeret, Yanling, Koth, Estrid, Aminatou, the Kenriths, Dack and Daretti.

First, Sorin got free, is pissed, and Nahiri is on the plane. Interestingly, both have great reasons to hate Bolas, so unless I missed the horn motif in their windows (very possible) they may even be forced to work together.
Second, Bolas is an absolute ******* fool to work with Ashiok. If there's anyone that is less trustworthy than Bolas it's that creepy mother****er. He's got new Leshrac written all over him Bolas already has Tezz as his Starscream, he's just asking for trouble with Ashiok.

I hope Arlinn doesn't die. I really like wolf mom :(.
Samut can get boom roasted for all I care. She's purposeless after the story anyway. She's only as cool as bolas is evil/relevant.
Tibalt feels like fan service. I'd be VERY surprised if his card isn't completely busted in half. Like immediate emblem to shut off life gain hose your deck kinda busted. Lol blood moon emblem? Sorry I'm feeling particularly vengeful today.
Looking forward to sorin/nahiri being on the plane as well as ugin if the three of them have a chance to hash things out. Nahiri seems like a cool character to keep around in story imho. I dunno if sorin can really do much of anything important in my eyes now. With avacyn gone and emrakul chilling near INN - his whole purpose for the last few thousand years is whatever.
Will be SUPER interested in Ob and Lilli discussing the gain veil of it comes down to it. Ob should also recognize nahiri and nissa.
I find it odd that nissa would have responded to the beacon given how driven to rebuild zendikar they made her during the end of amonkhet.
Full missing (who are alive) list is Garruk, Tezzeret, Yanling, Koth, Estrid, Aminatou, the Kenriths, Dack and Daretti.
Garruk is missing and perhaps addled to the point of ignoring the summon. Tezz might've found out of Bolas's intention and left.
I thought Yanling is the wing-blade lady, given it suits her design. Koth busy fighing Phyrexians or is dead.
Too little is known about Estrid. Could Aminatou grow up to become as powerful as Bolas? She did manage to ignite her spark early and is considered a very powerful PW even at her age.
Kentrith busy playing. Dack is still stealing.
Daretti last seen on Kaladesh, having too much fun at the moment?
I'm assuming the major planeswalkers that are missing are AWOL because they have anchor roles in future storylines - Koth and potentially Tezzeret for a return to New Phyrexia, for example. (And if War of the Spark is Bolas's last hurrah, the Phyrexians are the next logical villains to begin building up.) Dack (and Elspeth) being missing could indicate a return to Theros in the near future. Garruk also probably has a starring role in a set in the near future, hence his absence.
I agree that Sorin's inclusion is weird - I didn't think we'd see him again until the next return to Innistrad. I really, really hope they didn't just handwave him out of the stone wall offscreen, but I have a sinking feeling that is exactly what happened. Unless the beacon literally summons the planeswalkers, forcibly pulling them into Ravnica (which could also explain Nissa, although from a narrative standpoint I kinda hope Nissa gets involved to specifically because of Chandra).
Also... I hate to be morbid about this, but is it too soon to start taking bets on who is going to be killed off? And I say this as a person who genuinely hates character deaths except as earned closure to a long-running arc (e.g. Urza, Yawgmoth), but I worry WotC with the love of comic-book tropes is going to kill a few planewalkers off to establish the stakes of the conflict. (If I were Kiora or any of the new planeswalkers introduced in this set, I would be looking over my shoulder. I also worry about Nissa with Vivian waiting in the wings. Despite Nissa not being well served by various writers, I still believe she has untapped potential as a character.)
I am actually surprised there is no Tezz. Also you figure Garruk would show up. Koth not showing up makes sense. As does no Elspeth. Looks like three maybe 2 new walkers depending on if you think that is Yanling. Obviously one is the upcoming book. But again looking at these new walkers more Humans? More Humans...we don't need more Human Walkers.
Aminatou should not be on Bolas level cause training and experience should count for something. But her power is hax granted Bolas and most Walkers with AOE and/or telepathy should be able to kill her before she gets close to them.
Doesn't look we will be color balanced. 2 Colorless Walkers. Be interesting to see who gets the good cards and who gets the crap. I figure Bolas will be good since this is last hurrah. Davriel as well considering who wrote him. You figure Jace, Gideon and Lili get good cards as well.

I bet good money on Jaya, Old Mentor. And sure she said she wanted to help Karn with Phyrexia but two issues with that Jaya never did anything about Phyrexia in the past and Karn and Jaya were never friends before this recent trip back to Dominaria. Mostly she is old mentor though to Jaya so she is a dead women walking. I hope she gets a good card though. Yawgmoth vs The Nine Titans resulted in what half the Weatherlight Dead and 7 out of 9 of the Nine Titans gone by the time it was done.
Half the major legends on Ravnica dead is possible some are already dead like the Ghost Council. Bolas putting down 50% of the Walkers present though yeah no. I be impressed if a dozen Walkers fell in the fight quite frankly. As for who they kill personally I like them to kill some Human Walkers, we have too many Humans running around.
Chandra, Ajani and Tibalt are all safe though.
Gatewatch: Jace, Lili and Teferi safe. Gideon could die here and is next to Nissa most likely of the Gatewatch to die.
Team Bolas: Vraska, Domri, Dovin and Ral could all die quite frankly. Bolas is dead or banished. Kaya is safe her color pair is light. Vraska for Jace angst. Dovin cause using him here proves they don't know what do with him. Ral for playing both sides. Domri, his color pair is kinda lite but least likely next to Kaya.
Team Ugin: Besides Ugin none of this bunch is likely to die. Maybe Sarkhan. But Narset has done little. Sorin and Nahiri, seems weird place to end for either playing in the background.
New Characters: Davriel safe, Global Walkers safe, the female new walker in blue could die, probably not the POV character from the book. Vivien I mean should could but probably wont. They gave her a push.
Others: Karn safe for Phyrexia Arc, the rest of this bunch who knows the most likely candidates to pad the death count besides Team Bolas Members. This group is Kiora, Angrath, Arlinn, Tamiyo, etc.
I bet good money on Jaya, Old Mentor. And sure she said she wanted to help Karn with Phyrexia but two issues with that Jaya never did anything about Phyrexia in the past and Karn and Jaya were never friends before this recent trip back to Dominaria. I cynically expect three to six casualties, even though I hope I am wrong. Good call on Jaya - Dead Mentor cliche and her character lives in very similiar planeswalker card space (in terms of card mechanics)as Chandra means WotC likely sees her as expendable (sadly). Also, good call that some of the casualties will probably be Ravnica Legends and not (only) planeswalkers. (Aurelia dying so Feather can return to lead the Boros Legion in the future is a one possibility I can see.)
My crackpot theory is that Dovin helping Bolas is Doctor Strange giving Thanos the Time Stone. He's discovered a fatal flaw in Bolas plan and is ensuring the plan is carried out because it will remove a major threat to order (Bolas). We've seen him behave like this on Kaladesh.
Not likely, but I'm getting that vibe. We already have a known traitor to Bolas (Vraska, once Jace winter soldiers her), a surprise traitor would be cool.

Embrace the dark you call a home,

A legacy of lies,

Sing with me a song of conquest and fate
The black pillar cracks beneath its weight
Night breaks through the day, hard as a stone
Lost in thoughts all alone
Bolas will die, of that I am quite certain. Some contend that Wizards wouldn't kill such an iconic villain. My rebuttal to that is threefold:
1.) Bolas's death has been both built up (Gideon finding, specifically, a weapon for killing Elder Dragons) and heavilly foreshadowed (in the final paragraphs of The Chronicles of Bolas, which reflect that even Elder Dragons can die.)
2.) This is Bolas's apex, plot-wise. This is not just his endgame for the Gatewatch saga, but the endgame of his entire story and character post-mending. All the arrows of all his plots over the years have been pointing here; there's not much else for him to do after this, and certainly nothing bigger. What's Wizards going to do, keep bringing him back every couple years for increasingly evil and elaborate schemes?
3.) If they don't kill Bolas here, of all places, then seriously, when ARE they going to kill him? If he's ever going to die, it will be here, at the climax of his story and with all the heroes of the Multiverse arrayed against him and armed with weapons specifically for finishing him off.
I predict Bolas will die to either the Blackblade or the Chain Veil; maybe even as a combination of both. Aside from Bolas himself, Gideon and Liliana have really been getting hyped as the main faces of this final chapter.

Maro has mentioned that they just stain glassed existing art and from the background stuff it looks like all these walkers are going to be in War.

Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
I imagine most of the Bolas planeswalkers will betray him once they find out what he is actually up to.

I would say Tamiyo is most likely going to be helping Ajani or Narset because they are friends. I think I'd legit cry if Tamiyo dies.
Gaze upon an empty, white throne
A legacy of lies,
A familiar disguise
Sing with me a song of conquest and fate
The black pillar cracks beneath its weight
Night breaks through the day, hard as a stone
Lost in thoughts all alone
