So, the "Entities" are what's left when a plane gets destroyed and the Eldrazi destroy planes. Does that meam the Entities are Eldrazi poop?
And it seems that the Chain Veil might contain one as well, there is too many similarities for it to be something else. So Lili will probably do something to draw the attention of the "hunters", which will bring us to the new plot revolving around the Entities. Or, alternatively, they are somehow another part of Bolas' master plan, we still don't know why he arranged for the Eldrazi to be freed.

Not sure if they are meant to be tied. The bog was an thing long before Emrakul showed up.

I don't think so, I think while similar the chain veil is made of hundred of spirits who are the ones whispering to Liliana. Not just one entity.

Bolas released the eldrazi to see how planeswalkers would react to a muti-planar threat. Was revealed in the Amonkhet art book.

Dunno, we have seen that the Entities are capable of collecting souls, and I think it would be weird to have two very important items that are this close and yet something completely different. Also, the Veil doesn't seem to be how the Entity (if it indeed contains one) would manifest naturally, more likely it was somehow bound to it.
And I didn't know about the Eldrazi and Bolas, so thanks. It's kinda disappointing, though. I was expecting some bigger reason for that.
What if all sparks are an entity, or were at least related?
Well written, engaging. Innistrad, while not my favorite, always makes for a compelling setting. Nice to see more remote parts of it. Story was very textured and not linear plot points. I enjoyed it. It does play a bit in Orpheus territory, but I can see how it applies to Innistrad too. Shame she wasn't a choir girl for Avacyn or something, singing hymns. Would have been more on theme. That said, the Entity business adds a certain mystery. Eldrazi, collapsed planes, sparks, etc. It's becoming difficult to follow how they compare since it's ambiguous.
Do we know what these things are? Did we miss some ancient war where Sorin crushed the Local Religions
I vaguely recall something from the original Innistrad set about how people on Innistrad used to practice shamanism before the Church of Avacyn, relying on primitive elemental magic to protect themselves from the plane's various horrors. It's not clear if people simply stopping practicing shamanism because Avacyn's divine magic was more effective, or if the Church took a more active role in eliminating the shamans. Either way, Innistrad's witch cults are the lingering remnants of the old religion. I don't think they have anything to do with the entities in this story, though.
[...] Also interesting note; Ms Highwater, I believe the first ever female demon in Magic (other than the art of Glint which appears to depict a female Rakshasa).
I'll admit I had completely forgotten about Geyadrone Dihada. (Despite having recently read her wiki page when reading up on Dakkon Blackblade during Dominaria.)
Lady Orca I kind of feel doesn't count because she was a human, transformed into her later tar-pit-demon-thing form by Ramses Overdark, so wasn't "really" a demon.
Rakshasa Gravecaller... there's no way that the artist actually drew a female Rakshasa, even if the art description called for it. It has a "beard" isn't wearing a top and doesn't have breasts. All of that would be forgivable/hand waveable (they could be indistinguishable from males) if not for the art of Glint clearly showing a female Rakshasa to compare it to.
But you are correct. Geyadrone predated Ms Highwater by a hefty margin.

It definitely seems like the Entities are being seeded for future Big Bads. Maybe to take the place after Bolas' arc is finished or possibly a bit after that. They're certainly implied to have potential as a multi-versal threat. Just the thing for another "thrilling" Gatewatch adventure.
I don't really think that they're related to the Chain Veil, they didn't seem all that similar to me in their execution. Neither Davriel's, nor what we saw of Tacenda's Entitiy seemed... pluralistic? multiplistic? (they came across as a singular being, where the Chain Veil is multiple beings and has multiple voices). As far as we know, the Chain Veil started as many, and became one. The Bog entity started as one, became many, then reformed as one.
I don't think that would be the case, or else why wouldn't he have offered her his power during Eldrich Moon, when they were all but certain to die without it? (Granted, up against Emrakul they were all but certain to die with it as well, but any little bit might have helped.)
Davriel's Entity also regenerates his body/heals his wounds. The Raven Man has, as far as I am aware, never demonstrated that ability, again, even when Liliana was all but certain to die. (The Chain Veil stepped in on Amonkhet, but the Raven Man never has.)
Davriel is mostly B ( Sanderson pitched him as a mono-black heroic character) but a strong U side as well as a tiny bit of W for liking order and social structures, but mostly for others and not himself. Sanderson wrote a lot of Davriel thinking of how much he and Liliana would clash. He is from a known plane but Sanderson isn't allowed to say.
-The bog entity is G (though it acted a little B in its shattered state trying to reform), Darrel's entity is B. Entities are like "mana reservoirs--the collected mana of a plane--that can be tapped to power spells, but with dangerous results." The m15 soul cycle was an inspiration for him and they are formed from special circumstances. Sanderson can't confirm if anything else outside of his story is an entity. While mostly Sandersons idea, he worked with creative for work with MTG lore and think we will be seeing more of the entities.
-Tacenda started as mono R and her magic came from Sanderson wanting to show some non-combat magic but her personality came out more GW leaning hard on the G, so Sanderson now see her most G and secondarily RW. While in Sandersons head he thought of Tazenda becoming a planeswalker in the end and the bog entity being the source of her walking, Sanderson knows that doesn't full work in magic lore as well as not wanting to force in another walker so he left is up in the air for creative to use how they want. In Sanderson head Davriel is the same, while Davriel thinks that its his spark and "ignited when he he saw the true nature of the multiverse" (this is canon to how Davriel sparked on the magic lore).
-The demons would be B, though Miss Highwater has some RU to her, while Crunchgnar has some RG to him. Miss Highwater and Davriel relationship was something Sandersons had thought up in college and she was the demon he knew before hand he wanted to include.

That's what I thought indeed. Her basic motivations are Black but the initial means to get it were White and her power suit (super strength, "light blasts" and ghosts) are very Green/White.
Its funny entities act similar to Oldwalker Sparks what with that massive mana pool and free regen with limits though except here you can collect entities and stack them together to grow in power.
I thought it was the best story we've had in a long, long time.
I too thought maybe Raven Man was an entity, but as Sanderson thought of them after, and they weren't around before his story, I now have my doubts.
It seems, though, that entities are different, and may provide different power/motivations. Big when fully vested in Tacenda seemed very different than Davriel's entity.
If they come from planes that are no more, does that include artificial planes, I wonder.
I'm excited to learn more about these Entities, and about what group is hunting Davriel. Who'd he steal the Entity from? What plane did he cause to have so much violence? Looking forward to those answers.

I'd pay money for a Sanderson mtg novel.
The Raven Man almost certainly isn't an Entity. If he was and Liliana somehow acquired him before she sparked, she would most probably know. Also, she would't have to go through the whole thing with Josu to spark.
Raven man at this point almost has to be Bolas at this point right?
Given that Nicol is an even more powerful Mind Reader than Jace is he would instantly gronk to somebody else playing with what is now his toy and very quickly make it dead.

Unless the Raven Man decides to show up when Bolas is around (which could be a serious mistake), all he has to go by are Lili's memories. I don't think that would be enough to track him down...
Also, the Raven man seems to be similarly skilled schemer as Bolas, except more patient (UB instead of UBR). I'm really not sure who I would place my bet on.

I'm pretty sure he was *dead* at the point and time.

Unless he is working with the Raven Man and/or the Raven Man plans line up with Bolas plan. He seemed eager for Liliana to join Bolas to learn how to control the chain veil.

Been reading this on my lunch breaks and finally finished today. This was a great little dip into this world, and considering I'm not a huge fan of Innistrad to begin with, that's saying something. I loved Davriel, he could have easily been a cliche, but he still kept me interested in what was happening and how he came to be involved (I get his desire for a quiet evening with a good cup of tea).
I think the length was also great. The novels seem to be too much and the short stories not enough, a novella is just right. Here's hoping WOTC keeps going with this concept and also I think I should read some other Brandon Sanderson.
- A person using an alias and hiding from some very powerful Innistrad unknowns.
- considers Innistrad home
- Repeated refers to being "only human".
- A meticulous mind and fantastic understanding of demon behaviour.
Is Tybalt getting a reboot?
Except Davriel isn't Innistrad native, the hunters he is hiding from are interplanar, and he isn't very fond of devils. Also, Davriel is UB and Tibald mono-R or BR.
Davriel does have devil mooks, though he really doesn't overlap with Tibalt at all. Its like saying Sherlock Holmes is the same character as the Joker.
