Summary
-New novella Magic: Children of the Nameless by Brandon Sanderson
-It stars Tacenda a girl from Innistrad and will cross paths with new planeswalker Davriel.
- Sanderson was more interested in making his own story instead of furthering an already established character and was give Davriel who outside of broad strokes of character, was a blank slate for Sanderson to create. Seems like Davriel will appear some point in the main storyline.
-It will be free and be available to download tomorrow.
Well I guess this was our story treat that was promised for us for December. From the Wheel of Time I liked Sanderson and look forward to this story ^.^

Whoa that's sudden. And Brandon Sanderson is a big name. Some people really like his stuff and some people really don't but in Magic terms he's a fresh voice. I'm curious to know who Davriel is, where he's from, and why he's decided to pose as a Kessiger lord.
Wonder if this is the unnamed Walker on the Ravnica cover
Assuming, safely, THIS is him? Then no for sure.
Also, the cover character clearly has a role in the next couple set stories. Sanderson wanted to make up a new character who had nothing to do with the current storyline. This novella is a complete side story.

To be clear Sanderson said in the interview with iO9 that Wizards wanted him to make a character that would be relevant to the upcoming story line. He will likely brought into the main story post Bolas saga.

Still convinced the guy on Beseech the Queen is wearing a Mitra-type hat. Wake up sheeple!
Davriel Cane just wants a quiet life. Gotta say, I really enjoyed the story. Davriel's got a fun personality and his banter with the demons was pretty fun.
Sarcastic foppish napwalker was something I didn't even know I needed, but I'm really glad we've got it now. Also Sanderson once again does a really good job with all of the magic and how they function within the story.
Just finished the story and I gotta say Davriel Cane is a delight of character. Gotta say he is definitely UB.

Lol I love him mostly because I can use him to bash Lili...a Demon Expert on Innistrad that Lili could have consulted with lol...
I appreciate the versatile spell casting though.
Affably Evil is overdone but surprisingly absent from Magic right now so archetype filled.
I would guess we see him off Innistrad first as we only tend to get back around every 4-5 years.
The parts with the entity bring up interesting implications, though overall it felt far too much like the whisperings of the chainveil. Also considering the ending what is the possibility that Tacenda upon receiving the BogEntity planeswalked away ? And if she did that brings up the fact that obtaining an entity might actually cause/force your spark to ignite ? It seems to fit considering Davriel is wary of using the entity's power and is so bent on hiding his identity from fear of being followed...so Entity Bearers might all be multiversal.
Also with Tacenda possibly ascending it finally gives me the Bard planeswalker we've been missing

Tacenda becoming a planeswalker is what I got out of it too, I'm thinking she's mono-green since how nicely her and Davriel
personalities worked off each other and her believing in fate, although it seems like modern Innstrad has naive walkers everywhere.

This Entity, like myself, is the remnant of an ancient plane. Destroyed, consumed, its power condensed. It is the soul of an entire land, you might say.
Stuff that immediately jumps to mind are Serra's Realm being in the Weatherlight - that also had an interaction with angels and a distant call on souls, plus we have the reference with Tamiyo's scroll of Planar Collapse.
Segue as that was rewritten by Emrakul - the other thing that comes to mind is maybe Eldrazi collapsing planes and the Entities being somehow left over or created in that process?
Finally, Myojin of Night's Reach is the other "entity" we have seen be involved in planar travel but the hints don't seem quite right for that, unless something in the Kamigawa novels is familiar.
Davriel's whole bit is sort of uncomfortably close to Liliana with demon contracts, lordship on Innistrad and a mental entity created from the destruction of a civilization that wants to be used for great power. I guess maybe he could be involved in trying to get The Raven Man or the Veil out of Liliana after it takes her over or something.
One more I forgot on the threads of demons and destroying worlds - Ob. Uh...could be looking for Entities maybe.
I wonder if its also a comment on how far removed the village is as well as the protections Davriel has a lord. None of the character mention the eldrazi horrors, just the angels going mad so I wonder if the area they where in wasn't touched as much by Emrakul. And they haven't mentioned the nobility much outside of vampires, but Davriel being able to sleep through things while in his remote manor shows a level or protection we haven't seen much on Innistrad.
Some of my thoughts on Davriel;
I think he is a delight, a witty anti-hero dandy who has a fun magical ability and used to be a wanna-oldwalker. From the MTG stream today Sanderson (who is a huge magic nerd btw as well which means he might do more stories and i'd love it if he would write Davriel when he crosses over into the main story) said that Davriel is blue/black but if put into a mono-colored card he'd be mono-black. He also would be a fun foil to Liliana should he join the gatewatch (I don't think he would unless its another Liliana situation where he makes a "deal" with them) and defiantly would get a migraine from trying to poke inside Gideons mind.
If I understand right Davriel is from Ulgrotha?
I wonder in what context we will see him in the future. A return to Innistrad seems the likes answer since he staying put there trying to keep the being hunter him from figuring out where he is. Don't see him doing much planar jumping unless he wants to get something like Indian food from Kaladesh.

Best part was Dav and Ms. Highwater's conversation about peasant fashion. lol
Also: 5colors, Dav said he only managed to learn a few phrases in the language. I think it's more likely that he has visited Ulgrotha but isn't from there.

What threw me is that he mentions he he learned it in his youth, although now thinking on it he might have meant his early planeswalker days and not as him as a child which is how I had originally read the context.

First off I am a huge Sanderson fan. I have all his books and his cosmere reminds me of MTG lore. I mean his World Hoppers are basically planeswalkers.
Brandon is also a HUGE Magic fan. So him writing a magic story is freaking awesome.
I read the book and it is awesome. Davriel was basically kelsier to me. Great read and the Entities are very intriguing and I hope WOtc expand upon them.
After reading the book I went to Reddit and low and behold mister mistborn himself named what he thought the colors for davriel and tacenda are. dav is UB. And tacenda us RWG (her singing is red passion, the entity is mono green, and her village is white green)
And just like typical Sanderson reads so many questions need to be answered. We need a Word Of Brandon to where he would take the Entity idea.
I thoroughly enjoyed the novella, though there was one inconsistency that I noted, overall timeline wise (not within the story itself, but as a part of the greater MTG narrative).
Ms Highwater says that she's been with Davriel for four years, but she also makes reference to having been in the Helvault, which would mean that the story is set 4 years post Innistrad block. The problem with that is that they also state that the events of Shadows over Innistrad happened last year. I'm all but certain that SoI block stated that it had only been one year since the Helvault. Not three. The MTG wiki timeline lists the events of Innistrad as 4558/9AR and SoI as 4560AR.
Overall, that's a minor thing, but timeline inconsistencies kinda drive me crazy.
Also interesting note; Ms Highwater, I believe the first ever female demon in Magic (other than the art of Glint which appears to depict a female Rakshasa).
