Hi everyone! Been a while since I posted here (maybe a decade) and it's been about that long since I read any of the MTG novels/lore - I stopped just before Time Spiral. I've recently been getting back into the series thanks to the announcement of Dominaria (I'm about 25% of the way into The Brother's War for the third time), and this forum + reddit + the MTG Wiki have been indispensable in locating things like the new collected editions of short stories. I'll probably pop back up later as I look into which of these collected editions are worth reading, but for now, I am preoccupied with something else.
I've been looking for ebook copies of some of the older novels, as my mass-market paperbacks are in pretty terrible shape before maybe Odyssey. Sadly, I found that nothing before Mirrodin was ever officially made available as ebooks. And then maybe 3 days ago, I noticed newly released ebook copies on amazon of Rath and Storm and the "">Ice Age Cycle.
Does anyone know where these came from? The poor condition of the cover picture for Rath and Storm (and the Shattered Alliance to a lesser extent) makes me worry these are not legit. The Ice Age cycle in particular is definitely worth a re-read, so I would love to know if I should get these. Any thoughts or knowledge about these releases? Thanks!
I don't know. The publishing wing is pretty disconnected from the rest of the company. But that's amazing, because The Shattered Alliance used is currently retailing for around $75.
So, now I consider myself lucky for having bought it at half price!
Really, the prices for some of the Magic novels are crazy, you would think they are incredibly good, incredibly rare or incredibly sought after... I' m not sure any of these three is true...
For sure - just checking out some of the 'sold listings' for magic the gathering novels on ebay, the Ice Age Cycle has gone for as high as $80.00 + tax (USD), while individual copies of books from Legends II, The Brother's War, the Thran, and even some individual Ice Age Cycle novels have all gone for between $45.00-$65.00. I suspect the price/scarcity is a combination of being out of print for so long, never having been the most popular gaming fantasy novels (compared to, say, Dragnolance/Drizzt Saga), and being owned by the kinds of fans of things who are unlikely to part with such items.
Hopefully this all means that more pre-mending ebooks will eventually come out!
Good to know! Wizards should really start to advertise more this thing, however, and not only let the fans casually stumble upon... strange there wasn't any announcement with all the other Dominaria stuff! Probably later?
Looks like the mods already added these to the pinned thread, but Wizards just released so many more e-books: The Artifacts Cycles (Thran, Brother's War, I Planeswalker, Time Streams, Bloodlines), and the Invasion Cycle (Invasion, Planeshift, Apocalypse.
I just want to say, I've been looking for the Planar Chaos and Future Sight ebooks forever. And I'd like to say 'thank you' a million times for bringing this to my attention!
The Gathering Dark was reissued in Coldsnap fat packs, so maybe that led to a legitimate eBook as WOTC was doing eBooks for new set novels at the time.

Also, I cross-posted this on reddit, where someone said they have bought The Gathering Dark and that it seems legit:
