Slimefoot is too adorable, but Liliana was interesting in this story too. The woman is literally trying to figure out how people don't just look out for number one all the time, which is adorable in its own right (at least to me).
the buddy-buddy relationship between Shanna and Raff is classic. Kinda reminds me of Tangarth and Squee. speaking of which...no Minotaurs on the new Weatherlight crew? really?
Also, I'm wondering if Lili's new soul searching was inspired in any way by Jace's rather harsh treatment of her. It's easy to use, manipulate and discard people you don't really care about. but I imagine watching her bridge with Jace get burned to cinders might be a real come-to-Serra moment for good ole Lili.

Whatever the reason, though I agree that Jace was probably the catalyst, I like that they're continuing to develop her character. It makes it all the more interesting when In Bolas's Clutches happens.
Also Gideon's "It's not my problem" comment is pretty uncharacteristic of him, isn't it?
That was very cute. But uhm, they did mess up a lot lore wise again. They have little to do with Yavimaya yet they keep bringing it up even in reference to Molimo who's from Llanowar. Also, they're originally from Sarpadia. Odd.
You're right, they messed up the lore, after all what kind of twisted world is this in which things change over time and people move from one place to another, also no one said Molimo is from Yavimaya, the only thing that was said is that Multani sees him/it as a rival.

Today’s story was serviceable, cute but with some awkward and overly simplistic dialogue from the characters, I mean I’m pretty sure most people’s reaction to a fungal invasion would be with greater alarm.
Looks like we only have two stories left, and hopefully we’ll have a better idea about Battlebond and future sets afterwards.

don't care for these stories which don't advance the plot. cute story but idk, been wanting to see plot progression, not this right now
There's a time for PLOT, and there's a time for actually fleshing out the characters in it, and sometimes the fleshing out requires taking a breather. The fact that we have an issue with one or the other is a result of the framework the story is in.
So Issue 9 Get Everyone Together, 10 Assault on Base, 11 Fight Belzenlok and 12 Bolas Appears?
Doesn't seem to leave much time to explain stuff and mend fences on the core issues.
Hey, you forgot the story centered around Slimefoot which is essentially one long deeply philosophical monologue from the thallid's perspective.
It was a joke wizards!
Anyway, I liked this story. Light on plot, but still neat fluff. Honestly I'm just glad Slimefoot got an entire episode decidated to him. He must be the happiest little fungus in the multiverse now.

if we got two stories this week, I wouldn't complain
Myvonly question is this: Karn is on the ship, yet the Weatherlight likes Jhoira better? How long was she a captain when they made the ship? I remember it irked me when I read the novel because she becomes captain 5 lines before the end of the book and when we see the Weathelight again its during Rath and Storm. Karn was on the ship for years. The ship actually talked to him. They are both parts of the Legacy. What gives?
That is all great they couldnt spend some time explaining some crap? Like why Jaya is looking for Karn? They were never friends on page before...or how the frak Jhoira got Teferi's Spark and no Wizard's Mana Rig is insufficient. Or why the frak everyone let Belzenlok build up a power base for decades before serious action was needed.

I'm thinking they should have kept that mythical second set, since it seems the story got compromised in some aspects when that set died.

They should have cut the fluff quite frankly. By that I mean a new Weatherlight crew...the Weatherlight Saga works because they were the main characters. The Gatewatch is not being benched anytime soon Maro and other Wizards Employees have made that crystal clear. Will see less cards for them but story wise they will dominate. This is made worse by them not letting the Weatherlight even Planeswalk so its not like will see them until a few years. But looking at the characters I am sorry why do u need Raff when you have Teferi, Jaya, Lili and Chandra? Shanna, Gideon does her job better? Arvad another Gideon Light. Tiana you got Karn and Jhoira for artifice. Like I said it be hard enough to make everyone shine against Belzenlok but they doubled the number of characters present and spent too much time getting the old gang back together. This story could have easily started with the Teferi, Jhoira, and Karn back at Tolaria Academy with no one batting in eye.

I'd keep Slimefoot in any event, and you can't convince me otherwise.
When this story end I'll need a spin-off about the adventure of Slimefoot and his friend Arvad, obviously Tiana and Raff have to be recursive character.
Yes, I think the crew has a lot of potentials and it would be a waste to be a one-off, given the plane, the ship, and their own.
Slimefoot is great, though it is kinda odd that nobody seems more alarmed by it. What can I say, Serra works in mysterious ways.
Loved this chapter. My favourite of all. Seeing the characters during their off-time provided another perspective that I much enjoyed. You really have to visualize the mini-scenes in your head to appreciate them though - like that moment with Gideon cleaning his blade.
There really wasn't much actual story so far - it all seems very insignificant to the greater worldstate. Liliana could have used the veil to kill Belzenlok in the first chapter and got captured by Bolas afterwards and nothing much would have been lost. The old characters coming back just seem like a nod to fans without much impact - you could have written the story the same without them and the Weatherlight.
I suppose it does prepare things for two future stories - Karn in Phyrexia and Teferi handling Zhalfir. But again, that could have been told through off-screen dialogue without Karn and Teferi actually appearing.
But again, that could have been told through off-screen dialogue without Karn and Teferi actually appearing.
To that I would say "Be careful what you wish for".
Well considering how much we were actually told about Karn's/Teferi's plans, would it really be that much different? This is what I would do:
Start with Jhoira rebuilding the weatherlight and assembling the team. Spend the next few chapters building up Belzenlok as the villain - how he rose to power, why he should be feared, establish him as a threat. While investigating and preparing for the fight, Jhoira learns from side characters what Karn and Teferi are up to (this could be as cryptic or as concrete as you want, both would serve to establish background for future stories). Last couple of chapters are focused on the actual fight with Belzenlok - with Jhoira meeting Gideon/Liliana somewhere in the stronghold (perhaps captured due to Liliana being weakened and Gideon doubting himself or refusing to use the Blackblade) and joining forces out of necessity. If the next story is focused on Teferi, have him show up last second in a classic "looks like we're beaten, what could save us now?" moment (Teferi learns that Jhoira has been asking about him at the Academy and decides to keep an eye on things for example.)

I just have two questions:
1.) Is Liliana's and Gideon's story up to this point omitted?
2.) Why would having Teferi show up last second be any better than actually giving him proper attention, given how major he is supposed to be as a character in this story?
Meh I think you could easily had Jhoira, Teferi and Karn start at Tolaria and be going over Urza's old notes to track down useful artifacts before Belzenlok gets to them in order to stop New Phyrexia and Save Zhalfir. Jhoira can focus on raising and fixing the Weatherlight while Karn and Teferi do some good old dungeon raiding.
I'm torn. I want stories like this, because it's character and world building of some sort...but at the expense of actual advancement of story that will impact future sets.
I really enjoyed the pacing and style in the first 3-4 stories and sung their praise. As the story has continued though I'm not sure. It feels rushed, there is no sense of urgency, and I'm feeling a little...let down?
I'm not sure if I want more stories, smaller cast, less filler, longer narratives, more combat, more relics or just all of the above. The story is slipping towards unsatisfying again, for me anyway. Especially given the hand waving and lack of information on specific things.
If the story has gone out of its way prior to now to give the audience a specific set of rules about a plot subject, you kind of have to explain and dig into deviations when you go back to the material. Thallid origination and why everyone is so chill with them, teferi's spark, karn not attuning to/speaking with the power stone while slimefoot can, the cylix, why Arvad As one of the only characters with the willpower to not give into vampirism (although different, yehenni is in a similar boat) etc. It's just a lot of loose storytelling. I don't expect answers for everything, but the narrative should be more transparent to the world building. Maybe that's one of the boons of being on a singular plane for so long in the early days.
This isn't a dig against Martha, I just think creative needs to nail down more of this going forward and provide a higher quality product in their information and story highlights for the author. The stories read like she struggles to tie stuff in within the confines they've placed on her (the story with Jodah especially). I expect better story to story continuity from a writer of her caliber.
Obviously the thallids have spread, that's been established since at least Time Spiral. The problem is that this story seems to imply that both Slimefoot's origin and (depending how you read it) the origin of thallids in general lies in Yavimaya.
"Well, thallids are from Yavimaya, and are sort of related to mushrooms," Raff explained. "They were originally created as a . . . Uh, I'll tell you later. It's a little awkward to get into all that with it standing there. This one probably came aboard as a spore, stuck to that tree elemental seed Jhoira used to regrow the hull. Oh, hey, and it's had like ten babies already."
Thing is, they're not "from Yavimaya", they're all over the place now and they were originally from Sarpadia and the spore came from Llanowar.
"They're thallids, from Yavimaya, probably," Tiana said.
Llanowar*
Slimefoot twisted its upper part to regard Jhoira closely. She watched it steadily for a long moment, then smiled. "I must have brought them here with Molimo's seed, so we'll have to take them back to Yavimaya when we have a chance."
If it's from Molimo's seed, why return it to Yavimaya instead of Llanowar?
Karn continued, "Our success is not guaranteed, but we are a formidable group." He hesitated, then said, "I'm sorry I had to disturb the earth of Yavimaya to retrieve the cylix. I know it was disruptive to every being living in the forest nearby. But I thought it was necessary. I need to take it to New Phyrexia and destroy their plane once and for all. I mean to end them forever."
Again...
Anyway, I know I'm being pedantic. Ignoring these minor things the story was great, cute fluff and I'm glad it exists in the MtG lore.

I think the Return set would be the new Weatherlight crew and Teferi zipping around the plane to find more of the mythical Urza-made artifact dumps, in order to save Zhalfir. But then, if he doesn't save Zhalfir in this set, how is he the 'hero of Dominaria'? Who knows.
I expected Slimefoot to be more grumpy. A bit too cutesy for me, but I dig Slimefoot. I've had a thallid/saproling deck for ages.
