I understand why people are questioning Vona's color identity. My personal justification for it is that usually a color identity is heavily influenced a character's goals and then means by which they achieve those goals. Now Vona certainly uses her vampiric powers a one means, but I think a greater means by which she achieves her personal satisfaction is the church itself. Again, just the way I personally interpreted it.
Good story today, cool to get a vampire pov and celebrity couple Vrace is fun. I really like how the one event portrayed in “River’s Rebuke” tied everyone’s story together.
I’m starting to wonder if we’re greatly overthinking the importance of Arguel and Aclazotz. This story showed us that Mavren Fein is the legion visionary searching for Orazca and our cast of characters seems preety full. Don’t get me wrong I think it would be awesome to see a demon bat god but I kind of wonder if Arguel and his temple run are more of a feature of the world than a plot point.

My biggest reason to believe Aclazotz is involved is Elenda went to Ixalan (continent) then back as a vampire after getting, as Mavren calls it, "the blessing of the night" which is something a worshipper of a night or darkness god would get.

I'm of the belief that none of the characters mentioned on the flip cards(Vance, Adanto, Arguel) will show up on creature cards. I also think they'll save Aclazotz for the return to Ixalan.
Too many writers portrait female leaders like a mother, which is clearly stereotype, I'm glad Vraska step out of it, I like her evolving design a lot. The part she fell from the same spot she attempted planeswalk was funny, I thought she was gonna fall into the water like Jace.
Mavren being a religious fanatic during blood fast was hilarious, in a Mad Prophet kind of way, and his calm, gentle demeanor is also a cute contrast, while remaining pious the entire time.
Vona is black/white. Her behaviors and inner desires represent the black part, while her longevity, loyalty to the crown, and excuse-making are clearly white. She is what Mavren would be if his faith and self-control weren't as strong.
Tishana and Huatli is in an odd partnership. While it happened a little too quickly, it's understandable given Tishana's ability to sense planswalking energy, any other merfolk would not be as reasonable.
Angrath feels like Rakdos thus far, first of his race? And given his alignment it's possible that he is allying with Vona and Kumena in this one, the group Jace sensed.

- Jace and Vraska were good as always, but when Jace started blabbing about aetheric stuff I got compeltely lost. What in the world is aetheric north and how does he know what it is, considering he's been mindwiped and this is the first time such a thing's been mentioned?
From the flavor text on the compass I am going to say the strongest Leyline on a plane.
Vraska caring for people have been hard to explain but this story kinda clears it up. She view others kinda like a pack (green) but more based on survival of the fittest. She cares for them but also leaves them to thier own survial and trust they can take care of themselves (black).
Much like Drana..they are HER pack they belong to her and Oketra help anyone who harms them.
Vona is a good example of why you need to keep busy if you are immortal. Especially if you are an immortal vampire with a powerful thirst and prone to boredom.
[Morgan Freeman Voice]Immortal time is slow time, you gotta keep busy. That is why Urza built an Academy, genetically modified a race but his favorite way to keep busy was secretly building a super weapon out of an air ship.[/Morgan Freeman Voice]
As for the story itself, It was good. The Visionary Vampire was nice, the generic evil vampire can GTFO though.
Jace and Vraska continue to be the best thing magic has done in years plot wise. Ravnica 3 : The Guildpact and the Gorgon getting giggy with it. Will be Really interesting now, and Vraska still hasn't told him -everything- which may bite her in the rear.
I love the voice of Thunder..but I don't care about Hulati..maybe the Dinosaur knight will drown in a river.
-Vraska caring for people have been hard to explain but this story kinda clears it up. She view others kinda like a pack (green) but more based on survival of the fittest. She cares for them but also leaves them to thier own survial and trust they can take care of themselves (black).
There was a longest time I thought around this topic in general and I personally concluded that aspect is mono-G actually. To me this kind of behavior is usually (not always, but still usually) a combination of "survival of the fittest" and "I hope they do make it back" into some result of "This will make them stronger" nurturing that G would do, because it feels "natural" (mileage may vary especially on MTG where we have so many planes, but Ixalan's nature doesn't seem too far off from the typical "generic spectrum" of nature).
"I don't care if they survive or not as long as I do" and "I hope they survive, but if they don't they were just weak and I wouldn't cry for them" is the very thin line between B and G in cases like this and while we don't actually see all the way into Vraska's thoughts this time round, the entire storyline has given off the vibes of the later.
I almost feel like Vraska's being a lot closer to Jace so quickly than her other crewmates now because she might have this innate fear of the backlash when she can leave the plane - she walked in expecting an assassin's job and ended making friends to some degree in the process. Like I mentioned earlier, the openness of Ixalan is unbalancing her compared to stifling that Ravnica had shoved on most of her life. Jace, being a known planeswalker to her, is technically her key to potentially maintaining that sort of relationship post-Ixalan and I think she's subconsciously trying to latch on to that (the more conscious part is presented as the "manipulating Jace" scheme we see on the surface).
Then again, I may breaking the characterizations perhaps a bit too realistically and the planeswalkers, being superheroes of some sort probably means that plan of "manipulating Jace and revolutionizing Ravnica's society" might just be that.
I imagine we will get to the outside of Orazca at the end of this set, and the plot of the next one will be focused on the race through the hidden temple, and of course someone will get stuck trying to put together a Silver Monkey.
I liked the piece overall, a workmanlike setup for the main concluding action of this set's storyline, though the actual execution of the writing still is pretty uneven. But it did its job. We've got our factions set up and all on the case. One interesting thing is that with the exception of Mavren Fein, all of the factions seeking the city are starting from the same general geographical location. That means that there's a lot of probability for them coming into conflict during the course of their journey, rather than just at the end when they find Orazca.
Speaking of Mavren, I like him. I feel like they're doing exactly what I'd hoped with the contrast between Mavren and Vona as a (relatively) good and (definitely) evil pair of faction representatives. Good parallelism among the various factions, who all have a similar pairing (except, so far, with the Sun Empire, which makes me more confident that the Emperor will turn out to be more villainous later on). Having multiple "good guys" with conflicting goals, as well as multiple competing "bad guys" too, is a much more interesting narrative structure than the straight-up good vs. evil setup of several recent stories.
Hey everyone, long time lurker, first time poster....what does everyone think about it being Ral to contact Vraska and pickup the Immortal Sun? It would be a nice segway into ravnica 3 if jace got his memories back, now realizing bolas has two planeswalkers based on Ravnica on his payroll, so to speak.
Also, what are the odds Bolas sent vraska KNOWING ugin's involved (if he is)? Wouldnt be out of character to make a plan that furthers his long term plot and messes up ugin's?
What i'm really interested in is finding out how and why the Immortal Sun exists, i wonder if the people of Ixalan (world) created it out of fear of planeswalkers, or maybe it was created to trap an oldwalker?
Also, after reading too much Toky Ghoul (all hail the one eyed king) i feel like Vraska is going to die (in TG whenever a character is suddently given too much backstory, usually means that character is going to die soon)

This. in comic books, if a character is given a lot of backstory, it means he or she (or it) is going to be a featured character going forward.
As I've posted before, Vraska being part of the Gatewatch would fill a lot of roles in both the group dynamic and the story.
Vraska doesn't feel like the "take orders from Gideon" type. If she does do a complete face-turn, I think she'll be a back pocket ally like Tamiyo at best, rather than taking the Oath.

Depends if Vraska learn the full grasp of who Bolas is and how this story will end with Jace and her. I could see her joining since in general she agrees with the idea of the gatewatch and if she learns the full grasp of who Bolas is and what he's done I doubt she let him continue enslaving planes with how she now being written. Plus Tamiyo reason for not officially joining is she is not a fight and she doesn't like to "take a part in the story", while Vraska wants to do the opposite.
There is already tension since Gatewatch as a whole already has issues since both Jace and Gideon fought for control and Chandra and Liliana don't like to follow orders, as well as the fall out of the fight with Bolas.

Am I the only one who didn't care for either vampires in their PoV?
I mean it sounds as though Mavren got his entire crew needlessly killed when he broke the navigational equipment and crashed their ship...overzealousness is not one of white's better qualities.
I don't feel too sorry for his bloodfast victim though, I mean to murder a compatriot over a game of cards? That guy deserves to be Vampire-chum, although I do feel for the no-doubt traumatized guard who almost got killed if it were not for his armour.
And as many have noted, Vona seems pretty psychotic, I'd like to introduce her to a few Innistradi vampire-hunters...it'd probably take a dozen TBH.
I agree that parts seemed pretty forced, like why does Vraska need to tell Jace about Planeswalkers now? Her recharacterization is still a lil jarring to me but oh well.
And the alliance between Huatli and the merfolk shaman also felt a lil quick and convenient.
That being said I'm appreciative of the length of the stories, let the Dragon's Maze 2.0 begin!

I think she's telling him now because she realizes that whatever lies in Orazca is directly tied to planeswalkers. More than that as they get closer and closer to Orazca, they're nearing the end of her mission, which means being able to leave Ixalan, and that means that Jace would figure it out for himself soon enough.
It's one thing for her to tell him something she's been holding back thus far, it's another thing entirely to discover you've been lied to (by omission) the whole time. She's smart enough to know that Jace finding out on his own would just cause trouble for her.
I suppose that's fair.
With Jace's abilities, I'm sure I'd want to prepare any relationship to be at its best before he remembers that we were once enemies

This is one of those stories where I wonder if the different segments were written by different writers. Mavren's piece was enjoyable. Good usage of "show, don't tell" to establish his character while maintaining a proper pace in the telling of the story. Vona's piece on the other hand... good grief! Everything above the Dusk Legion Dreadnought picture was just one big info-dump that did nothing to advance the plot. Yes, it established her character. Yay. As Mavren's piece showed, there are better ways to do that.
Yes, I think you're exactly right with this. I hit that Vona section, and after about 2 sentences I was thinking, "Oh dear, show don't tell, Wizards, show don't tell." When pieces aren't really edited, we're pretty much just seeing the raw writing capability of whoever gets assigned a particular section, which obviously varies in quality a great deal.
Overall, I like this storyline--though I must admit I've always had a soft spot for Wacky Race type stories. So far we have a boat, a dino, and an elemental. I wonder what Angrath and Kumena will be riding.
(Any thoughts on who will end up being the Dick Dastardly?)
