Where did the idea come from that Ixalan traps planeswalkers? Just because of the flavor text on Angrath's Marauders?
The flavor text of Angrath's Marauders establishes that Angrath is unable to leave Ixalan.
In the story, 'In This Very Arena,' Ral Zarek relays to Jace that Project Lightning Bug (a planeswalker detector/tracker) had detected Vraska leaving Ravnica, but failed to detect a destination. Given Vraska's appearance in Ixalan, this would indicate that Ixalan possesses some trait that makes it undetectable to Project Lightning Bug.
Put two and two together, and it's a good possibility that Ixalan functions like a black hole for planeswalking, allowing planeswalkers and all the signals of their planeswalk in but preventing either from escaping once inside.
But at this point, there isn't anything official from Wizards on this point, correct? It's just conjecture among players?
I'm just curious because it seems like it's being discussed as though it's conclusively established already.
Nothing conclusive (since Wizards is still pretty hush hush on Ixalan), but it's not a particularly far leap.
Right now I'm wondering what the scope of the plane will be.
As of now, if you're a human and on Ixalan, you're either an inhabitant of the sun empire or you're a pirate. But there's no way absolutely every non-native/white person is a pirate in this world somehow. Also, the vampires having colonies implies that they've come from somewhere else. There has to be another continent on Ixalan somewhere that isn't filled with jungles and dinosaurs, a Europe equivalent essentially.
Yes, it's pretty much stated that pirates and vampires are recent invaders. Planes like Innistrad and Kamigawa are much vaster than what we see, but that would ruin the neat themes they have, so we never see any other facet of those worlds.
Dunno if mentioned yet, but the three suns of Ixalan apparently have other names, as seen in the flavortext. Might also be the deities they represent or are linked to. The "white" Wandering Sun is Kinjalli, the "red" Burning Sun is Tilonalli, and the "green" Verdant Sun is Ixalli.
Even Zendikar felt smaller in the return than the original did, with the story and cards mostly focusing on Sea Gate in Tazeem for example - yet we've both seen and know of Zendikar being far more vast than the return let on.

WotC has a hard on for suns recently don't they? Are sets suffering from solar creep? Are we going to get back to Dominaria only to find it has 3 extra stars all of the sudden? End the star creep! We want our planes to have one sun like in the good old days! Like Mirrodin!

To be fair, roughly half of Zendikar was inhospitable wastes by the time Battle started.

The Sun has been and continues to be central to everything we are and do.
I'd argue that it deserves more reverence and attention than mythical flying lizards.
Good podcast today! Some things I personally liked/found interesting;
Jace again has no memories and we will see him in his "natal" state without someone or something influencing him.
Alison says we won't see any other gatewatch here which put doubt in Ajani appearing but that phrase could be taken a few ways.
Ixalan is a continent in which the Sun Empire and the River Heralds are the natives. Based on the Aztec and Maya fighting for control, the River Healds have been around longer and used to control more power over Ixalan but now the Sun Empire is more in control. Merfolk here are based more on topical fish (hence the bright color scales and fins)
Vampires have cathedral-like ships and come from the east continent Torrezon which is control by both government and the church. A "mortal" aspect of them is that they only drink blood of the guilty. They are looking for something called the Immortal Sun which they believe was stolen from them and brought to Ixalan. The vampires took over Torrezon and the refugees and decent of the people who escaped from them became the pirates of today. The pirates also seek the Immortal Sun since they believe it can help them reclaim Torrezon.
This story is about a race between all the factions trying to get to the golden city first.

So Ixalan is the name of both the continent that's the focus of the plot and the plane that continent is on?
From the podcast;
Ixalan is one continent on a larger world. This story focuses on the actual continent itself of Ixalan.

EtheriumSage: Allison was very specific in that Ixalan is only a continent. This opens up a great deal of speculation. (E.g., are Ixalan and Torrezon (Torazon, to sound closer to Corazon?) just continents of Dominaria?) She never gave the name of the plane.
Judging by other points, either or both of Licia and Mathas from the Commander Vampire deck could be from this plane.
The Immortal Sun is an artifact stolen by people in Ixalan (unclear if it was the Sun Empire, Merfolk, or someone else) from the vampires/Torazon. It's pretty clear that the Immortal Sun is what everyone is racing for.
The Vampires want it to validate/complete their religion.
The Pirates want it to throw out the Vampires from Torazon.
The Sun Empire wants it to improve their empire.
The Merfolk want it to keep it from others. (This is less clear.)
(Conjecture) The PWs want it to get off of Ixalan. (It may be what is preventing the PWs from leaving.)
That makes Angrath's Marauders flavour text a bit weird though, since reading that would imply that Ixalan and the plane it's on have the same name. With this new information, maybe it's not the plane itself that Angrath can't leave, but just the continent.
I dont imagine that they're just a part of Dominaria since Vraska was said to have Planeswalkers to nowhere. While wevhave no evidence that Jace or Ral have been to Dominaria its a pretty well known plane it seems and wouldn't be called a void. Also I really hope not. The last thing we need is some ***** M. Night Shamalan "twist." IT WAS DOMINARIA ALL ALOOOOONG WWWOOOOO SPOOOOOOOPY! -__-
It is interesting that they haven't given us the name of the plane. Maybe it is Atlazan after all.

I think Ixalan will just be used as the short hand name for the plane.

That might cause some confusion, if that's the case.

No. Angrath is clearly using Ixalan as the name of the plane. It might be because the Immortal Sun is a literal PW black hole (meaning the closer you get to it the harder PW is) and so he showed up close to it and doesn't know anything else. It would be very interesting, BTW, if the WR PW aligned with the Empire of the Sun doesn't know they're a PW because of the effects of the Immortal Sun.
The flavor text, though, is unambiguous. 'If he can't leave Ixalan, he'll burn the plane down.' This construction and usage in English requires 'the plane' to be identified with 'Ixalan'.
And to be clear, I don't think Ixalan and Torazon are continents of Dominaria. Just pointing out that it's speculation that can happen. This 'Ixalan is the name of the continent' thing, though, is very... thought-provoking.

As usual, we'll have to wait and see where this is going. I also don't think this is Dominaria, and I'd be disappointed if they went that route. I wouldn't mind it being a plane we've already seen somewhere though, including the Planechase planes.
No, it’s really not. You will not see any of the Gatewatch other than Jace here.
Which means they'er very sloppy and missed that Ajani is part of the gatewatch, he isn't here, or are only talking about the first half. All seems equally likely, though it would be a bit of a stretch for the last one, players wouldn't like their cries of "you said no other gatewatch" to be met with "we meant only in this set, obviously there would be more gatewatch in the next set"

She is 100% just talking about Ixalan as a set. Wizards staff have done this a couple times, obfuscating details. It's not sloppy, did you really want her to spoil a plot twist from the next set when hyping the first set?
Looking at the big wallpaper of Admiral Beckett Brass....is the Admiral female?? The art looks more like a really badass pirate granny than anything else. And the chest region has certain curvature, to say the least.

So we actually don't know the name of this plane (if it even has one)? That's...new.
That's like having the story be dropped on Tazeem, call the set Tazeem, and we don't know what the actual plane of Zendikar is called.
It's nice to know that there are multiple continents here though; I figured there was a "Europe" that the vampires and pirates originated from.
I don't believe we know the name of the plane it is on. I suspect that it may be kept secret in order to be a surprise.
