One would assume Bolas wants Project Lightning Bug, or, at the very least, already has access to it given the ease with which he manages to track down planeswalkers.
Oh crap this just made the connection for me...Bolas wants to hunt down Planeswalkers feed their sparks into the immortal sun..then drain the sun of power to regain his old godlike power..
That sounds like a plan, but then why the lazotep army? To defend him while he's regaining his godhood?
I am guessing if he needs to go after Planeswalkers like Ob and Leshrac who had their own armies of minions, Even the OldWalkers had limits for how much they could do and fighting an entire plane as well as a Thousands of Years old Planeswalker at one time isn't exactly a great plan even for Lord Nicolas.
He also freed the eldrazi to see how a group of planes walkers might react to a planar-wide threat and he was glad for the gatewatch forming, a group of planeswalkers looking to bring together other walkers for the common good, since he think they could be useful tool in his plans.

So who won? Looks like Merfolk took the Sun and ran off with it, while Vampires conquered the land, Pirates took all the treasure, and Dinos are dead.
They are doing a "pick your own ending" adventure book thing where between geocaching and a future social media votes, one of the faction will win. Creative has written all four 4 ending and until we know who got the most "points" we won't know who takes the city.
I don't know if I've said this before, but think it would have been cool if they had us choose a faction for our DCI number and had us duke it out at FNM. The better you do on the tables the better your faction does. Fire Emblem Heroes does popularity polls this way (though it has no standing toward the game's story).

That is not an excuse for the absolute mishandling of the story, and handling the story properly would help sell cards.

Didn't they do something like this for Ravnica with the guilds? They had them ranked based on players wins. I don't think it had anything story related to it but it was interesting seeing each guild ranked, I think one guild(izzet?) led the majority of the time.
That was awsome, and if they did the same for the factions with the city at stakes it would have been cool too, but might have made people feel forced to go play when they don't want to or their voice won't be heard. Or that their voice won't be heard due to being too weak.

I think the problem with doing it this way is that it becomes less a matter of "Which faction is your favorite/the most popular" and more a matter of "which faction performs better in gameplay/is the most mechanically powerful."

I find it more likely that we're only getting 5 stories this time because they wrote 4 different endings and they didn't want to increase the creative team's total workload. So they wrote 8 stories (fairly standard), but we'll only ever see 5 of them.

UR and UW were the top two when they polled last time. If I remember correctly all the Ux guilds were highly rated. I believe it was based on what people liked rather than wins. But information like that is somewhat biased, it's known that more enfranchised players tend to lean toward blue and newer ones to Red and Green so that can always skew results of surveys.

My fellow Vorthi, This is the opportunity we've been waiting for!
This time we REALLY DO get to decide the fate of a Plane.
Let us get off of our computers and
W: Organize an adventuring party to collect emblems and advance your Faction.
U: Configure our navigation gadgets, solve the Geocache riddles, and locate the secret emblems of your Faction.
B: Sieze victory at any cost by locating and eliminating the emblems of your Rivals.
R: Run around like a madman, looking for emblems, entertaining spectators, and employing questionable shortcuts to arrive where your Faction (and heart) leads you.
G: Appreciate the world around you as you locate and place your Faction's emblems, all the while basking in nature and pondering the need for increased ecological responsibility.
Edit: Vampires are winning so far...

Edit: Vampires are winning so far...
Wow, yeah thus far Vampires are winning by a HUGE margin (double the 2nd place [Merfolk]). I realize this is far from final, but I'm honestly surprised that Vampires and Merfolk are in the lead (Go Merfolk, Go!). I'd have thought for sure that Dinosaurs would sweep it, but they're actually in last place atm.

Dinosaurs, or Sun Empire? That's an important distinction. If the option was to vote for dinosaurs, and the city would be effectively reclaimed by nature with wild dinosaurs roaming it, I'd vote for that in a heartbeat. Sun Empire, on the other hand, with their scheming emperor, and the weird martial code that Huatli follows? Definitely less appealing to me.
May this be the response to having showed the Sun Empire as a chivalrious knight-realm and the conquistadors as blood-suckers?
Some food for thought.
You mean completely mishandling the plot that was supposed to be "shades of grey" and showing the Dinosaur Knights as completely white washed with no actual greyness backfired? Color me Surprised.

Well, it simply says "Dinosaurs" but I'd assume that they meant "Sun Empire" by it in the same way that "Merfolk" means "River Heralds," "Pirates" means "Brazen Coalition" and "Vampires" means "Legion of Dusk."
Interesting note: I just checked that page again, and the number are completely different than they were yesterday, which one would assume to be the case since they should be gaining more miles as we go, except that the total for Vampires has gone DOWN from where it was last night/this morning. It was at 50.7k, this time it was at 48.9k. Pirates also gained nearly 20k miles in just over half a day, quintupling their total (which had been a shade under 6k).

How... accurate... is this thing supposed to be?
The reality is it's probably fixed to a certain degree to allow a more "tense" feeling race to the bitter end. Usually when these things are allowed to play out by themselves one team steams ahead and wins, but a lot of companies "fix" it to a certain degree(Steam team holiday events, Warframe invasions etc) and have it self correct at certain stages.
So now Bolas has the Eternal army, the Planar Bridge (in Tezzeret's arm) and the Immortal Sun.
I guess the final piece to this Rube Goldberg machine of a scheme is whatever it is Ral is working on for Bolas.
It would be rather funny if at the end of all this, Bolas gets defeated by another Karona like event (i.e. he gets betrayed). But then again, his mind magics might prevent all that. I just cannot imagine that 10-15 years from now we'll still have Bolas as the big bad behind the scenes...

I mean, I could see that, but if that's what they're doing they're failing at it. First place IS running away with it; nearly double as many miles(48.9k) as 2nd/3rd(both just over 25k) which themselves have five times as many miles as 4th place.
Changing topic... It has been a lot since the IXL story ended and I know that wednesday Rivals should start. Meanwhile, they had given us almost nothing (bar two issues of the Planeswalkers' Guide and Unstable story), not even a mere podcast. Do you think this was simply because they didn't have anything new to told us, or it was because their previous attempt at story podcast has been hasrhsly criticized (and with good reason, I must admit)? Do you think they'll try again to do some podcasts? For the care they put in them, frankly I can't say I really miss them.

Creative is understaffed at the moment and might be even tighter with what they can do now they possibly have to world build up to three brand new worlds a year.
Personally I felt the first round of podcast (which they had more time to prepare then the improving of the commander ones) where pretty decent.

It would be rather funny if at the end of all this, Bolas gets defeated by another Karona like event (i.e. he gets betrayed). But then again, his mind magics might prevent all that. I just cannot imagine that 10-15 years from now we'll still have Bolas as the big bad behind the scenes...
