Couldn't Chandra, Nissa, and Gideon be on planes that we haven't been to yet? Or at least planes they haven't been to yet? We had never heard of Ixalan and Jace had never been to Ixalan before, but that's where he ended up.
cause then we are going to spend the next year and a half playing the. "Where in the world is X planeswalker." game which is fun for Ixalan..but will get old real quick.
Agreed. I'm hoping Bolas gets treated more like Yawgmoth did, being an existential threat that spanned many, many blocks and required the heroes to carry out an equally long-term, complicated plan to defeat him.
None of this "whoops we just formed a team and locked Emrakul in the moon yay story's over" bull crap.
Actually, the Emrakul bit was cryptic enough to be rather interesting. The real problem was killing Ulamog and Kozilek, which, while it lead to some interesting potential consequences, was executed in a very lame way.

But that goes to the problem..of the Eldrazi in general. They were made to be unbeatable Beasties that are beyond even the old walkers which were unleashed on a plane that proved popular, there was zero way to have a storyline that made people happy, you either kill off the Eldrazi, they just vanish..or Zendikar gets nomed by Chaos Spiders.
We're already seeing it with Jace, and it's the most likely plot for Liliana. Three more would bring us into early 2019.
The issue is that Kaladesh was likely going to be this plotline for Chandra, but when it was switched around with Amonkhet that has obviously fizzled out. So I honestly don't know what plot they'd follow-up on her with.
They could have multiple members of the Gatewatch fleeing to the same plane. For instance, Chandra could end up on Regatha with Gideon following. Then we could finally address what the fuss is about regarding the Order of Heliud, or however it's spelled, while showcasing a new plane in the process.

That's the thing. Creative took the absurd, linear route and just killed them off. The Eldrazi all having been released into the multiverse as an ominous loose thread in the story would be haunting, and a cause for the Gatewatch to band. Which plane could be at risk next? How will the newfound Gatewatch approach this problem? Instead, the only adversaries for the Gatewatch now are... Ob Nixilis, Nicol Bolas, Dovin Bann (to an extent), Nahiri (to an extent)... so all Planeswalkers.
Again.
And before I get the "oh but they must! be able to travel planes to be multiverse threats" - The Eldrazi could. Except they made the catastrophic mistake of being you know, Legendary Creatures, instead of. You know.

Planeswalkers.
The problem with having the Eldrazi just...vanish means that you still lose out. When last we saw Zendikar the Eldrazi were destroying everything, we were told that is their purpose..if we go to Zendikar again and they just..poofed everyone just shrugs and is like. "Well that was anti-climactic, guess Zendikar is A-ok."
As I understood it, the physical manifestations of Kozilek and Ulamog where killed when they were "trapped" on the plane by the leylines. Since the origins or any biological cycle of the Eldrazi is still unknown, nothing is keeping them from respawning right? Irrespective of whether that would be an enjoyable twist in the story or not, so far there is nothing to my knowledge that makes this impossible. Perhaps there are more Eldrazi beings in the multiverse, and manifesting as three titans in doing three different things is just how Eldrazi's do their thing.

Well they could have still had a Battle for Zendikar the outcome of which would just be driving the Eldrazi away. Then the Oath of the Gatewatch would even have a more immediate goal of trying to defend planes against the Eldrazi. And you could still have basically the same story progression we have now and just assume the Eldrazi are on an unknown plane currently

The way I explain it is..that the Hand and pond thing..was just a bit off, at least with the Eldrazi.
As opposed to a hand and a pond..The Eldrazi are sorta like..Cthulhluoid Spiders, they stick their fangs (the Titans) into a plane and inject poison to digest the mana from within, what happens with Bonds of Mortality and Fall of the Titans is the Gatewatch grabbing onto those fangs..and dumping a gigantic fireball straight into the Spider's mouth.
Apparently (IIRC) Emrakul was always supposed to show up on Innistrad, so as popular as Innistrad was, it (if that's the case) was always doomed to its fate. So I guess by extension, Emrakul was meant to be an ever-present threat that the protagonists have to deal with in the long run.
I'm still wondering if Nissa's connection to Emrakul will be significant or not later, but that's not relevant now.

Funny, it was only after the hand in the pond analogy that I understood what they were meant to represent. And going by Cthuloid spiders as a term, maybe Ulamog and Kozilek were the fangs of one spider that is now wounded (will it heal eventually or die of hunger?) and Emrakul a fang of another spider that left?

5) What plane is Angrath originally from, and why did he travel to Ixalan?
"Angrath was a family man on a plane we haven't been to yet. He has two adorable daughters, and whenever he wasn't at work as a blacksmith he would travel the Multiverse to bring them back presents. He went away on a weekend holiday years ago and ended up on Ixalan, and when he tried to return home he could not."
Ok, Angrath is now adorable, and I think my favorite planeswalker. Newest member of the Story Circle, it looks like.
I can understand his utter rage at trying to get home. He goes away for the weekend, thinking he's going to see his daughters in just a few days. Then he gets stuck on this backwoods Jurassic world, missing YEARS of his daughters' lives. I would be royally pissed, too.
Also, this is VERY relevant:
4) Why did Nicol Bolas choose Vraska, a city-dwelling assassin, to lead his expedition into the wilds of Ixalan? Is it because of her connection to Jace, or is his presence there just a coincidence?
Magic Story Team: Nicol Bolas is an expert planner, and one of the best aspects of being an expert project manager is recognizing the potential in your employees. Nicol Bolas sees in Vraska a Planeswalker with lofty ambitions and the people skills to back them up. He sees the kind of leader she can become, so he offers her the one thing she wants most in the world: a path to salvation for the downtrodden in her guild. But that's only part of the answer. There's definitely more there.
Jace's presence here is entirely accidental. Nicol Bolas has no clue Jace ended up on Ixalan. [emphasis added]

Oh.
Oh no. ;-;
Okay this def explains his attitude and almost pup like manner of wanting Huatli help.
Just things I found interesting;
-Bolas has something more planned with Vraska.
-Jace being on Ixalan was by chance and Bolas did not send him there.
-There is more to origins of vampirism
-Saint Elenda is alive and unaware what the vampires have been up too
-The winged beast that took the immortal sun is the last guardian who interested the merfolk with hiding it. It seems the Sun Empire know it by another name and another story. We also see Huatli has a banner with a feathered creature on it.

So Elenda is totally a planeswalker, yeah? She's alive but hasn't been on Ixalan or Torrezon for at least a couple hundred years, and was Vampire Patient Zero under semi-mysterious circumstances. If she is 9 feet tall like Mavren claims, maybe she's from the same plane as Vish Kal?
Poor, poor Angrath...of all the Planeswalker backstories his may be the most heartbreaking. Hopefully Hautli quits being mean and actually helps him get home to his daughters.
I wonder if the "Winged Guardian" was Ugin, doing Ugin things a millenia ago.

I apprecieate that we got some lore tidbits while story is on a break.
A lot of things suddenly make sense about Angrath. I would want to burn the place down as well if it prevented me from seeing my kids.
And I'm glad that he's not just a "murder monster" like Huatli thinks. He wants to get back to his family and he is gonna do anything it takes. He screams rakdos more than ever now but he has actual depth, much like Dovin is azorious but has an actual personality. The creative team has been killing it with non-human walkers.

In general I think creative has been better about showing more sides to the colors. Creativity and more positive emotions have been shown in red with Kaladesh, more self pride and overall positive takes of black shown with Yehenni and Drana, Vraska being a making sense as a "justice warrior" in black/green (and not white) and as they even pointed out with Jace, showing blues idea of making your own destiny and not letting your past define you (and Kaladesh showing how blue can be more "warm" characters). Angrath now fixes the issue of always evil black/red characters, we just need a good blue/black character (which is very easy with a Sherlock Holms like character).

I wouldn't rush to determine whether Angrath is R or BR, we still don't know anything about his family, plane and the Minotaur culture there (if there is one), for all we know the Minotaurs on his plane are essentially Kolaghans that care for their brood/species only. Although the description really has me wanting to eventually see a planeswalker card named "Angrath, Family Man" featuring Angrath smiling with his family...
The Bolas (and Immortal Sun) portions of the Q&A were pretty vague as usual, except for the part where he didn't send Jace to Ixalan, so while conflict will happen when Jace remembers things, I think fate still screwed Bolas in the long run.
As for Elenda, I think I'm still going to continue dreaming that she was related to Night's Reach, if not Night's Reach herself. Night's Reach was fascinated with the different ways mana flows and functions on different planes and I won't be surprised the least bit that she created a legion of Vampires somehow in the process.

See, this is the thing that Wizards needs to do more often. Angrath is now the most compelling character in the entire set, and yes I 100% would want Ixalan to burn down if I were in his shoes, imagine how long he might have been gone, his Kids could be grown for all we know.
Edit : Someone get Nahiri and free Emrakul, Ixalan needs to get nomed, that or bring the Phyrexians in.
Sounds like his "natural state" is more mono R to me honestly. An emotional but caring father figure.
He might be (B/R) right now but that would be mostly frustration. I doubt he'd still be in "kill-everyone-in-my-way" mood if he can leave this *****ty place.
... if his eventual family reunion goes well that is.
I'm not sure if his past is a good bonding point with Huatli though.
She doesn't seem to care about family values that much from what we've seen from her so far.
Angrath could be a person who only cares for his family and nothing else, no one else.
"Captain Angrath cares less about treasure than mayhem. If he can't leave Ixalan, he'll burn the plane down."
Although him being a smith indicate certain level of self-control, even if he mainly makes weapon. I do love some good people and bad people in every color combination possible, Angrath may be the first important Rakdos we see with positive traits.
