So Runo was in Wizards after all… which we anticipated but did not get. Why didn't he make it? Why do I get the sick feeling that he ended up being Kess. Think about it. She's a Grixis Wizard with flying. Take her exact card and make her Vampire Wizard instead, and she'd be Runo Stormkirk. With the flashback effect not only reminiscent of Innistrad, but emphasizing Runo's Blue side, and the concept of depths as recurring spells (Pull From the Deep).
Not sure what I was expecting after hearing about the quality of the other podcasts but I do feel like I could have spent 20 minutes listening to something else and checked out the transcript instead.
The Ajani tidbits were nice. They acknowledged that they dicked Mirri over twice. I wasn't happy with the description of the reprints but I wasn't expecting much. I'm probably reaching when I dwell on the "was Kha Regent" Freudian slip but I'm hungry for info to feed my pessimistic mind and if what happened to Mirri is any indication, things don't look good if you're a leonin and female. Also,
How are you gonna mention Raksha's abs but not Kemba's? C'mon son. Somebody in the company approved that art. Don't ignore that girth. Apparently metal abs runs in the bloodline though. Also didn't know they were related. It wasn't mentioned in the 5 lines of text I found for her.
Can't wait for all that Ixalan goodness next week though.

This article is 10x more interesting and fun to have than the podcast that also came out today. Love that they did this!
I think it's ironic that they reference the Sengirs with Baron's Pridemate and the 'Van Sengirsing, Bounty Hunter,' but never considered a new Baron Sengir (or at least didn't put it into today's article). Which is frustrating when Vamps only got two alternate legends, who are brand new, while the other tribes got at least three new legends. A mono-black or black with either white or red legend would have been appreciated. They even had Runo down as a crossover vampire wizard, which would open up more Grixis/UB Vamps, but apparently pulled him for a brand new character instead.

Yeah, Kess was probably Runo at some point in the design process.
Of course, if that's the case, I hope that his actual card (if he ever gets it) won't be inferior to Kess.

I personally think it's more likely that Marsil was the replacement for Runo. Marsil is notably not on the list of new cards, while someone named "lichmaker" (a reference to Dranlu, lich lord?) already is. At a guess, they'd singled out that they wanted wizards to have at least one older character, but may have had difficulty coming up with a flavorful version of him. So I think it was more of a decision between a bad Runo or an amazing Marsil, at which point I'm pretty happy they picked Marsil.
So, since the development name for Mathas, Fiend Seeker was apparently "Van Sengirsing, Bounty Hunter," what do we think the chances are that Mathas is from Ulgrotha, and the vampires he's branding are Sengir Vampires? His appearance, clothing and background don't seem to preclude this possibility.

When they reveled the planes the legendary creatures are from, all known ones came from already know planes. I think if they wanted to say Mathas is from Ulgrotha I think would have been reveled.

While that is true, it would be nice to have a bone thrown to people who like Ulgrotha.

I mean, nothing about Kess's card screams 'Vampire Lord who worships sea gods' to me.
Slapping existing character names on random cards is a recipe for disaster, and Kess is a solid card. All this means is that Runo is saved for a more appropriate card design in the future.

I think he's meant to be generic. Someone pointed out to me that he doesn't really work in the context of planes where vampires are in control.

I imagine Runo's actual card having a Convoke-like ability, personally.
Interesting point about Bloodline Necromancer. Beyond Ulgrotha though, I do think they need to start throwing in more creatures from more obscure planes just to mix it up. I'm talking about planes like Segovia, Muraganda, Kaldheim, Mercadia, Iquatana and Equilor, all of which have appeared in the lore before.
I'm reading the blurbs in the commander product for the first time. I didn't realize they were all online already. The cat's pamphlet mentions Raksha fighting the phyrexians but he fought Memnarch (who isn't phyrexian). I don't think I've found any info about Kemba being related to Raksha back then but that's a mildly-interesting bit of trivia.
Didn't realize that Balan is female. The art makes more sense now. Her pumpkin-head fur isn't actually a mane, it's just messy. Also, she's 100% the cat-version of Link. The blurb feels like a description of someone's Khajit character from Skyrim lol

I'm no Mirrodin expert but wasn't Memnarch corrupted by the glistening oil which made him go mad?

I especially would love to see Iquatana. Equilor too.
I got my O-Kagachi copy last night. Bought it off a Modern player. My friend has one he was going to give me as well. So I have my Kamigawa Story Deck Commander, and another copy just to have because who knows when I'll want to make 5c? I'm thinking of also getting the Dragon deck and playing it out of the box as it is - although our LGS is only selling the decks as a set of 4, so I will have to get it elsewhere.
He's gorgeous and the foils this year look a lot better than last year. Last year's had fading ink and stuff, looking like they were left out in the sun? This year they're looking sharp. O-Kagachi in all his splendor! I just need a Miren, the Moaning Well for the deck to be finished. Miren never appears in the books, but it depicts the Takenuma Swamp in its background so I want to include it. Regardless, I am beyond thrilled to have a 5c O-Kagachi and have the art at dusk, which is how I imagined the final battle took place.

I figure what that meant was that he spent his life training to fight the Nim/against the Mephidross, which were basically Phyrexians. They just didn't know what that meant, yet. Or they're just simplifying things for people who are only giving it a casual look.
Anyone mind uploading O-Kagachi's blurb? I don't want to wait to get the deck to read it My LGS is kinda lame selling them as 4 or nothing to avoid unpopular ones being left on shelves.
O-Kagachi, an immense dragon with eyes that blaze like the stars, was teh greatest of Kamigawa's guardian spirits, the kami. But when the veil betwee nthe spirit and material worlds was weakned, O-Kagachi's divinity was stolen by Lord Konda. Thus began the twenty-year Kami War.

As for Ulgrotha, we got a Sengir vamp in Bloodline Necromancer!

The phyrexian oil started Memnarch's madness, the blinkmoth serum made it worse. Memnarch isn't phyrexian in any case.
