"If a person's profile includes anime or My Little Pony, feel free to ignore everything they say."
Of course most characters will be fit. There is a lot of conflict and demand to be on the move. Many are warriors or engaged in battle.
This may seem harsh but I see no need to represent obesity in a positive light. It's unhealthy and a medical condition with serious consequences.
As someone who's actually very overweight, I agree. Its not something you glamorize- and lets be honest, the vast majority of people don't want to see it glamorized. Fat people just aren't marketable.
And its kinda hard to run around fighting eldrazi/vampires/Consulate forces when simply running up a couple flights of stairs leaves you out of breath. Anyone in that situation would either get fit fairly quickly due to all the activity, or end up dead because they're up against a quicker opponent they can't possibly keep up with.
Karlov is positive? He is a decadant and corrupt ghost.
He's pretty good in edh though...
Why does it matter whether or not people are obese in magic? Most people are warriors and have no choice but to be fit.

I haven't paid much attention to chubby people on Magic cards for years so I just know some of the older cards. Back in the day, Daughter of Autumn got a lot of attention from the kids because she looked an awful lot like a teacher we had. She was just um... big.
Joven qualifies as beefy I guess. Not sure if he's positive.
I admit it would be nice to portray overweight characters more often. It would show a bigger slice of the populous. You would think green rife with cards that encourage "plenty" would have a few characters that enjoy "excess". Even if it a machine ala Tik-Tok
i agree that the soldiers etc would need to be fit. but there are still priests, healers, wealthy ravnicans, inventors and scientists .. maybe even pyromages and necromancers do not need to be fit.
but i mainly see either muscular, or fit-and-trim. there are a lot of other body types out there -- not just very obese or even obese, but also healthy body types such as husky, muscle-with-a-few-extra-pounds, etc; that is, there are people who /naturally/ are big (ie big and healthy) whose genetics would /never/ allow them to have a thin body.
also, there are associations and positive stereotypes (bigger people as being generous, warm, giving, caring) that i think would make evocative characters.
and admittedly, i'm attracted physically to husky and bigger guys so, yeah, it would be nice to see some eye candy for me on card art Joven is a start, i suppose
but in general, i think the more diversity that is shown, the more relatable the world feels to me, and the more rich/complex/interesting the world feels to me. i think diversity helps me feel that a world is broad and complex, so characters then feel more complex -- more complexly human, less caricature.
Somebody almost demanded this of the creative team some time ago during an event. Conference or something? I think it was the Kaladesh Pro Tour but don't quote me on that.
Regardless, now that it was made known in public to the team it's just a matter of time.

RIP Magic Duels. Wizards will regret what they did to you.
Bruse is not as "fit" looking as other characters, but he does have muscle definition from being a herder. I don't think we will see fat/obese (i.e. no muscle definition, big belly, etc.) characters as positive role models in this particular story universe.
Unlocked, with a caveat:
The fatty pun has been made, please don't make it again.
Do not denigrate overweight people. Acknowledging it's not incredibly healthy is fine, but weight and obesity are very complicated subjects.
Here is the thing. Coming from a relatively fit male.
Your perception of the healthiness/attractiveness/etc of overweight people doesn't matter. This issue is not about "promoting obesity", it is about the fact that representation in media has always mattered and not adding to the very real self loathing that many overweight people already deal with due to self image and society as a whole. In short, I'm saying that your personal hang ups or what have you about overweight people is second fiddle to the positive impact of positive characters who represent them. Contrary to what you may believe, one can not hate themselves and still want to make changes to their life or their image. Frankly, you should likely keep your nose out of the lives of others anyhow.
The "but action heroes!" excuse doesn't fly here. This is Magic. The multiverse is full of wizards and sorcerers of all kinds. You know, wizards. Many of whom are likely scholars, an archetype that isn't known for its physical fitness despite the supermodel poster children of this game. Anyone can wield magic and because of Magic anyone can be formidible. If it seems more ridiculous to you that someone with a few pounds on them can toss a fireball than it does that we have literal sacs of bones and frail old men casting spells then maybe you should re-evaluate your mindset.

Most cards are kind of negative air. Rohgahh of Kher Keep has a nasty air about it and Shelkin Brownie has wonky art for the ability.
