First of all, look at detective Nissa putting in some WORK. Poor Jace spent weeks on Innistrad putzing around, and Nissa figures out half of Amonkhet in an hour and a half on the second day. No wonder she's getting her Simic on in this set.
Second of all- I'm really intrigued about Oketra. She seems by and large benevolent, but Nissa mentions that the world is dying and just feels Oketra's fear. Is she afraid because she's scared for herself and her followers on what happens when the Hours start? Or is she afraid that Nissa knows, and might reveal the truth? Either way, whatever Oketra's motives are now, its clear she's also afflicted with amnesia, and thus has no idea of what happened "before".
As far as Gideon goes, remember, the guy grew up in Theros- a very faith-based society, and was basically trained by Hixus to concern himself with the greater good- which requires solidarity, which is Oketra's wheelhouse, so its pretty obvious why he's immediately drawn to her. His main character motivations are that he 1. Fears for his friends safety, given what happened with Erebros, and 2. Wants desperately to be part of something bigger than himself. That's why he was the Order, until he couldn't reconcile their methods with his belief. Why he joined the Boros. Why he immediately latched on with the Zendikari resistance, and why he joined the Gatewatch. Seeing the supposed living embodiment of that sentiment before him obviously makes him believe in her.
To what I think happens next:
First, and I think this might be next week- SOMETHING happens during one of Gideon's trials that completely pulls the wool off. Sounds like one initiate murders another to get ahead, and it turns out this is common and encouraged, because only the best can be the chosen. Heck, it may even be one per crop, considering it looks like there's gladatorial style combat in some card art. Either way, there definitely seems like a nefarious, cutthroat elements in play here that Gids can't abide by.
Whatever happens, it COMPLETELY flips Gideon on the gods (even Oketra?), given his quote on Anointed Procession. Combined with Chandra's already open disdain for them, spurs them into another revolt, this time against the gods, the state relgion, and the over all state of the society. And all this is going to go down merely days- or even hours- before their Elder Dragon God comes back to oversee the apocalypse, which probably results in the demise of the plane.
So yeah, the odds of this one ending well is getting to be pretty slim.
Also, this ties back really nicely with Kaladesh, as we now see WHY Tezzeret was so impatient. If Amonkhet's about to go down the tubes, its reasonable to assume that Tezz wanted the planar bridge- to get the Chosen form Amonkhet off the plane and to wherever Bolas hopes to use them. The timeline here is really tight. From the end of the Inventors Fair (when Rashmi is "hired" to work on the bridge) to when she escapes the Spire is just a bit over a month. Maybe another couple of weeks spent working with the Renegades to get the Heart of Kiran to work, and maybe another week or so for the actual battles in the rebellion (Jace/Kari Zev's skyship run, the attack on the turrets, Liliana vs. Tezzeret, and the Hope's kamikaze attack all were within a day- if that. After that a week or two for peace negotiations, the mop-up, Yahenni's Penultimate Party, final goodbyes, and then off to Amonkhet, where they arrive three days before the Hours are set to begin.
Add that all up, and Tezzeret and Bolas had just about two months to take Rashmi's Bridge, get her to alter it to suit their needs, transport it to Amonkhet (by the way of wherever, because neither's actually on Amonkhet right now- which means they may have needed to do additonal things). That's not a lot of time to implement a multiverse warping invention to effective capacity, and that's WITHOUT there being any setbacks, of which they obviously suffered a few. So pretty much everyone in this story is going to be cutting things VERY close.
I miss the days when Chandra and Gids were the couple from the times of Purifying Fire. Though, iirc she had some admiring of Gideon muscles in last block so maybe she just wants the love wherever she can get it.
She said in the last block's story that Gideon had previously made her feel tingly (or something like that), but now he just makes her feel "safe." Gideon is clearly into her, she's clearly into Nissa, and Nissa is clearly into...dying world-souls?
For 1 animism is a pretty well-known thing and super Green. I'm... failing to see the issue really.
For 2 Bolas did get a massive power boost from Alara. He could destroy Alara, why is corrupting Amonkhet such a problem.
3 I think is just one of those roll with it things. Less realistic but most people aren't interested in a story on outsider drama with every plane they visit. At least here they have the Gods vouching for them somewhat.
Also, I like how all these guys are training their entire life for these trials, Gids shows up, doesn't even get any sleep, and knocks one trial out before breakfast, and decideds to go for a second before lunch.
First of all, look at detective Nissa putting in some WORK. Poor Jace spent weeks on Innistrad putzing around, and Nissa figures out half of Amonkhet in an hour and a half on the second day. No wonder she's getting her Simic on in this set.
To be fair, Jace didn't have Innistrad talking to him to help figure it out.
their Elder Dragon God comes back to oversee the apocalypse, which probably results in the demise of the plane.
I think Bolas' plan is to return to the plane, harvest those who passed his trials as leaders of his army, and then to destroy everyone else so that they can be his zombie army that will march from plane to plane via the Planar Bridge. Is that what you mean by "demise of the plane"?
Regardless, I agree with you on the super convenient nature of the timing that is Bolas' apparently-scheduled return to Amonkhet and the creation of the Planar Bridge. It's nice to have that sort of fortune befall your plans.
What exactly is the sigificance of the number 8? 8 feels like a weird number in a magic context, especially considering the existing gods being 5 mono colored. I wonder if theres any reason or if its just arbitrary or tying into somethig besides colors. I also wonder how they were forgotten-- do they work like Theros gods and die off when they are no longer worshipped, or were they outright killed or maybe mummified or otherwise incapacitated, tying into their more physical nature than the Theros gods?
Like a lot of people, Im dying to know what all this means. Some really great puzzle pieces being weaved together here, like rhe significance of the young or the silent sphinxes that all build towards the reveal.
I don't think it's anything more than the casting cost of Bolas. maybe his ultimate will care about it instead of 7 from last time

Project Booster Fun makes it less fun to open a booster.
I think Bolas' plan is to return to the plane, harvest those who passed his trials as leaders of his army, and then to destroy everyone else so that they can be his zombie army that will march from plane to plane via the Planar Bridge. Is that what you mean by "demise of the plane"?
I think it goes beyond that. Nissa said outright that the world itself was "killed" decades ago (probably when Bolas took over), and that its in its death throes- its VERY late death throes. Meanwhile, that whole Hours thing- which is basically the apocalypse- is two days away. I think the two might be connected here.
I think Amonkhet is about to go the way of Serra's Realm here, and whether or not Bolas set it up or just knew it was going to happen, he's using it to his advantage.
For 2 Bolas did get a massive power boost from Alara. He could destroy Alara, why is corrupting Amonkhet such a problem.
One problem with that theory. Ajani fought Nicol Bolas in the Maelstrom in 4603, which is stated to be a post-mending event. We are either still in 4608 or 4609.
Knowing our own history, it's a very common practice to kill all the elders, burn the books, and rewrite a culture's history so it could be of use to the conquerers. Nazi Germany kidnapped Jewish children who look closer to Arian and gave them to childless couples, the U.S. had a program kidnapping Native American children and "reeducate" them to Western culture, China had a notorious Cultural Revolution that destroyed countless relics and scholars who remembered the time before Chairman Mao, who decorated himself as the Red Sun, examples are numerous.
Nico Bolas probably killed all the elders, and instead of being kept in sacred tombs they were manipulated to labor for the younger generation. The Gods were reduced and brainwashed to trainers for Bolas' eventual plan. Bolas always has a niche for using the least amount of force to achieve greatest benefit, so it suits him to corrupt a plane instead of creating one. Not suggesting he couldn't prior to Mending, if Serra could, so could he.
My only question is: Why the hell did Bolas keep the old markings of history of Amonkhet, it's just... careless? How unlike him to make that mistake, but the Gatewatch needs more plot armor I guess. THAT, or he's just not as good as being a tyrant as Earth's forefathers.

I concur with the methods how he took it over. Its just head scratching as it is quite bizarre how a dragon that is basically the literal embodiment of the term Xanatos Gambit would leave evidence in his wake of misdeeds that would foil his plans.
While this sentiment is true we don't have a concrete date for when Bolas devoured the maelstrom, it definitely should have been after what ever he did to Amonket, which was decades ago. The main problem with placing Alara on the timeline is we don't know how long Vol stayed in the Eye before Chandra came, it was only explained as "many rat-years".
Ah, that's right, thanks. Chandra is very obviously full of emotion, so her being full of love can make sense. I've never really been a fan of ships, typically cuz they feel forced just for representation's sake. But if nothing else, they definitely seem to being slowly but consistently developing this as part of Chandra's character.
I'm curious to how Jace is going to respond to the information about the history as well as Gideon's participation in the trials. We might see some shaky gatewatch interaction coming soon.
Today's story was surprisingly good. Nissa and Chandra actually didn't feel like simple cardboard cutouts this time! I also liked the worldbuilding with the revelation of the eight gods and Nissa's short exchange with Oketra, although it really seems a bit careless of Bolas to leaves all that evidence around.
I agree with some of the criticism here though. Nissa talking with the plane was ... kinda funny. Maybe that's what she's always done. But when I hear that someone can "converse with the soul of a world", I imagine something more complex and strange than a disembodied voice talking more or less like and other person would.
I'd also appreciate it if the denizens of Amonkhet were a little more suspicious of the Gatewatch members. Sure, maybe everyone knows that they are visitors at this point. But they still should raise some eyebrows, considering how rare people (that aren't undead/cursed/whatever) coming from outside the barrier seem to be.

Him eating the Maelstrom and then battling and losing to Ajani happened in the same day.

That put me off, too, but then we started seeing how brainwashed the gods feel, and I got the impression that maybe things are just so off here that visitors might not be much of a thing. The zombies don't give two craps about who they're serving, the gods are barely the semblance of a sentient being, and the citizens are 110% focused on training.

Yes...but we don't know when that happened, There is no verified source for the year you gave. I said the time line of, Amonket becomes corrupted--->Bolas eats mealstrom, is fine. But we don't have exact dates, we only have established dates for the last three years in story.
Amonkhet being a planeswalker factory almost makes it like the matrix: an uninhabitle world with a small habitable pocket where the people live. Once every X years the safe haven is broken down, the people killed, and the cycle starts anew. Bolas is the architect, Oketra the Oracle? Liliana is agent Smith: working for Bolas still, because of her pact, but grown outside of his control because of the power the chan veil gives her. All we need is for Gideon to go Super Saiyan on Liliana for Bolas in exchange for him not destroying the Hekma at the end of the story, and the analogy is complete.
Only remaining question is where is the white rabbit?
Taimyo???
I'm also getting this matrix vibe. This story really caught my interest...

I don't think it's really that unexpected, I don't think he's necessarily being sloppy. First of all, what does he really have to fear? What are people going to do with the knowledge that the plane was corrupted, instead of created by him? We don't even really know his end goal at this point, it could be completely irrelevant information as far as he is concerned. This revelation doesn't change the gatewatch's plans in any way; they were already committed to opposing him. Maybe they will try to coerce the gods instead of outright destroying them; that may or may not have an impact on Bolas' endgame.
Second, he could just not view the gatewatch, or other planeswalkers in general, as that large of a thread. I feel like arrogance fits in to Bolas' personality on some level.
How does she know his name?
How often does Bolas come back? How long is the second sun cycle?
Is this the first or fiftieth version of Amonkhet?
Are the outlands ruins just prior incarnations?
Are there older people on Amonkhet?
Where is Razaketh?
Does Bolas just show up like every fifty years or whatever to check up on the plane? Eat the energy take the worthy destroy everything and restart again?
Just questions I have
And spoiler: The entire plane is built on lies.
Well I was hoping for some feedback on this post, but it seems today's story answered some of these questions and my predictions are on track

Well the only unknowable event, at the moment, is when the events of Lorwyn took place as it is specifically post-mending. Also of when Nissa visited Lorwyn while it was still on a day/night schedule.
The events of Oath of the Gatewatch, Eldritch Moon, Aether Revolt and now Amonkhet have taken place within the same year for the characters. In fact I think their oaths they took on Zendikar are not even five months old. Like they literally they spent a month after the events of Eldritch Moon recouping at Jace's place in Ravnica. After that they head over to Kaladesh, stay 22-24ish days there. Then immediately they leave to Amonkhet shortly after Ajani planeswalked to who knows where.

Yes, I said we have a confirmed timeline for the last three, in story, years. My point again is Alara, which we don't have a specific year. It isn't a significant thing but I don't like unconfirmed information being thrown around as fact, and the year you gave for the events of Alara is unconfirmed.
So they just edited out the very obvious romantically inclined question Chandra asked to Nissa with no comment.
That's honestly a pretty gross action and reeks of WOTC being afraid of people in the community like those crazy "cultural marxism"/"gay propaganda" conspiracy theorists. Choose your side WOTC. Either you fully accept people in the LGBTQ community and believe they deserve the spotlight just as much as everyone else or you don't. You can't just keep keep making token background LGBT characters for brownie points and act like that's progress. Actively censoring an author to take LGBT themes out is the opposite of progress and shows that you really do just want to keep sprinkling out token characters to keep heat off yourself in place of actually giving a care.
