Unlikely to be a planeswalker factory.
Keep in mind that Nicol Bolas is an elder dragon. He comes from a race which had waged war on itself to near extinction, with Nicol Bolas being the last remaining elder dragon. Since Amonketh was created before the Mending, the planeswalkers who would ascend there would be as powerful as the oldwalkers, and it would be extremely out of character for Bolas to start creating those with power to potentially try to usurp him. Elder dragons don't share power and they don't play nice with others.
From what I remember reading up, the Mending affected all planeswalkers on all planes. I might remember it incorrectly, do you have a source for that information?
It doesn't seem very plausible that he would create competition, that right. But he is known to use planeswalkers as agents, I would just assume the ones from the home plane would be easier to control, especially after the indoctrination of the plane's culture.
The Mending did affected the nature of the spark the same way for every planeswalker but it did not take away their inherit powers. Bolas still has all attributes and advantages that come with being an elder dragon, just as Sorin had remained a vampire and Ugin had remained a dragon. All planeswalkers were affected but it was only the power of the spark that was weakened.
Regarding those who ascend on Amonketh, I was talking about the possibility of them ascending pre Mending. That would be a problem for Bolas.
Ah, yeah now I get it.
It's not yet clear though if it's been like that from the begining of the plane. I mean, he could have just changed the ethics of the plane and with that its purpose, most likely through the gods as his proxies, throughout the centuries. It's probably not a young plane.
Amonkhet was apparently deliberately designed to be sunny. Someone tell that to that guy who doesn't want overcast weather.
That was Tiro of Meletis (Formerly Jenrik)... and not to be "that guy" or anything, but while they may say they designed the world to be bright and sunny, looking at all the cards and art spoiled thus far reveals that there's virtually none where it's not at minimum partly cloudy, and a notable majority with heavy cloud cover. None of this bothers me in the slightest, but I'm a pedantic ass, so there's that.
I'm starting to wonder if Amonkhet's trials aren't just to produce Planeswalkers but an army of fierce and loyal warriors. It feels to me like Bolas is preparing for something and that the Planar Bridge might tie into this. Come with me on this journey....
Bolas knows that a threat is upcoming that he has to deal with. Bolas, not being one to get his own hands dirty when others will do and also one to love long-term schemes, creates an artificial plane from which he can grow and train an army that is willing to fight and die for him.
We know that Tezzeret stole the Planar Bridge from Kaladesh and took it to Amonkhet for Bolas.
Now, why would someone who can already planeswalk need or want an object that already does something that he can do? Simple, to transport others such as an army that he has been cultivating for many years.
I am willing to bet that Nicol Bolas is actually going to be dealing with another enemy (I'm hoping Phyrexians.) that poses a real threat to the multiverse and the Gatewatch interferes without knowing all the details and makes things worse for everyone.
I've got to say that I honestly don't think Bolas' plans for this block will have anything to do with the Planar Bridge. Bolas is a long term thinker/planner, but the invention of the Planar Bridge was really just a happy accident. There's no way that he'd have set any sort of plans into motion that REQUIRE the existence of a device that no one's even invented yet, and may not be created by time he needs/wants it.
I really feel that the Planar Bridge is a seed for a future plot line, not a part of the current one.
It would be amusing to see Gideon's superman instinct come back to bite him here. Imagine him jumping in front of the bident for that guy, only to be stabbed in the back as the sacrifice mourns his ruined opportunity to join the Worthy. Kind of like a darker version of that scene from Incredibles.
This whole block heavily reminds me of Fury Road as well. Witness me, Immortan Bolas!
Also, no Bolas on Amonkhet... right now. That means his card's not in the set, but is in Hour of Devastation, which is going to be about him wrecking everyone's day.
First of all, thank you Wizards, for realizing where James Wyatt is best used, and it sure as hell isn't climactic battles.
Second, I think you really gotta feel for Gids. I mean, the poor guy's just had his faith in the gods restored, only he's about to discover that this place is just one very ****ed up death cult where people pretty much train to pretty much earn the "honor" of being ceremoniously executed. All for the glory of Nicol Bolas. Think the truth's gonna be pretty devastating, even if he learns to accept it.
It'll be interesting to see what happens when the others meet their colors' gods as well. Interesting note- Nissa was terrified of snakes in her earlier appearances, and the green god's a cobra. That could lead to a very awkward scenario.

And yeah, Gideon is going to have an extra dose of PTSD on top of what he already has soon enough.
Gids is clearly sipp'in the Kool-Aid.
It may be that the other Gatewatch members meet their corresponding god and feel the same thing. I'm getting Stargate "Seth/Set" vibes.
I do like that art of the gatewatch walking through that barrier they erected in the newest article. Too bad it's most likely going to be another entry in my Arts you liked on cards you didn't thread.
Also, is it me or does it look like the art in the same article by Florian de Gesincourt (This one) depects mummies building skyscrapers?
Honestly, it looks more like the kind of art commissioned just for the story. I don't think it's gonna be on a card.
I like today's story, had a good feel to it and hit some good points. I like how it does acknowledge the smaller size of the Amonkhet gods. One thing that came to mind when Gideon was suddenly feeling things in the presence of Oketra was that she exudes those feeling as a false sense of security. Keeping the masses calm while calling for solidarity. If the gods were created/subverted by Bolas, this is highly insidious. I'm wondering if the other gods will have that same feel, that they will exude the sentiments of whatever ideal they embody to keep the masses under control. I would like this twist as where Theros gods exude power and majesty for more devotion, Amonkhet gods do that for control and compliance.
Interesting to note is the Amonkhet are gods of ideas and not nature. Also the gatewatch suck at stealth and keeping a low profile.

Today's article was definitely better than the last one. The characters still feel very stereotypical/color-specific in what they say and do (especially Chandra), but Gideon's perspective wasn't so bad. He's setting himself up for some major disillusionment though.
I liked how Oketra was introduced. The god cards we've seen so far have been a bit disappointing, but knowing about their flavor background makes me appreciate them again. Hopefully we'll see the other gods too. I don't know if Chandra would get along with Hazoret...
Chandra was a lot less obnoxious here and her line about cats actually made me crack a smile. This is about the right level of banter for her character I think.
Gideon's kool-aid conversion felt awful rushed and also like a retread of Elspeth's Theros storyline, but I'm willing to give some credit to the writers and see how much of his conversion is Magic-fueled versus personality-based. I guess it also makes sense that Gideon (unlike Jace, Liliana, and all of us in the audience) has no idea what Bolas is capable of and that after the senseless horror of BFZ and SOI and the murky political drama and revolution of KALA, he's yearning for an ordered society that "makes sense". Overall decent story this week.
