Remember if Nicol has been using the trials as a way to ignite planeswalker sparks, it likely is a hold over from before when Planeswalkers could yank other through the blind eternities and could sense other sparks (even if they weren't ignited)
The original plan was probably "I sense a spark." -kidnap person he senses, dump them on Amonkhet, they have to participate in the trials, maybe ascend, maybe not.- "Oh I got an ascent from someone, okay time to give them the chance to work for me..or kill them if they say no."
Now that he can't yank people from all over, he just lets things continue as normal because why bother changing it.
... maybe that's why Bolas sent Tezzeret to Kaladesh for a Planar Portal?
Bolas didn't send Tezzy there. Tezzeret went to the faire to see if he found anything worth swiping..and stumbled upon the only thing worth swiping.
I'm not sure if it has any relevance (more likely not than yes), but among all the Invocations previewed (that didn't originate from the set itself), the only slightly specific card is Maelstrom Pulse. Does Amonkhet have "natural" Maelstrom energies (as in it was there as a natural result of artificial creation/conversion), or did Bolas either infuse part of whatever he managed to absorb from Alara onto Amonkhet (so that the Gods could utilize it) or he taught them the spell directly (assuming Bolas somehow learned the spell via absorption in the first place)?
I'm taking the Invocations a bit more literally this time round, because they don't seem to have a mechanical theme linking them together but rather seem much more like a flavored theme. I doubt it would have any impact on the actual plot, but I do hope it would at least be part of the world-building we need.

Yeah, I'm going to say that Croc and Snek are casting Maelstrom Pulse because they have Bolas Powers, not because Amonkhet has anything called a "Maelstrom."
So, I read the story this afternoon, and I've been going about my day, occasionally ruminating on it, and I find myself annoyed at the inconsistency of character power level. What I mean is this:
The Gatewatch was ambushed by a horde of undead and then some wurms just for good measure;
Jace is a mind mage and virtually useless against ranks of undead - Accepted
Nissa was having trouble drawing mana for some unexplained reason - Alright
That leaves Gideon, Chandra and Liliana to do most of the fighting. The problem I have is that absolutely nothing in the description of the fight made it sound like the situation was at all different from ones that each of those three have INDIVIDUALLY handled solo. After all the battles that the Gatewatch has been trough in the past that largely amounted to speedbumps on their road to victory, I just can't take it seriously that a bunch of zombies and a handfull of wurms could have ever posed a real threat to even ONE of them, let alone all three.
It feels like they were neutered just to fit the narrative of "Uh OH! They're in real danger now!" except no they're not and never were.
Not really bothered by that, its not a fictional account of a WW2 or civil war soldier. Superhero stories have to do this all the time, villains are interesting when they vary in power and threat level, and you need your hero to have to be in danger from all of them. Today we're fighting Galactus and driving him away from Earth, tomorrow maybe we're captured by Mole Man.
When I see a new story I'm wondering "ok, is this the titan-killing gatewatch today, or the gatewatch that got wrecked by Ob Nixilis? Oh its the weak version today, cool." What would bug me is if you are not consistent within that day's story.

Somehow, I doubt Bolas said "hey you know what, Tezzy.... I'm kinda busy right now, so you are a smart guy and I trust you. Why don't you.... I dunno.... wander the planes for a few years and see if you can find something that could be useful for me. Check back with me every 5 years, OK?"
If he's on Kaladesh, I think its because Bolas told him to go there for a specific task. Whether Bolas somehow knew he'd find a planar bridge or just got lucky is unknown, perhaps Bolas figured the inventors would come up with something someday and ordered Tezzeret to entrench himself in the leadership structure on that plane until they came up with a super weapon or energy source or amazing device, something worth burning his cover to steal.
On the topic of Bolas "farming planeswalkers" on Amonkhet:
I could see a walker that ascended through the trials being somewhere in the story. Statistically it should be very unlikely, but well, everything can happen for the sake of a story. However, I think it's highly unlikely that we see two or more "farmed" walkers - at least to me, that would be a little too convenient for Bolas. Really can't imagine the planeswalker thing being anything but a nice side effect.
Besides, creative has historically been quite vague about the nature of the spark: what species can have it,
The general of thumb is any species that is naturally-born, has a soul and is sapient (so the same species of dragons Niv is could be a walker but a more animal dragon like Hypersonic Dragon and those on Jund can not). Because of their market research showing player tend to like human or humanoid species more that what we tend to see in cards, but anything that fits those three things can be walkers.
the requirements for ignition,
Extreme emotion is the typical case. We see it happen with traumatic events more but a planeswalker can ignite their spark through mediation or being extreme happy. Someone once though of a kinda sad story of a walker's spark igniting during their "I do" kiss at a wedding and not knowing how to planes walk back

(I think) the planeswalkers guild to Kaladesh comfirms this since Tezzeret had been looking at a large range of things and had the planar bridge big enough to fit a gear hulk through so I think Tezzeret just lucked out on bridge and just was scouting for something useful.

I do agree on the minimum wage and vacation day questions, those are not cool, unless its asked in a way like "these are our policies for vacation, are you fine with that?"
Does Bolas PAY Tezzeret? Does he get vacation? Where would he go?

I've theorized Ashiok being a Worthy more or less from the start. Vaguely Egyptian Aesthetic, heavy interest in gods, etc. Perhaps a Worthy who learned his life was a lie?

On the other hand, this is probably nitpicking and setting high standards, considering that the authors probably don't have too much time to write the articles, which results in literary fast food
Yes, if only they had some time off to refine their writing, say four or five weeks...
