The fight against the sandstorm, the zombies, the wurms and then the undead wurms was a bit of a slog. It reminded me of the last time I read a full story article, during BFZ, where Gideon whipped his sural back and forth a bunch. They probably wanted to portray how dangerous the lands outside of the city are, but after the zombies it kind of felt like the author just wanted to pad the length of the article a bit more.
However, what we saw of the plane was interesting. I'm looking forward to learning about how the Gods and Bolas are connected and how Amonkhet "works" as a whole. I'm much more interested in the world building aspect of the stories than the actual characters, which are just overall unappealing to me, although some are better than others (Gideon=Liliana>Jace>Nissa>Chandra).

Second Edit: Is anyone else curious as to why that one sandwurm picture had completely different dimensions than the others? The 9th picture down in the story, during Chandra's segment?
I think the third sandwurm picture is the art for a sandwurm token. I could imagine the second picture being on a sorcery that makes the tokens.
I did not even think about tokens. That's intensely exciting to me.
Well, that was not subtle. From the first paragraph, the dominant, overwhelming theme of that story is "the Gatewatch is doing something incredibly stupid. Holy smokes was this a bad idea, they should have listened to Ajani, this will not end well."
I'm fine with beating the reader over the head with that message if they plan to do something very bad to the gatewatch (kill or enslave Gideon?) so that even the most dense reader who missed the obvious hints at the end of Kaladesh will get it and be prepared for whats coming.
Unlike most people here, I'm not obsessed with wanting the gatewatch to fail, if the story is well-written then its fine if they always win, but they are setting us up in the beginning of this story for "a massive fall after inexplicable hubris" trope, so they definitely need to pay that off at the end of this block.
Seems obvious to me that they are setting up Ajani to be the new white leader, taking over after tragedy.
I enjoyed the story, but I had a LOT of moments that made me go "Wait what?"
For example.
Escaping from the sandstorm...by hiding in a glass dome.
On a world with two suns.
Like, it was too hot for everyone before they entered a focusing chamber, how did they not just...melt.
The crude glass shouldn't have been transparent in the first place (even though it's implied to be), and it definitely wouldn't form a perfect convex lens.
Seemed clear to me that the story said she was shaping the glass as it melted, she didn't just blast the sand and hope for the best.
That said, I don't know how to go from "molten glass that is just now becoming solid again" to "fine to walk inside though maybe a bit uncomfortable" within seconds, even if the cooling was being helped along by strong wind. Sounds like a physics problem that needs some calculating.
To some extent the story might be a bit unfair with the whole "wow this is stupid" theme, there are no atlases or guidebooks or multiverse internet to consult, at some point you just gotta go there, look around, and see what Bolas is up to.
That said, they at least should have sent one or two people to scout around, ready to planeswalk away at trouble, and after a week or two go to the group and say "ok, here's what I found, follow me to the city, we'll hole up in this place I secured and figure out what to do next."
Wait does this confirm the Jackal is red? The flavor text on Glorybringer and the fact that it's a dragon seems to imply that Hazoret is the Croc
The Jackal is heavily implied to be red based on the fact that the Croc shows up in the two multicolor Masterpieces, and the only linking thread there is the color black.
Like, it's not a guarantee, but it seems really likely at this point.
This is my vague prediction. Bolas took over the plane to drain it of its mana for wtv reason, which resulted in the dunes. The gods seeing what he was doing, put a magical barrier around the city to protect it's people from Bolas. They will fight along side the gatewatch to help defeat Bolas and free their people. And hopefully they will fail, Gideon gets imprisoned or enslaved (i doubt wotc will kill him off), the rest of the GW goes to dominaria to meet up with Ajani and that will lead us to our next block.
Also, and I know this was said many times before, but the name of the second set sounds like a big spoiler. We don't know exactly what it means, but "Hour of Devastation" doesn't sound like "Happy Ending, All is Well" to me.

It's not the biggest spoiler in the world; certainly not as vague as "Eldritch Moon" or "Dragon's Maze" but about on the level of "Aether Revolt." It's not "New Phyrexia" or "Alara Reborn"-level spoilery.
I feel much the same as most of what I read in this thread about today's story.
My question is, Jace realizes they really stepped in it and calls for them to leave and regroup, Gideon believes he's just led his friends to death by his own hubris again, and when they are saved (I wish the author spent more time on the god part than they did on describing the wind at the start, but that's just my first impression) and see the city...that's all just forgotten?
If I did something really stupid that almost killed me and my friends, but by sheer luck I survived, I'd at least step back and reconsider what I'm doing. If Jace and Gideon don't do that, despite what they felt during the battle (which was more or less believable and felt right), then that's a narrative failure. Especially for Gideon, who already killed a bunch of friends via hubris, and almost just had it happen again.

by killing Gideon, would that mean either Ajani will the "face of white" walker, or does Elspeth have a chance of coming back to life? My only issue with Gideon being killed would be that they've already killed a white walker.
I'd love to see the Gatewatch royally screw something up though

SOMETHING bad is going to happen to the Gatewatch. We haven't been to Vryn yet so Jace won't die. Lili has a whole other Demon to kill in her plot arc so Lili won't die. I think every other member could easily be killed off as they have an arc that could conclude here.
As for Elspeth: She's just about confirmed to be coming back to life next time we head to Theros, but as a Returned, so in other words the face of white-BLACK. Ajani firmly has green in his identity now. If they kill Gideon then either the Gatewatch disbands (for now) or continues on without a monowhite-aligned member, and the mostly nebulous and unofficial status of face-of-the-color goes to no one. (It's unnecessary in game design terms now that there are no core sets.)
We have, more or less, confirmation that the Gods are controlled by Bolas. Source: Here.
Doesn't really confirm anything, for all we know the gods have "free will" and believe Bolas is truly the pharaoh god.

“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
It sounds like Bolas made use of an already existing culture to further his own goals. That makes me wonder if he also is behind the state Amonkhet is currently in (basically all deathly desert and one large oasis) or if that is the plane's "natural state".
Well, that was not subtle. From the first paragraph, the dominant, overwhelming theme of that story is "the Gatewatch is doing something incredibly stupid. Holy smokes was this a bad idea, they should have listened to Ajani, this will not end well."

I'd be fine with the Gatewatch breaking up tbh, it was cool to fight the Eldrazi but now I just find it annoying. It's just a group of people who travel together all the time.
I guess Garruk is GB now so he can't be the face of Green anymore. Chandra has been the face of red for so long I don't even know if there are any characters that can be the face of red, as Tibalt is the only red walker I can remember and he's, well, he's Tibalt
I do not think that there is even the slightest chance in hell that the Gatewatch disbands anytime soon (unless its a momentary thing that almost immediately reforms). It'll exist, possibly with people joining and leaving, for the foreseeable future.
Just thought of something thats kinda crazy. What was the Gatewatch planning to tell Ajani if everything worked out pretty much as they planned? They go to Amonkhet, quickly find Bolas, figure out what he's doing, foil all his plans, Chandra transforms Bolas into well-done dragon steak, and then they go to the agreed meetup place where Ajani is waiting.
"Welcome new friends, I have located a couple new allies who will join us, one of them knows something about Bolas and his possible schemes, and we have supplies. At last, I believe we may be ready for this great, and dangerous mission."
"uhhh yeah..... about that. See, we never agreed with your argument and didn't really trust you, so we pretended to agree to your plan, waited till you left so you couldn't discover what we were up to, then we went to Bolas with the element of surprise. His plan is foiled and he's dead now, but don't worry, you are still totally a member of the gatewatch and our friend!"
At that point, if I was Ajani, I'd be an ex-member of the Gatewatch.

I'd rather have a legendary human wurmrider to be honest. Haven't read Dune, but that seems to be a thing there and is a pretty cool concept.

Many thanks to DNC at Heroes of the Plane Studios
Just because Glorybringer is reptilian doesn't mean it has any connection to the Croc.

Going by the Trial Card from the Toy Fair: White, Blue, Green, Black, Red. Solidarity, Knowledge, Strength, Ambition, Zeal.
And I 100% agree on the not-dying but really messing up. I think today's story is a good step in that direction.
Maybe the Gatewatch will have to run the Trials, and Hazoret will make them pick one among themselves to get sacrificed.

"Gideon." "Gideon." "Gideon." "Gideon."
"I suppose I am invulnerable."
Little did they know that in order to deal with the equally indestructible zombies, these gods do more exiling than killing.
EDIT: Which, again, I don't think is actually gonna happen.
