I hope that some planeswalker dies and it's not a throw-away character. Oh, and that a deus ex machina doesn't restore him/her to life. (Looking at you, Ugin.) There's never any investment in the blocks this way. You know people will survive. Take Elspeth. Even she isn't dead. She's in the underworld but still not dead.
Venser and Xenagos are gone for good, I believe. Not to mention all those pre-mending walkers. And Vronos, too, although he was created to get slaughtered by Garruk.
However, I think that real planeswalker deaths may be a thing of the past (or at least very, very rare) because people were so upset about Elspeth and because the story revolves around planeswalkers so much more now. The Gatewatch members is especially unlikely to die. (Plot armor is great storytelling! Really helps your suspension of disbelief!) But if one of the Gatewatcb does die, I would be pleasantly surprised.
Or perhaps it was like Argentum, a stable existing plane, only this one was simply an endless desert, so Bolas built it up and populated it.
I still don't buy Argentum was pre-existing, it makes no darn sense!
Why? There are physically empty planes out there. Karn still made Argentum itself, it's just the pocket of reality was pre-existing.
I really liked that with the First Mirrodin block they explored the effects of a planeswalker leaving an artificial plane for a long time. We actually see what would happen if Serra died, or what will eventually happen to Phyrexia without Yawgmoth or Serra's Realm without..Serra.
Going from "Karn crafted Argentum out of nothing." To "Karn made Argentum out of an unstable but already existing plane" removes a lot of that, we go from seeing an example of something we are told happens to a special case.
Edit : RE Planeswalker dying : It makes no sense to kill one of the Gatewatch this soon, there has barely been enough story content to cover a single book since BFZ started. The Problem with the Gatewatch has nothing to do with plot armor it has to do with the first two sets of them being together involving them having no real stakes or villains.
Gatewatch or no, NOBODY thought for a second Zendikar or Innistrad were in any sort of real danger of being nommed.
Rather than die, I'd prefer seeing a relevant, formerly friendly Planeswalker (not asking for gatewatch because it won't happen and if it would it's too soon for it) being forced to serve Bolas.

Not nearly enough good, highly desired, or beloved sphinxes to be a masterpiece set unto themselves.
Edit: also many of the ones that would show up if that were a reasonable thing to do are legendary which would restrict what they could do with the art. Since they have shown a trend of themeing masterpieces to the plane.

I'd like to make a good case for that someone being Tamiyo. She stood by as Innistrad was going to be devoured, preferring to watch rather than do the right thing. Someone like that might be a good target for Nicol Bolas, who probably has oodles of forbidden knowledge. If there's anything that Tamiyo wants, it's knowledge.
I think Narset better fits the bill of a Planeswalker who would want knowledge. Tamiyo is more interested in history, specifically. Tamiyo wasn't interfering because she had know way of knowing what would happen when Avacyn died (and remember, she was adamant about Jace not trying to kill Avacyn) and she's acutely aware of "How large their [Planeswalker] feet are."
Someone like Bolas, who encourages Planeswalkers interfering in the affairs of non-walkers, likening them unto gods, above mortal judgment and laws? That doesn't seem like her cuppa.

I've been holding out hope for a masterpiece Consecrated Sphinx for months now. The Mirrodin Besieged art is completely unappealing.
From the info dump this morning we know that mummies (creature-type zombie) are in white, Oracle's vault shows maybe spider folk? (they are using what looks like webbing to build the vault), three areas/location named, the broken lands, Shefet (which seems to be a desert) and the Luxa river, the goat people are in fact minotaurs, drakes and dragons are crocodile like, seems like the non-mummy zombies are called (or are) cursed and Graceful Cat suggests the cat looking god is named Oketra.
“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
The Broken Lands has me interested. Is Bolas wiping out Amonkhet regularly, like with what is probably going to happen in Hour of Devastation?
Possible, the art book had given us this quote;
“When the Second Sun rests between the horns on the horizon, so begins the Hour of Revelation. Then the Hour of Glory, the Hour of Promise, and finally the Hour of Eternity.”
— The Accounting of Hours
Which might be a grand lie Bolas put into the plane.
Also, I think the reason they used Hound for the Ainok is the connotation we have with the word.
Hound tends to refer to hunting dogs specifically, so to say that the Ainok are hunting dogs isn't that weird.
The debate on that is if Hound should be changed to Dog since not all dogs are hounds but all hounds are dogs. Also as I said above dogs(/wolves) and Jackals are not very closely related and the different creature type seems right.

We have the Broken Lands, and we have "the city" (mentioned on Tattered Mummy). To me this sounds like there is only one larger, major settlement or "hub of civilzation" on Amonkhet, surrounded by deserts and the Broken Lands. I think it's highly likely that the remnants of earlier civilizations are leftovers from previous Hours of Devastation and that Bolas is going to trigger a new one in the second Amonkhet block. As to why I have no idea yet.
I stand by the idea that Bolas made Amonkhet as a giant self-recharging battery and the "hour of devastation" happens when he returns to the plane to consume all the accumulared mana/energy.
He pretty much tried to do that already with the Conflux on Alara, so it would not be beyond him to do that.
It could also work like some kind of "failsafe" in case he lost his pre-mending powers.
Still, it doesn't explain why he needed Tezzeret to steal/invent a planar portal.
As for the permanent loss, if they don't want to go as far as that, the least they could do could be a "permanent scar", like Gideon being forced to sacrifice innocent people to hunt down Bolas, resulting in an inner struggle that isn't resolved in a shoulder shrug like everything that is thrown at the gatewatch.
I've been thinking the same thing. The flavor text of the cards shown off yesterday makes mention of multiple long dead civilizations on Amonkhet. That, along with the fact that Bolas has been shown to have no regard for planes in attempts to regain his power, and the fact that the second set in the block is called "hour of devastation", I think this is a real possibility.
Rather than die, I'd prefer seeing a relevant, formerly friendly Planeswalker (not asking for gatewatch because it won't happen and if it would it's too soon for it) being forced to serve Bolas.
No. Converted characters can be redeemed, and knowing the Creative, they will be eventually, thus minimizing the loss for the Gatewatch. Dead is dead. You don't get to come back (Theros being an exception). That loss is permanent and a permanent loss is what this story desperately needs.
The best you can hope for is a death of an allied person, not a Gatewatch member. They aren't going to kill someone for a group they just started getting going, it's way too soon for that. I wouldn't expect a death of anyone in the Gatewatch, let alone one of the core five, for a few years. Unless they change their "dead is dead" rule.

BOOM.
I really love it when they reinterpret a card name too- on Mirrodin, consecrated meant compleated by the Phyrexians, and here it seems to be a more traditional sense of divinely-touched.
Personally, I got giddy over the Dark Ritual and Mind Twist.
So there were theories that the trials are being used to ignite planeswalker sparks and that Nicol Bolas was essentially harvesting these champions. I think that on the flavor text on one of the recently spoiled cards. (Cursed Minotaur) It mentions in the flavor text of the black zombie which is obviously dishonored and not embalmed. That "this" is what awaits them if they fail.
Now that may not seem like much but if you look at the name of the flavor text and the title... Djeru, initiate of Tah crop.
To my knowledge we don't have a designation yet for Tah but crop makes it feel as if it could very well be a prospective champion like in the theory that has been going around.
From the art work of the masterpieces it looks like the gods are mono-colored, with the multicolored spells show two gods teaming up to cast it.

Might be more figurative. I'm sure it's not the case that everyone who dies on Amonkhet becomes undead. Not even Grixis had that to that extent. She's probably speaking figuratively: Garruk called Innistrad a "cursed plane" in the trailer for the original set.
WotC doesn't usually have much presence at cons outside of San Diego Comicon and PAX Prime. That said they go all out at Prime because its in Seattle.

So, not Stargate, but Dune. Including Shai'Hulud, but no spice.
And the last part with Gideon and his realization of the gods just only reinforces my gut feeling that he is not gonna leave Amonkhet.
Let this great clan rest in peace (2001-2011)
I dunno, the "evil bastard running the show by posing as a god" thing is still pretty Stargate. I expect a pastiche of lots of desert-themed settings.
