If you told me these two were the same person, just a few months apart, I'd laugh in your face.
I'd even be dubious if you said they were related.
I think when Gideon first appeared in old Zendikar block, he was at least middle aged? Now he's at least 10 years younger, and Amonkhet brought that age back a little.

Honestly these are MUCH closer than several of the other arts we've gotten for some characters. Even just counting other Gatewatch members, there's Jace, Memory Adept vs Oath of Jace (the latter being possibly my favorite art depicting Jace), and Liliana of the Dark Realms vs Liliana of the Veil (compare how gaunt, pallid and outright frail Dark Realms is vs Veil).
EDIT: I have no idea how to point the card previews at the correct versions of Memory Adept and Dark Realms, rather than their black on black versions, which are not the ones I mean.
I think the original book description mentioned never ending sandstorms outside the city, but I think it's been changed. Now it says:
“When the Second Sun rests between the horns on the horizon, so begins the Hour of Revelation. Then the Hour of Glory, the Hour of Promise, and finally the Hour of Eternity.”
— The Accounting of Hours
The Second Sun creeps across the sky, growing ever closer to the horns of the God-Pharaoh. These pages, lavishly illustrated with the award-winning art of Magic: The Gathering®, will introduce you to the people of Amonkhet, whose life is a series of trials meant to prepare them for the great God-Pharaoh’s return. Join the heroic Planeswalkers of the Gatewatch as they come here to face the evil dragon Nicol Bolas, whose schemes span the planes of the Multiverse.
The glorious hope and desolate despair of Amonkhet await you as the final hours draw near!
Well that adds some punch to name Hour of Devastation
Still, the important part is: what is supposed to happen in this hour? May be every pub closes down and people are so enraged that they start a violent riot?
EDIT:
on a more serious note, what if the entire plane is an immense power generator and the Hour of Devastation is the point when the plane served its purpose and is dismantled and all the stored energy absorbed by Bolas himself?
Like it was a long-term failsafe in case Bolas lost his original old-walker powers.
Then the plot would end with the gatewatch winning by trapping Bolas inside of the auto-destroying plane while it is being destroyed.
Please, someone at wizards reassure me that the plot is not this stupid and cliched.
Bolas eating all that energy and regaining even more of his old walker powers would be wonderful. I doubt he gets trapped on his own plane.
If you told me these two were the same person, just a few months apart, I'd laugh in your face.
I'd even be dubious if you said they were related.
Obviously the on the left is Gideon's twin brother, Yideon. We hardly speak of him though.
I thought his twin was originally Gytheon, but when he showed up on Esper they called him Kideon.
(It might just be me, but the whole name change of Kytheon to Gideon was so strange and made little sense; someone mispronounces/mishears your name and you're suddenly someone else? I dunno, man!)

I always saw taking the new name as him deciding to "start fresh." Kytheon was an idiot who got all his friends killed, but Gideon is a proper knight what doesn't make stupid mistakes like that.
... am I the only one who's bothered by the fact that Gideon's outfit got redesigned, and Nissa's still wearing the same outfit she's worn since BfZ? At least try to have her blend in!

I wonder if they even get to bath or wash their cloth, consider how busy their schedule has been.
No, Amonkhet is covered by a sandstorm that only Bolas can protect its single city-oasis from
That creates one huge question though.
Why did Bolas make a plane just to have 90% of it be a giant sandstorm.
To converse the planes stability maybe?

Because currently planes in mtg exist specifically to show a single aspect of the world. We will not be getting vast and different feeling worlds like Dominaria in magic anymore and it's been this way for a while.
It's really best to not think about it because it's absolutely immersion shattering how small feeling worlds are.
Planes can vary dramatically in size, particularly if it's an artificial one. There's nothing saying/proving that 90% of the plane is covered in eternal sandstorm, the main city-oasis may well prove to be the vast majority of the plane, the sandstorm just serving as a barrier to keep the population contained.
I mean, even with an overarching theme each plane still feels diverse. And we have no idea what Amonkhet is like, there may not be a sandstorm covering the rest of the plane. Could just be a trick to keep the populace in check.

Which I find rather sad. I don't understand how an entire world could be so limited and contained. It doesn't feel authentic. Call them distant unexplored lands. Leave it up to the imagination what may lie beyond. But outright limiting a plane's boundaries seems awfully stifling.
Original Zendikar had a homogeneous theme yet still managed to feel vast and diverse. The return felt small and made entire continents feel tiny. IDK what it is about how worlds are being handled lately but I got a massive feel from original Zendikar, like it was a large plane as Dominaria was, but with more of a focus on theme.
I think there still needs to be a bit of time before saying it's an issue, but I didn't find Zendikar 2 or Innistrad 2 to be small really. Kaladesh though I understand that feeling, it felt very constrained. I worry that could be a recurring thing, but it may not be that kind of problem. More cards that just depict day to day stuff, not Planeswalkers might help.
We didn't really see very much of Kaladesh. Just Ghirapur mostly. On Innistrad we saw a continent. And on Zendikar we saw an entire planet. Planes are going to vary in the feel of their size based on the story and how much it focuses on. That doesn't mean that the planes are small. It means there's more to see next time. I can't wait to go to Innistrad again and see the other continents where there might be elves and non-wolf lycanthropes.

This is true, remember how in our return to Fiora we learned a little bit more about Trest and how it is also a city within Fiora? I think its natural that we don't see the entirety of a world in one go.

Bolas didn't create Amonketh but enslaved it instead. The entire plane is under his mind control and the devices that keep the mind control persistent are the horns which we can see in the full land art. There are several of those scattered all over Amonketh with the purpose of keeping the mind control going. Gatewatch is going to figure this out and they are going to free the plane before Bolas gets what he wants. Bolas loses, is forced to retrat and Gatewatch scores another win.
Just wait and see.
Actually he did create it. WotC said so in a article they wrote about Bolas a few days ago.
"This did not used to be the case. Before the Mending (we are coming to that), planeswalkers were nigh omnipotent in the areas they had mastered. This is when Sorin, for example, built the Helvault and Archangel Avacyn. Bolas himself built (at least one) world from scratch (the soon to be explored Amonkhet)."

Is that article actually Wizards or a third party? I don't see anything claiming it to be official Wizards, though that could just be oversight on my part.

Yes, that means they are promoting it; not that it is word of god. I doubt they would ignore the article if it got one thing wrong when it does such a good job of summarizing previous information.
I just can’t wait to see what the races/creature types we get for Amonkhet are. IMO Top-down sets always have the the most interesting ideas on how they mix in magics worlds and what is in the mythology.
So far we can confirm jackal people, sphinxes, demon(s),gods, croc dragons and mummies/zombies.
