Something I was wondering about that I didn't see brought up (unless I missed it).
What if Amonkhet's trials are actually attempts to make any dormant planeswalker sparks ignite? Only a select few make it through, and they sound pretty brutal, conditions that might be fertile soil for planeswalker ignition.
Also, if they saw Bolas as a god, they might think it's a gift from him and be beholden to him, so he has a group of worshipping planeswalkers he helped create/ignite.
It could also be something that comes from pre-mending. Bolas senses someone with a spark on a plane he rules? Kidnap them and dump them on Amonkhet and see if they ignite.
I wish we'd see the Planeswalkers in local garb. Seeing Jace in Egyptian-style clothing would be so awesome. When we visit Theros getting some Gideon toga action too. Tired of all the same outfits. Don't these people need to blend into the plane a little? Get with it.
According to MaRo, Amonkhet was briefly considered to be the Fall 2016 and Kaladesh for Spring 2017 for reasons he cannot yet disclose. While I believe the reason probably involves block mechanics, I wanted to draw attention to this MaRo's comment here because there are storyline implications for this change. Was Amonkhet originally going to be a cutaway from the Gatewatch storyline to see what Bolas was doing to set-up Tezzeret's actions on Kaladesh?
In a good written story Ugin would have eaten her for talking smack. He is a dragon, after all, who had warned the Gatewatch multiple times not to kill the titans and they had done the very exact opposite. Ugin was pissed when he had showed up and someone who is an ant when compared to him and who had played a huge roll in killing the titans had decided to be cocky in the presence of an ancient dragon planeswalker? I can't really thing of an excuse other than marketing for Ugin not killing here then and there, but ok, you can say that that wouldn't have happened because Ugin is a ''good guy'', sure, I'll give you that.
Chandra acting that way in front of Nicol Bolas should get her killed in an instant. If you've been reading older MtG books than you would know that Bolas doesn't tolerate BS from anyone and that he has done much worse to those who have provoked him for much less than being cocky and talking smack. All I'm saying is that if Chandra acts the same way as she always does towards Nicol Bolas that there is no excuse the Creative can come up with for Bolas not murdering here there and there.
By multiple times you mean the one time he spoke to Jace? And yeah sure he was angry but Ugin isn't the sort to just roll up and nom on someone because they were talking *****. You're right Bolas absolutely is. However Chandra has no reason to be that arrogant. She has three friends who have been espousing the power and cruelty of Bolas and she's not high on having just had a plane-worth of mana funneled through her and incinerating two Galactus'. Let's just get over this idea of seeing the gatewatch die before they're even a year old.

This comes from the same person who, during BFZ, told us that their plan was to have Emrakul on Zendikar as well but that it was changed in the last moment due to the change in the block structure and the, during EMN, said that their plan was to have Emrakul on Innistrad all along. I would take everything that MaRo says with a grain of salt.
Emrakul being in the third set of Zendikar doesn't mean she couldn't have been in Innistrad. From what wizards staff have said there was a point where that was the case. I'm guessing Emrakul in the early drafts survived/escaped/ran away from the gatewatch on Zendikar-aka called away to Innistrad for the events of SoI.

My only worry is that "Bolas controlled world" will over shadow "Egyptian myth world". Otherwise I'm pretty happy I not very familiar with South Asia culture or Egyptian Mythology (more in to Greek) so I intreated to see what both Kaladesh and Amonkhet will bring. Plus I wonder which of the gatewatch will go there, with Jace and Liliana both personally knowing Bolas and Chandra knows of him, be interesting to see the conflict that happens. And while people are guess Liliana 3rd demon might be here, that seems like a lot of things going on.
I expect that if Lili's third demon is there he will be the focus of the first set, possibly even one of the five gods, only to have Bolas revealed after the demons defeat in Hour of Devastation.
There's no way Bolas will be revealed in the second set. They've already announced Bolas's involvement so its not a secret.
We know Nicol Bolas is involved storywise, but he is not going to appear until the second set. The pack artworks for this block is already revealed and it shows Bolas is not on the cover of the Amonkhet but is on the cover of Hour of Devastation. Therefore he is not going to appear as a card until the second set. We can deduce from here that the plot will be something else (probably Lili's demon) until Bolas actually returns.
Unless of course there's going to be two Bolas cards in this set...

Or the first set's story could have to do with Bolas' plans and how Razekath is involved. You know. The way we saw Tezzeret and got ideas into his plans in Kaladesh's story even though we didn't get his card until Aether Revolt

I semi-agree. Some worlds (Ravnica and Zendikar) you can get away with that and I think they need to keep the character "iconic" and thier clothing is one way of doing that. However as we have seen with the walkers on Innistrad their is a way of giving them outfits that still look like their iconic looks.
Gideon would probity wear the amor and toga/chiton look he had in his origin story.

@Tiro of Meletis: Does the implication of Chandra wearing a Sari count?
We haven't actually seen that on a card. Jace did wear a coat in Innistrad, but that's it.
True.
We also did get Chandra in her new Kaladesh armor with all the gold patterns on it. Although I still find it funny with Chandra's current armor is considered at least a decade out of fashion on Kaladesh.
Honestly though, its just a symptom of Saturday Morning Cartoon. Why do they wear the same clothes? Brand recognition. The other reason being, why should they bother? If Jace can disguise the entire group to perfectly look like Consul guards with an illusion spell, then they don't need to try and blend in naturally and the proper term for this is "A wizard did it". Yet there also comes the problem. What if Nicol Bolas actually has some sort of monitoring system that alerts Nicol Bolas and/or his guards that some people have a magic effect around them?
How about a bit of fan service for the fans as say Jace picks out a more revealing set of clothes while on Amonkhet is all I am saying.
Jace has his adorable twink self buried under that dreadful cloak all the time. Show me some skin. Gideon too. I want them wearing golden Egyptian skirt things, with prominent falcon-themed golden chest ornamentation that branches off into sick shoulder accents, and those lined pharonic headpieces with a cobra in the center that has rubies for eyes OR ELSE
Jace is self-conscious to a ridiculous degree. Gideon might lose some clothes, since he doesn't really have a need for armor, given ow his powers were retconned.
Yeah, Jace will probably suffer sweat stains and skin rashes rather than come out from under his cloak.
Liliana's going to have an interesting experience too. Body-hugging eveningwear and fur capes aren't exactly suitable for a desert excursion, and would you look at her complexion? She's going to cook like a lobster under the Amonkhet sun.
What Jace needs is more positive reinforcement from Liliana in loosening up like in Homesick and other parts of KLD+AER. Like I would hope that Liliana picks him out a nice pair of Amonkhet local clothes, blues and whites with some gold to accentuate. She pays him a compliment when he puts it on like "That really looks good on you."
I'd be very annoyed if him walking around in that heavy-looking robe wasn't addressed when he is on Amonkhet. I'd be even more annoyed if it was hand waved with a dumb spell that regulated his body temperature in hotter weather. As choices in clothing is part of character development.
Gideon walking around in a toga while on Theros because he feels comfortable in one? That would be an absolute treat to see. Bare-chested would be even better. Even Liliana would give him a pass on Amonkhet.
I could actually buy that the characters in some other fiction are just poor and don't have many clothes to wear, but the Gatewatch? They are not poor. They are actually fairly well off thanks to Jace being Mr Guildpact.
I mean, these are the same faces we're seeing all the time, block after block. That consistency can be nice if they'd switch a few things up about them a little. Instead of oh another Jace card, I'd like to see them be more thematic while in the setting. Oh, that's Jace when he was on AMONKHET. It would be so neat to see that diversity. Even weaving spells related to the setting, like a Lilliana card of her in a white dress and veil featuring mummy zombies or Egyptian tombs with hieroglyphics in the backdrop instead of her standing there in a purple evening gown with a neutral background.
My greatest fear though is that we get Bolas World instead of Egypt World. I don't want the former dominating the flavor the way Eldrazi killed Adventure World. And I hope Amonkhet is really sunny and vibrant, no more of this overcast.

I could understand them wearing the same clothes during a pre-mending block as we would be usually dealing with legends stuck on one plane, not planeswalkers doing some plane hopping. Better yet, I can even point to a guy who swapped outfits (and color identity) because it was part of the character growth he had received. Kamahl, From a gladiator to a druid and an even more recent example is Daxos who died and became a returned. Which kind of begs the question of each iteration of a planeswalker card. Physically there really isn't a difference for each Chandra until you get to Chandra, Torch of Defiance where she has finally updated her armor, nine real world years later. Like Tamiyo makes sense why she appears to be in the same clothing, as in actuality, very little time has passed and she hadn't exactly left. Jace's most dramatic change of clothes is he temporarily got a coat.
Like take this example of Zuko from the Avatar: the Last Airbender. Like the sheer variety and twists on his clothes in a 3-Season cartoon show back from 2005-2007 had forty-one variations.
It will be Egypt World featuring Nicol Bolas as the main star.
Liliana's going to have an interesting experience too. Body-hugging eveningwear and fur capes aren't exactly suitable for a desert excursion, and would you look at her complexion? She's going to cook like a lobster under the Amonkhet sun.
You raise a good point to why characters might need a costume change in Amonkhet. Garruk, Jace and Liliana changed outfit due to chill of Innisrads climate (Sarkhan also have a few different outfits a even changed in the same block, showing Khans Tarkir seems colder than Dragons Tarkir). As a desert dominated world with two suns, safe to say the plane is pretty warm and hot.
The people of the multi-verse seem kinda chill, with no one raise a hoot over Ajani on Kaladesh and Nissa, Nahiri and Tamiyo on Innistrad really so maybe walkers figure they can get away with different planar clothing for awhile?

THE ELDER DRAGON THEORY
The reason Nicol Bolas was drawn to Alara was because they had the perfect alignment with the elder dragons who were all planeswalkers who died/lost their spark during the mending (time spiral). The only place we've seen him since then is Tarkir, another three color plane. But due to the wrong alignment he was weak (not to mention for the first time in years we see another elder dragon cough cough ugin).
Why has he been doing this? What is the intricate scheme his been weaving since the original Zendikar? He's been trying to undo the mending.
Before the mending planeswalkers were immortal and nearly omnipotent. And the elder dragons strongest among them. They were godlike. And what has been revealed that Nicol Bolas has on Amonkhet? Gods. So, he is trying to or maybe already has resurrected his fellow elder dragons, but due to the mending they have no spark. Therefore, he is going to undo the mending and cause another time spiral. Hence, the name Hour of Devastation. Once he undoes the mending, thousands of planeswalkers will be brought back to life and/or regain their spark. Including the elder dragons.
Now, you may be asking, "then what does the planar bridge have to do with this?" To understand that you have to understand the mending.
The mending is what fixed the time spiral. And what caused the time spiral was massive tears through the blind eternities to other planes. These tears were fixed by planeswalkers sacrificing their spark and/or their life to mend these tears. Why were these tears so bad? The planes on the other side of the tears were at completely different times in history than Dominaria (ex dominaria was in the 3000s and kamigawa was in the 2000). This completely rekt the space-time continuum. That's why Tezzeret wanted the planar gate so badly. It was basically a small tear through the blind eternities that could be manipulated at will.
If you really want to get deep here is the Niv-Mizzet theory.
All throughout the story of Return to Ravnica, Niv-Mizzet is trying to study planeswalkers. No one is quite sure why. Ral Zarek believes he is trying to obtain the spark so that he may have untold knowledge of all things in the multiverse. Ral Zarek is very close.
Many people believe that Niv-Mizzet was also an elder-dragon from before the mending, but was not a planeswalkers like the others were(which would explain why he survived). Niv-mizzet, being ambitious, curious, and power hungry, was jealous of the other elder dragons. Which explains why he's so obsessed with Project Lightning Bug, and is why he's constantly trying to catch planeswalkers. He doesn't want to conduct experiments on them and study them. He wants to steal their spark.
Liliana can apparently lower her body temperature due to her affinity for the dead
Also, Niv-Mizzet is easily 5,000+ years younger than Nicol Bolas which at most would make him a 2nd generation dragon. Powerful? Yes. Elder? No.
Anyway back to Almondcat. I would assume that dehydration and water plays a significant role for the planes inhabitants where water is more valuable than the gold itself.
EDIT: I thought I would post this link here. As it felt relevant for instance to the discussion of their clothing, it looks like Liliana has changed into something with less fur. Also Gideon is showing more skin and got himself some new armor.
Huh could the guy in the blue be a new walker? Kinda looks like him the key art work. Mostly guessing since they normal show the walkers on the boosters, they normally feature 5 pieces of art for the boosters, the booth shows 3 pieces of art (and looks like the survey art was indeed real art from the set) and seeing as Lilianana and Gideon are in the set, it a good guess the are the other 2.
