So why did Bolas set up the whole religion to be a one time return? Why not be like "Hey every 50 years I'll pick up the worthy and bless yall, good luck in the trials" and grab a fresh batch of Eternals whenever?
Yeah this part seems short-sighted unless it's just him covering up his tracks. Maybe he didn't want others (like a certain lithomancer) to learn how to manipulate lazotep? It's a pretty useful substance capable of mind control, necromancy, and if the name "Eternal" implies anything, could be what allows non-planeswalkers to survive the Blind Eternities.
Survival across the Blind Eternities is covered by being undead, the lazotep is for obedience and skill preservation.
I guess he could be paranoid about planeswalker hijack after he first reveals his army, though I think he's powerful enough to easily stop most attempts (like how he thoroughly ***** slaps the gatewatch).
Has anyone given any thought about this part, right after Kefnet's killed?
Hapatra screamed, and Samut and Djeru did the same, their hearts aching once again with the loss of a god. Oketra hissed with fury, firing her arrows in an act of futility.
"Mortals! Flee to the safety of the mausoleums!" Oketra cried.
Hapatra halted for a moment. What mausoleums?
I'm assuming Oketra's talking about the chambers where the infants were kept when Bolas arrived? Where Hazoret and Oketra were beaten and corrupted? Or is she talking about the deeper chambers that Nissa's seen in her dreams? Either way, Oketra pretty much screams this out of panic and terror when she realizes there's no way in hell she can beat the Scorpion God, her brother's dead, and that she's about to join him.
Where is the info on the Lazotep coming from, the art book? Because so far as I know the stories have not mentioned it at all and there has only been one card that mentioned it. So far as I've seen Lazotep just gives the eternals an appealing shade of blue. Skills and obedience and such would be from the cartouches. Also I'm pretty sure there's no evidence that walkers can take undead through the blind eternities. Inorganic=/=not living. Zombies are still organic.

From the artbook, but even there it's stated that the cartouches are for obedience and saving your memory, they are just made from lazotep, so the metal seems to have latent abilities for preserving memories, or it's just coincidence. It just makes them more durable and gives them a pretty dope look
You are right planeswalkers those days can't even transport undead, from the few times walking was described, they just became energy and walked trough the chaos of the blind eternities. Everything they carry on themselves should be part of that energy bubble everything else dies. We need to remember that Bolas put that plan into motion while he was losing his power, no walker back then could predict what he or she would be losing, so the whole problem of transporting the eternal somewhere probably was not a concern for him back then. It was most likely after he lost the ability that he needed to search for a new way to transport them, like the bridge Tezz found.

Wow, Amonkhet might truly be one of the most tragic stories of Magic. Bontu's betrayal makes sense and it was foreshadowed during her trial that she knew more then she let on and wasn't manipulated like her siblings. It also makes more sense that Bolas was able to change the structure of the gods so thoroughly now, since he had help from an insider, so to speak. And she wasn't just villainous for evils sake, but because of her nature and out of necessity: In her mind Bolas would have wiped them out either way, so getting on his good side and perhabs serving and ascending in rank under him seemed to be the "rational choice" for her.
I'm really glad that Hazoreth is free now and will survive, but damn, all of this is just so saddening.
Damn, I didn't expect Creative to make Bontu maintain the threads that kept the rest of the Gods from knowing the truth. That's cold-blooded (makes sense because croc god). Her ambition being all for naught which made it even worse. The battle descriptions were on point today. Removing the threads and letting your opponent get overwhelmed by the gravity of the truth and their mistakes is a strong play. Sad as it may be, I enjoyed the fight immensely. Two gods engaged in battle with each other is something we didn't really get in Theros (whatever fights they had in the e-book weren't even remotely close in quality to this). Both of them had some great tricks that made the fight interesting.
Bontu releasing Hazoret from the tar as a sort of silent apology before fading away got me really good. Probably the best story of Hour of Devastation so far for me.
Bontu should have considered banding with her brothers and sisters, removing their tainted leylines and using that time to plan, feigning loyalty in the meantime. Not that she would have known this, but Bolas returns now as a Post-Mending walker. Might have been worth a shot to show some loyalty to her own world and tried to take him down instead.
What's sad about the gods is how they're manifestations of the Worldsoul itself. It's the plane killing itself at his command, or in Bontu's case, desperate to serve him in hopes of simply surviving. But its fate was to die no matter what, simply because it was unfortunate enough to be useful. Still, we don't know the exact nature of the Curse of Wandering, and what the Worldsoul's view on life was exactly, despite the benevolence of its god manifestations.
So far as Bontu knew Bolas was far and beyond the most powerful entity she had ever encountered. As they said in the flashback story; no one could defeat the 8 gods of Amonkhet, until Bolas came along. She is ambition incarnate and Black as they come so of course she thought of herself first.
Stories like Amonkhet (and to a lesser extent Zendikar) make me wish we would -every once in a while- get a set dedicated to some important event in the Multiverse's past that was not portrayed in the cards yet. Like Bolas' invasion of Amonkhet, the original defeat of the Eldrazi, the collapse of the thran empire etc.
Too bad that's not reconcilable with continuity of normal expansions and supplementary sets like Commander and Conspiracy don't have enough new cards to make it work. :/
Is it possible that Bontu leaked the info about Amonkhet prior to Bolas's invasion? There are countless planes out there and somehow Bolas managed to find one that suits his purpose during short period of time post-Mending, which makes me wonder if Bontu was the inside man even earlier than that.
If this is true, Bolas might've attacked Amonkhet much earlier than 60 years (Trespasser), which forced all Gods to abandon their original cities to join together in one, where they thought eight gods stood together was enough to repel Bolas without knowing Bontu might've already provided all the info (such as Kefnet being the maintainer of Hekma).
After seeing Djeru and Samut interact with Hazoret again, I’m still sad, that they missed the opportuinity of making them both Khenra, so that the three of them could become a happy jackal family after that
Not only are we missing a Khenra legend, it would also had brought more tragic to their story, instead of friends (or lovers) they would have been twins, drifting into different lives. With that, they also missed another opportunity for a non-human walker, most of all with a race we probably won't be seeing again anytime soon.

I'm sick to goddamn death of human walkers, and especially since it was non-GW i was hoping we would get a different race. Very excited for post-Hour PW's.

Me too, even with their whole "humans relate better to humans" sentiment, we got a group of mostly humans we follow around the multiverse, so just give as all the non-humans as we follow the “humans”.
Let's hope that Ixalan delivers, because the lineup so far only got two non-human walkers with Vraska and maybe Ajani.

I'm sick to damn death with Planeswalkers, period. Where the hell was Bolas World on the short list. They crowded out Egypt to make room for his trash that we didn't get half the things we should have.
Theros gods should have been human in appearance IMO. Now it's a bit awkward having an Aonkhet pantheon with animal attributes and Theros ones, based on a human-appering pantheon, looking like fantasy races too. IDK
Tamiyo is really the gold standard for newly introduced walkers (non-human AND not from the plane we're visiting) and you would think Wizards would clue into the fact that that may be part of the reason she's super popular, rather than just give us a human girl from the new plane like they have for the past 3-4 years.
I'm sick to damn death of people *****ing about planeswalkers. Who cares if Bolas world was on the short list or not? This is the story they wanted to tell. If you don't like the story they want to tell then go write the one you want to tell. So damn entitled. The Amonkhet story has been great.

Um, did you just notice you referred to a plane theme and story? No one complained about the Amonkhet story. It's good and Bolas as Apophis is cool. But it's not pure Egypt World. It's another example of a PW taking priority over planes and other characters. Since Bolas has the power to back this up (unlike other PWs), it's not as bad, but they need not repeat this again and again as they do.
Tamiyo is neat because she's genuinely curios AND a Moonfolk from Kamigawa. It's not about apocalypse stories with her. She investigates and learns, allows things to take course.
I'm pretty sure Amonkhet was never sold as a pure Egypt World. It was clearly sold as a world with Egyptian influences (of which there are plenty within the block), but the big overarching theme of the plane was that it was shaped (even if not totally created) by Nicol Bolas. I can totally understand wanting a pure egypt plane, but I'm not sure why you seem to be upset at Amonkhet for not delivering on a story that was never promised.
(Note, I may very well be misinterpreting you're complaints, in which case I'd love for you to explain a bit more)

Planeswalkers taking precedent over planes and other characters? Its almost like planeswalkers are the main characters. Not all pf the walkers are like Tamiyo. I love her as a character but not all of them are like her. For the bedt mind you. That'd get awful boring.
