Story said hapatra was 34, twice the normal age. So 60 years ago with ~15 years for growth, one a day assuming a 365 days a year gives 16,425 eternals. Not to mention reproduction, those original children would have had to wait a while to be even be able to reproduce.
I don't know how many people started out in the city, but counting that a lot of people don't take the trials, reproduction needs to happen to keep the population going, even more give up, and just as many again are slaughtered and become mummies, I don't know that many more than one a day can even be possible with how many people are seemingly alive in the city today.
The only thing I didn't like about the story was the number of times it repeated the phrase "marauding mummies". The first time was fine, but the fifth time could have been "wandering dead" or "ravenous zombies" or... anything else, really.
It also amuses me that the elderly Hapatra (who is not yet even middle-aged in our world) likes to tell bad punny jokes, and the young initiates sigh and roll their eyes. Just like real life.

I think I read in passing either in this thread or elsewhere that the events unfolding now began a mere DAY after the arrival of the GW.
If that is true, how the hell did Ajani plan to assemble an army of Planeswalkers to combat Bolas in 24 hours?
You're right about the Amonkhet story beginning right after Aether Revolt (and a day or two before Hour of Devastation), but Ajani's plan was to meet up in a few weeks, with allies and a strategy. The rest of the Gatewatch jumped the gun.
From the Aether Revolt "Renewal" story:
"Please," he said. "Don't go to Amonkhet. Not yet. Stay here, or go find allies elsewhere. In the morning we can pick a rendezvous point. We can meet up in a few weeks' time, count our allies, compare notes, and plan our next move."

That's assuming that only one person was deemed worthy a day. We don't know the actual population, or even the size of the city. For all we know there could be millions of eternals. Do we know how many people went through per day? If it is 100 per day (100 could certainly fit on the boat), that gets you to 1 million. Do we know what percentage of the population 100 individuals is? Lets say it takes an hour for the last trial to happen, and they do 8-10 of them per day. With 15 participants, I could see 100 on average going through. I don't think there is enough information, at least that I have seen, to really actually calculate the numbers. It could be anything, and they can make it anything.

I think its been three or four days.
DAY 1: Gatewatch arrives, battles sandworms, gets to city, meets Temmet, gets quarters, sees Samut arrested
DAY 2: Gideon visits Oketra and comletes a trial, Nissa and Chandra go for walk and Nissa discovers truth, Jace and Liliana discover Razaketh and flee.
DAY 3: Gideon undertakes trial of ambition, discovers truth of Amonkhet. Nissa does Trial of Knowledge (that might have been Day 2). Samut visits Hazoret, gets taken prisoner.
DAY 4: Gatewatch Free Samut, all are captured by Hazoret and taken to arena, Djeru wins Hazoret's trial, Gideon and Samut save Djeru, the Hours begin.
Also, keep in mind that nobody knew that when they'd walk to Amonkhet, they'd arrive just a couple days before the apocalypse. Ajani had no idea that waiting would have made everything too later. Based on the information he had, his logic was sound.

I get the impression that Ajani, in a way, he knew. Maybe not how it would go down with the eternals and the second sun, but that the current Gatewatch wouldn't have enough strength to combat Nicol Bolas in such a short time. That it would be a pyrrhic victory at best, defeat was very likely, or even death in the worst case scenario.
Amonkhet was basically a nice paradise to all those that lived there, then the Gatewatch came, started things, and Bolas emerged to get rid of them. Which is fine and dandy, but why would the citizens of Amonkhet support the gatewatch against Bolas? In their perspective, it's the Gatewatch's fault for wrecking their little paradise and making Bolas destroy everything. NOthing was wrong until the Gatewatch came.
Is there any proof that that is why Bolas chose now to show up? From what I can tell (and I may be missing something), Bolas just decided to pick up his army of Eternals. If the Gatewatch sped up that plan at all, it couldn't have been by very much considering the timing of Tezz and the planar bridge. Tezzeret was given a certain number of days to get the thing working, and by the end of Aether Revolt those days were pretty much up.
I think what Pseudofate meant, is how was the GW going to make it to Amonkhet before the Hours began if they would have followed Ajani to Dominaria.
If they would have listened to him, Amonkhet would have already been destroyed by the time they arrived. Basically, it was somewhat of a good thing they ditched him, at least they can help save a few citizens and possibly Hazoret... maybe
Is it a coincidence that the Gatewatch ahowed up just before the hours began? Or is it possible that their presence alerted Bolas prompting his return? It would help explain why hes doing this now.

I think he was planning to unleash the Hours soon, as he most likey has a Planar Gate about to go online. He may have pushed up the timetable so he could wrap up the Gatewatch in the choas and throughly wreck them.
The Hours were already coming soon. The people knew that as the second sun was already near the horns. The trials were being sped up and preparations being made. That had nothing to do with the Gatewatch.
The reason they showed up was to look for Bolas and to Lily extent Razaketh.
The fact they showed up days before Bolas comes back is just Story and Plot Convenience
They thought Bolas would be there living on a world he created. They didn't expect a world overtaken and warped by Bolas.
Ajani had no idea either. He assumed regathering and ally up was necessary and then head to Amonkhet assuming the above sentence as well even if it took a couple weeks because what did it matter, Bolas would just be there.
I fear some over thinking is going on.
It's just simple plot.

Bolas taking over Amonkhet - Destroy Blue Player Kefnet first, cast all spells, take world.
Bolas killing off Amonkhet - Destroy Blue Player Jace first, cast all spells, end world.
Bolas truly playing some Elder Dragon Highlander with every pun intended.
The fact he did it this way twice makes my loss last night feel like I had it coming. I knew I shouldn't have over-extended only to get wrecked. Sigh. Always leave counter magic up...
So why did Bolas set up the whole religion to be a one time return? Why not be like "Hey every 50 years I'll pick up the worthy and bless yall, good luck in the trials" and grab a fresh batch of Eternals whenever?
