I look forward to the Magic Story every Wednesday and was disappointed today with just a rehash of what we've seen. Not even a side story like some of the better ones in SOI. The Conspiracy Take the Crown stories were pretty good too. What gives? Kaladesh has left me cold.
I share your sentiments. I look forward to magics story, and while we knew these 5 weeks wouldn't be dedicated to commander stories, today's story article is outright disappointing. Like people have said, not only does it provide us with no new information, but it also comes at an odd and not particularly useful time. I was hoping for a "Checking in with the Planeswalkers" update, we haven't gotten one this year yet, but I suppose there's still time. I guess we'll see what the next three weeks bring us. Honestly, if in the end I get a "checking in with the planeswalkers" article and a new pyrexia (preferably one that touches on urabrask), I'll be happy.
I'd prefer a new story rather than checking on the 'walkers. We've seen a Lot of different walkers the past year, either in the spotlight, minor roles, or throwaway lines. Looking at last year's article, there's maybe a handful they could meaningfully go over that haven't had any mention this year.
I too was looking forward to an Alara or New Phyrexia story, and would have enjoyed a Theros story as well.
I would laugh if they gave us a Tarkir story featuring Tiagam.
As much as I agree with everyone else here about Commander stories and this week's blurb being extremely disappointing, I kinda breathed a sigh of relief. I just don't have it in me to read a New Phyrexia story lol
Any other plane, sure. I'd love to read an Alara story since we haven't had one in forever (would also be kinda cool if they manage to tie Breya and Yidris together in a decent fashion). Wouldn't mind a story about Saskia either. Theros is meh but I'll take that too. I just don't find New Phyrexia interesting and I'm very likely to be scummed if they decide to kill off another Mirran cuz "ooh phyrexians r scary." There aren't exactly many left if we're crossing off people on the SoM legends list.
...but yeah. Weak attempt this week. Need some new content please.
While they didn't hype anything up beforehand, I drew up my expectations from last year's stories and let's just say I (along with many here as well apparently) am pretty disappointed with this year's stories. Yes, we do have about 3 weeks more, but isn't the two weeks building up to the product's release the most critical period to release Commander Stories so they function as Marketing tools as well? (And let's face it considering how much complaining us enfranchised players do about marketing, that's the one department they seldom screw up at.)
It's not absolute evidence, of course, but not having stories during this critical period does sort of raise the chance there aren't any stories either post-release and that's the main concern the time lapse is bringing.
As for the actual article this week... let's just say there's nothing new or interesting information-wise... and even as a recap it's haphazardly placed chronologically since it's not preceded and doesn't look like it will be succeeded by a Kaladesh story itself. I don't like to sound overly negative here, but they're honestly not giving chances for me not to this time...
There was that blank week during PAX where they could have posted this. And it wasn't even very good. Old planeswalkers guides used to be super in depth and usually multiple weeks long. Kinda sad. What with only getting a few weeks before the next block.
So, this is what... 3 consecutive weeks without a story. How does that happen? I have been reading these stories every week since Theros... don't ever remember a hiatus like this. Could have used one or two stories about the new commanders.... maybe another story about an Aetherborn.
Well at least they had the decency to not label under "Story", but rather "Feature".
It's more about expectations - they should've outright said there would be no stories, and I think people would've been fine with that, instead of being told "we have other plans". I know I would have. Oh well... at least MaRo has made note of our disappointment, and hopefully he'll pass it along to the right people.
People got upset that there are three consecutive weeks of no story with no official announcement to clear things up? I am so thoroughly shocked that I had a heart attack combined with intense fits of coughing.
There was time to literally give each C16 Legend a story. Instead, Kaladesh filler.
It's even worse that Kaladesh is my least favorite plane alongside Tarkir and Ravnica.
May I ask why that is? I mean Kaladesh is by far not my favorite plane (although I love the worldbuilding and technological feel behind it), but Khans-Tarkir and Ravnica? Certainly in my top five. Theros and Ravnica might share number one actually. What is it about those planes that you don't like? Really asking out of interest
I'm kinda disappointed about the storyless weeks too though. If it were at least some kind of new information, but no. Hopefully this week will be different.

Kaladesh is Steampunk India, two themes I don't care for. Ravnica and Kaladesh are neither modern-day nor ancient fantasy, but this awkward limbo between the two. In a magical fantasy game, I prefer other kinds of themed settings and worlds, like Innistrad for example. Artifice and the general aesthetic of Kaladesh and Ravnica just don't appeal at all to me and feel out of place in a Multiverse where magic is possible. Tarkir is easily the worst plane of all. It's just this horrid wasteland war world with a nauseating level of linear marketing that was just abhorrent and insulting with an overplay on testosterone, fighting, trashed landscapes, and next to nothing pleasing or redeemable about it outside of Alesha and Narset. I couldn't stand another sight of one homogenous scene of burly desiccated battleground of slaughter and flying reptiles. It's literally DudeBro world.
My favorite planes are Theros, Lorwyn, Kamigawa and pre-Eldrazi Zendikar. I love those lush, idyllic, magical realms that aren't too developed but aren't archaic either. Innistrad, with and without Avacyn is a plane I admire too, although it's not among my top favorites.

Interesting, I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum: I enjoy subversions or aversions of normal fantasy tropes much more than linear or classic fantasy. I especially love the thought of developed magical societies (as a science student I find classical fantasy societies often dull and stagnant). I instantly fell in love with Ravnica for that reason. Kaladesh is too cute in some regards for my personal taste, but I like the steampunk aspect, the aetherborn and the effect aether itself has on nature and society there. Zendikar on the other hand I found boring before the Eldrazi (and yes I know, I'm in a minority on this one). Adventure world just really doesn't do it for me. Most of what you describe of Tarkir were personified in Mardu (and to a lesser degree Temur), my least favorite aspect as well. But the rest I found fascinating, especially the cultures of Jeskai and the Abzan. Well, we both love Theros at least^^

I feel the same way, I love seeing how more modern societies would develop magic and technology. Magic I feel does a good job of making modern fantasy setting, which is nice since a lot for people are hung up on what fantasy should be and I can use magic to show how different time eras can work in a fantasy setting. It also keep the multiverse diverse.

Same here. Zendikar is pretty but to me boring af. The eldrazi added some action to a (imho) a boring generic world.

One reason I liked Tarkir as well. We clan and region where so well developed it felt like a real world setting.

“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
Favorite three are... Kamigawa, Theros, and... not sure on the third, probably Lorwyn/Shadowmoor. Those three just appeal to me the most. I love the themes they explore. Least favorite are Mirrodin, Innistrad... and not sure on the third, though I'll probably go with Dominaria since I don't have any emotional attachment to it really. Though even the places I dislike I like to some extent. Oh, could count New Phyrexia as one depending on how you view it relative to Mirrodin, and if so I absolutely can not stand Phyrexia at all. But other than New Phyrexia every plane has something I like, though some like Innistrad look to be pretty devoid of that element now.
Limiting the planes to those that have been "featured" in an expansion, and going strictly on flavor and story, my planar power rankings (note: Dominaria broken up into continents)
I'd say my top three are Ravnica, Kamigawa and Theros. Fiora is interesting enough to rank pretty highly as well, and I find some of the clans of Khans Tarkir appealing. Coming in at or close to the bottom of my list would be both Mirrodin (I never liked it enough to really care that the Phyrexians destroyed it) and New Phyrexia (Even though I find both Elesh Norn and Urabrask interesting, they just don't make up for my general dislike of New Phyrexia and Phyrexia as a whole.)
Kaladesh for me is falling somewhere in the middle. I like steampunk, and i like Kaladesh's art direction. Individually. When considered separately from each other. BUT, for me Kaladesh simply doesn't match the aesthetics of steampunk for me. The Izzet guild is far more steampunk feeling imo.

Meanwhile, Welcome to Kaladesh!
In case you didn't know yet, the world of Kaladesh is a living work of art, owing its bright existence to the tangible presence of aether. Aether is the raw magical energy that inhabits the space between planes in the Multiverse. While it's nominally present on many planes, on Kaladesh it's a critical part of the ecosystem. The life-giving energy infuses the natural world, sculpting the earth and waterways, drawing trees and plants into delicate twisting patterns, and attracting wild creatures like a magnetic force.
We hope this absolutely new, clearly non-repetitive description of the plane for the fifth time satisfies all of your questions and concerns!

Vorthos-player with way too much time on his hands and a love of thematic decks.
EDH - Yes, Each One is Named After a Song. I love tying music to my decks.
My top 3: Theros, Kamigawa, Lorwyn in that order. Honorable mention: Zendikar
My least favorites: Mirrodin/NewPhyrexia, Kaladesh, Tarkir. Dishonorable mention: Ravnica.

Kaladesh isn't meant to be strictly steampunk though, that's why they called it aetherpunk. It's meant to have elements of it, but not quite the same thing.
There was time to literally give each C16 Legend a story. Instead, Kaladesh filler.

The Mardu lived in a wasteland and were constantly at war, but that's because they're based on the Mongols, who are famous for attacking and defeating numerous different empires. This is why they were at war with pretty much all of the other clans constantly. The other clans were still at war, but they had other important aspects of their culture which you are overlooking. The point of a faction set is so that people can identify with whichever faction they like the most. Some people like wastelands and warfare, so they like the Mardu. If you don't, you can choose a different clan. In my opinion, each clan did a good job of capturing the real-world empire that it was based on while also feeling unique compared to other worlds (exclusive or rarely-used races like the naga, rakshasa, djinn, and efreet helped with that).
Also, you may have noticed that there is a lot of fighting in this game. 99% of games in magic are won by killing one or more opponents. Most planes have a storyline that is based on fighting, and those that don't still have some kind of conflict. Tarkir is hardly the first time that warfare had a major role in the storyline. And it does a good job of reflecting reality, too. As I said, the Mongols (Mardu) invaded other empires (other clans) so those empires defended themselves. Those empires would also fight each other for various reasons. Tarkir is among the most realistic planes, yet still retains plenty of fantasy elements.
I can understand disliking new Tarkir. In my opinion, it put way too much focus on dragons and watered down the cultures and non-dragon creature types from the original Tarkir. The only redeeming quality was all of the comparative future/past or KTK/DTK cards. But I think that the original Tarkir was a well-designed world and you shouldn't dismiss simply for having warfare. Instead of deciding to dislike it because there's a lot of fighting (which, again, is fairly common in magic), look past that for the flavorful, historical, and cultural elements of the clans.
I don't think that it was that there was fighting, it was how much fighting there was. Every place has fighting. But with Tarkir one of the major elements of it is the constant fighting. Innistrad, for instance, is not defined by war. There certainly is war and conflict in general, but it's defined as gothic horror. Zendikar as adventure world, so on and so forth. Tarkir? It's defined by war in part. There are other elements, but it's a major element of Tarkir, nothing wrong with people disliking it for that reason. It's much like it wouldn't be odd to dislike Theros because of the Nyx element woven in.
