I dig the flavor of the passing of the torch. From the old school, big nose, hand painted prodigal sorcerer to the slick, pretty boy reprint we're getting in Eternal Masters.
Still would have rather just had the old art in the new set, but I liked the story.
Really, so much here. In one story, we learn that Dominaria has recovered enough to support noble families in pursuit of fame and fortune, certainly post-post apocalypse. We learn that Portal Second Age takes place AFTER Time Spiral, as the cannons used by the Talas pirates are described as fancy new weapons and initially mistaken by the pov character for magic, while the Talas themselves are a familiar peril. A spell creates a skyship based on Weatherlight, though clearly without planeshifting capabilities and likely much smaller. Just wow. I also like the wilder, more dangerous side of blue, with storms and sea monsters and pirates and offensive practical magic and the freedom and peril of sea and sky all standing in contrast to the Jacier elements of the color, and reminding you why the basic land for blue is and island.

Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
Enthril telling Boldt not to use trinkets to use magic feels analogus to Luke using the force, not his X-Wing scanner, to aim and fire the photon torpedo.

That ain't no pretty boy tbh. To each his own I suppose. I'll take them FINE men of Vryn any day. Delicious.
I was actually wondering, how do we know this is Dominaria post time spiral? I'd like it to be since it would be cool if it had recovered, but I didn't see anything to suggest that this wasn't a story set back in the day

In comparison it seems fair to call one Sorcerer a pretty boy, though I don't think they are too much pretty boys either.

Because of Tolaria West. Tolaria West was founded 300 years after the Phyrexian invasion, around the time that Teferi returned to Dominaria when Shiv phased back in and began participating in the events of Time Spiral block. Given the main character was a noble concerned with fame and fortune rather than surviving the apocalypse, and the old mage talks about how HE was concerned with fame and fortune when he was young, its safe to assume that Dominaria is not currently experiencing or recovering from an apocalypse like the time rifts. As Tolaria West was founded during Time Spiral, and this story takes place during a time when Dominaria does not seem to be a post apocalyptic wasteland and features a character traveling to Tolaria West, it must take place on Dominaria after it has recovered from the Time Spiral block.

Great story. I had Tolaria West confused with Tolarian Academy for a while. Would have been cool to get a story from that far back, but oh well. I can't believe that they used that leviathan from Theros as the art though.

Cool thanks! Like Tanukimo I didn't know there was a difference between the original Tolarian Academy and Tolaria West, what I get for only reading summaries of the Time Spiral Novels

Well, to be fair, Tolaria was known to dabble in timetravel.
I feel like I have to (slightly) disagree with everyone's sentiment of OMG DOMINARIA NOSTALGIA. I mean, I suppose it's nice... in a way, to have Dominaria still featured, but what rubs me the wrong way is that none of the namedrops mean anything. You could have changed the names of the cultures and places and nobody would ever know it was Dominaria. It was grafted on top with the single purpose of fanservice. It could have been literally any plane. Infact, at the start I was kind of excited that we might finally get a glimpse into an ocean world plane. If they want the reference to Dominaria to mean anything, they should at least mention stuff that makes Dominaria unique. Nobody can tell a story about Kamigawa without the Kami, a story about Ravnica without the guilds or a story about Tarkir without the clans/broods. Similarly, you can't write a story about Dominaria without mentioning either the invasion and time spiral crisis itself or at least how these events have shaped the cultures that emerged from the rubble. Such cataclysmic events should have very lasting and very real effects on any civilization that forms after them.
Well wow, this rant is disproportionally big to how much I care about it, but I personally would have prefered a glimpse to a new plane rather than a story set in a generic setting with some Dominaria namedrops.

I do not think at all that it means what you suggest. If you mean this quote:
From the pirates, a double boom sounded—a heartbeat of iron and thunder. In an instant, he saw them: two cannonballs linked by a chain of crackling energy, spinning around each other like a bolo, so fast he could barely make them out. What make of magic was this?
I think that he is familiar with cannons, he is just wondering how they made a ultra-fast cannonball bola with a lightning chain.
The story was great. Reminds me of The Gathering Dark and the description how the Dominarian people just started to learn to use magic and mana.

That's a good point, I originally missed the part about the lightning.

The old sorcerer seems to have cast a spell (with Boldt's magical energy as well) to combine all the flotsam into an airship.
Also, from a mechanical perspective, Pirate Ship should make quick work of a Prodigal Sorcerer...
