Crossing my fingers for a story centered around Tezzeret.
Tezzeret has had what...one line so far? This is such a tease, I want more of Tezzeret
I wouldn't mind a chapter centered around Ajani. That would also be cool.
I think it's more likely to be Ajani than Tezzeret today. Maybe next week for Tezzeret, since it's the article about the arena battle? Or the one after, for sure.
I'm hoping we'll hear more from Tezzeret in Aether Revolt, when they reveal what he's actually doing on Kaladesh.
While we're on the topic of Ajani, would you be bothered if Ajani found the Gatewatch via Tamiyo?
I don't mind Dovin Baan showing up because he has heard of the Gatewatch through Tamiyo but the multiverse is supposed to be infinite. The odds of Tamiyo actually running into two
planeswalkers in such a small amount of time and sending them to Ravnica are a bit slim. This was a great idea for the first time but I don't think that it would be too good to use
it for bringing more planeswalkers to Ravnica.
I hope that I'm wrong and that they make an awesome intro for Ajani
It would be awfully coincidental, for sure.
And I do mean awful. I think SOI as a whole was too full of Coincidences to begin with, I'd rather not continue that trend.
Tamiyo's a U mage, port to a plane and just feel for someone youve mind linked to before. ::waves magic hands:: poof Ajani gets a mental dump of the gate arches existence and locale.
Eh I dunno, would make her incredible OP compared to Jace and professor X levels of broken, but maybe she already had a mass message system set up. She is quite strong after all given that she went toe to toe with avacyn, was the only walker with the tools strong enough for emrakul to distort to win the battle, and kept her head in straight through the madness when Jace succumbed. She's pretty much batting 1000 in my book right now, a mass text seems doable.
This entire chapter confused me. Can anyone explain at which point in the timeline is the Ajani on Kamigawa taking place and what was going on with Tezzeret at that time?
It looks like six months ago Ajani went to Tamiyo's at some point after Elspeth's death on Theros, shortly before Tamiyo returned to Innistrad. There we learn that the events of Scars happened about two years prior and Agents of Artifice a year before that.
Five months ago, Ajani finds that Tezzeret is on Kaladesh and goes there, where he meets Mrs. Pashrir and she lets him crash on her couch.

So Ajani goes to visit Tamiyo but at this point Narset is also a planeswalker. Tezzeret and friends are burning villages in Kamigawa until Tezz gets killed and his body is claimed by Bolas. Then Tezz comes backs, kills some more folks and pisses Ajani off who then goes to Kaladesh to find him...and all of this is happening between OGW and SOI? That is not how I recall the timeline.
Weird.
Then again it was a quick read...
Narset has technically been a walker for an indeterminate number of years, because Sarky broke time so we're in a new timeline where that has always been the case. Her story never spelled out when she gained her spark, just that she gained one.
We also know that Dovin Baan is a part of Tamiyo's walker network, so information can flow both ways. He can be informed of the Gatewatch, and she can be informed of Head Judge Tezzy.
It's also hard to put the events pre-gatewatch into a properly defined pattern because hopping from plane to plane with no real connection to the other planes meant many events could be concurrent to each other. And we wouldn't know because we can't even tell if all planes have a 1:1 time ratio to them, or how long a day is, or how long a year is. We can assume Tamiyo uses a year system that is universal cause she might think of that, but even then that's an if.

No, Tezzeret burned the Nuzmui village three years ago, before the events of Scars of Mirodin. Given that Ajani goes to Kamigawa sometime after the events of Theros and here we learn that Narset has visited Tamiyo we can infer that Theros and Tarkir happen concurrently.
I was pleasantly surprised by the way it turned out. The coincidences are still there, but there's a long rational explanation for why Ajani is on Kaladesh.
"She was born in a place of darkness," the giant said. "She never spoke of it much. A land devoured by evil, ruled by monstrous creatures. The kind that don't kill. The kind that make you their own. They hurt her until she was part of the way they hurt others. She held on, cried, and dreamed. Until the day they came for her. She was in their claws when she wished herself away."

Ajani is on Kamigawa just before SOI, but after Theros.

Thoughts on what the bolded section means?
We already knew Elspeth had become the one who picks whose next before her spark ignited, it's why she is always full of regret.

I'll be honest I think this was the best story of the set right here. Well written, easy to read, cool duel narrative between past and present. This story gave us the current plot while also filling in and connecting a lot of background information. We know Narset is a part of the gossip network, we got closure on the Elspeth/Ajani story line, we got shout-outs to Agents of artifice and we got Ajani being the awesome character that he is.
Lastly, god DAM Tamiyo is awesome. A return to Kamigawa block is justified just to get a story where she's the main character.

I was never able to get into the novels, but speaking strictly of the storytelling they've been doing on the mothership: this is probably one of the top stories ever.
Stories and teatime with Tamiyo? Adopting orphaned rat children? Ajani doing his best brooding superhero on the rooftops schtick and not to mention Shadowblayde?!
They packed a lot into this and I don't know how future stories can top this.
I know the Kamigawa sets did poorly, but with this creative team in charge I think a return set could really be something awesome.
This is legitimately the beat Magic story I've ever read. The writing by itself was just so enjoyable to read. The way the author uses metaphors so eloquently was just refreshing and enthralling.
"Walk behind the air" is also the coolest metaphor I've ever heard.
I agree I rather like todays story and happy to see some of my favorite characters seeming all know each other
I also like how Ajani talking about the "the mentor dies" step in the hero's journey.

“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
The writing was confusing though, at least fo me, since I am not a native english speaker. I don't usually read the spanish version, because there are some subtleties in the english version that are lost in translation, but I had to, because I kept trying to figure out wht they were saying.
Everyone who had trouble reading is probably having issue with the style of third person going on. It's specific in that we're clearly getting Ajani's perspective (during the Kaladesh stuff) but vague in that almost nothing describes Ajani by name through most of the story. Which is a very awkward place to write without a blank unimportant pov character.
And while there were visual cues for when we returned to the Kaladesh plot, there were no banners to mark the change (like the 'six months ago' banner to mark being on Kamigawa). So I can get people having issue with it, but I also can't see a more interesting and intricate way to write this one.
I thought it was great. I would have preferred a bit less mystery in the beginning so that I didn't think Ajani was some kind of self-aware construct, but I like how it was nicely paralleled by us not knowing the kid was a Nezumi.
I can't wait for Ajani vs. Gideon sparring matches. A warrior who loves to fight but has forsworn killing, against someone who can't die? Seems good.
My main takeaways:
1. Were all of Tamiyo's kids adopted? I don't think I've ever seen any other children of Planeswalkers before. It also adds a nice depth to her, as so many of the rest of them are only portrayed as their jobs.
2. As soon as I read the invention story last month, I totally was on the mechanical portal travel kick. The question is if Tezz is doing it FOR Bolas, or as a way to fight him?
2a. Based on Dovin Baan's characterization thus far, I come down on the side of him being a dupe instead of a willing accomplice. The question is how he will react when he finds it all out.
3. Mad speculation: perhaps the reason Elspeth was always covered up was that she was partially Compleated? Which might provide both a way for her to escape Erebos, and a future block when she's not controlling her body and oil escapes to corrupt Theros.. (God of Phyrexia in the pantheon would be amazing)
This is what concerned me about this story. The idea that Tamiyo knows Narset, and now Ajani, let alone having met the Gatewatch. There are supposed to be so many planes out there, and while the story could pull some focus, I feel like they're underselling its size but networking so many of these PWs already.
Probably but I'm sure that taking anything good that showed up WAS his plan and the fact that a teleporter is amongst them is pretty pleasing to him.
I'm hoping we'll hear more from Tezzeret in Aether Revolt, when they reveal what he's actually doing on Kaladesh.
