Yawgmoth is a god given brilliant researcher and probably one of the smartest characters ever to grace mtg story. He isn't some random on a random plane which had accidentally stumbled upon the technology that can allow you to travel from plane to plane.
Yawgmoth is absolutely a random person on a random plane. Everybody is.
Also this wasn't "stumbled across" by any stretch of the imagination, nor, as has been mentioned is it a planar portal.
You can't honestly believe that a random had discovered but other genius characters like Niv Mizzet or Jin-Gitaxias haven't. That's just stupid.
Niv Mizzet and Jin-Gitaxis don't have access to aether or to centuries of Kaladeshish research and development in magictech. Not to mention that brilliant insights can totally come from apparently random people, like say a patent clerk or a dirt poor kid from the slums of Madras.
I liked this story quite a bit. The portal invention certainly could help elevate the block from 'Chandra works out her childhood issues' to something that actually should involve the Gatewatch.
Some thoughts on the previous comments:
1. I am definitely thinking that the invention is not 'random' at all. Most likely a planeswalker (Tezz is my guess) was trying to figure it out and seeded the idea into some of the better inventors. Kind of reminds me of the plot of 'Real Genius' from the 80s (if the reference isn't that obscure).
2. This kind of concept (only inorganic matter will work) isn't new ground by any means. The standard way writers get around it is by using a container of some kind so that the organic matter is protected. Didn't read a lot of the old novels, but wasn't that how the Weatherlight worked? I assume people couldn't be up on the deck in lounge chairs when the ship hopped planes...
To be fair many things that where invented in our real where histories that change our ways of living where accidents. Penicillin for example, as well as potato chips. And Rashmi (if we are discussing characters it is somewhat standard to use their names, especially since she is gonna be a card) isn't trying to make a device for planar travel, she making a telaportion device and blinking a vase is a whole lot different from traveling, even pointing out Rashmi can only send inorganic things. I don't think she will be the one to invent portals.
And Niv "has" discovered planeswalkers already, Ral and Jace actively sabotaged Niv to keep him from delving into it. And while the canon is a little hard to know at this point, in the first Ravnica the Boros did try to build a planar traveling ship (and failed) so I would be a good guess to think Niv is aware of other worlds and might just not be interested in traveling them.
Jin_Gitaxias and the other praetors are trying to reverse engine Menarchs soul traps but its unknown how far they gotten since they entered into somewhat of a civil war.

No. Nothing is confirmed about any of these characters. But Baan is definitely not Red. He reads about as far from Red as one can get. He's definitely Blue and is possibly white.

Niv Mizzet already knows that planeswalkers exist and, thus, that other planes exist as well. As 5colors had mentioned, Boros had tried to make a planar traveling ship and failed. Niv might not be interested in researching other planes but that would be extremely uncharacteristic of him considering the fact that he has taken interested in planeswalkers. Niv is already portrayed as one of the smartest beings alive. The idea that he can't create a planar portal but some random can is silly. Niv doesn't have access to centuries of research and development? Niv is 15,000 years old. Imagine the things that he had already discovered and the research that he had already done. Also, according to our own wikia, Niv Mizzet is apparently omniscient (somehow).
Based upon the story Project Lightning Bug, Niv does not know of the existence of Planeswalkers, though he may be close to finding out.
Yawgmoth didnt invent it, the dude that was going to become a planeswalker and the head artificier of the Thran the most technologically advanced civilization in Dominaria did.
Cant remember his name but his soul/spark was stuck in the powerstone that would be shattered and form Urzas eyes.
Wizards has chosen filling quotas to appease Tumblr over good story telling for quite a bit so the story hasn't been interesting for ages.
He's definitely not Blue/Red. I could see him being any other Blue centered dual color, or even Bant, Esper, or Sultai, before him having any Red, it's his weakest color combination. Given we just had Tamiyo I doubt he'd be Bant if he goes tricolor, but Dimir, Azorius, or Simic still seem like possible dual color combos. I personally think he's most likely White/Blue, that just seems like the cleanest combo for him, and he really doesn't seem to have much obvious Black elements, but that could change.
New card spoiled Legendary Land called "Inventors' Fair". Speculation but I'm thinking there's probably some kind of festival that's a part of the story. It has metalcraft so maybe this festival has something do with artifacts?
@Adjuk: First, Yawgmoth was smart but a biologist not an engineer. He would leave an outline of what he needed for Glacian to design while Glacian was incoherent.
Second, Rashmi isn't some random. She could be everything, for all we know right now. She also lives on a plane with an unusually high amount of Aether, which likely indicates a weaker planar barrier, making the discovery easier.

Ha, funny joke! And what's next? Some random gadgeteer genius elf is gonna make a matter transporter?
Looks like we already got event 1/5 with last weeks story, 2/5 will be in episode 4 and the last three will be in the last three stories.

Kind of hoping Dovin will be Esper colors. Comes across as very cold and calculating and feels like he hits notes of all three Esper colors in the "Homesick" story.

That's nice, I'm glad we are getting the story cards very explicitly spelled out. I wonder if we will see the story cards before the story is aired though. I doubt it though, just kind of curious since it seems pretty different.

Blue, obviously. White, yeah. But in what way does he seem black?
A lot of people seem to be speculating him as UB or WUB, and I just don't understand it. If someone could just explain why they think he's B, I could maybe come around to it. As is, I just can't see it.
Ok, with this new land counteracting life paid I definitely see the phyrexians or at least phyrexian themed stuff coming back. Keep in mind I'm solely basing that on its synergy with phyrexian assault. And it helping you regain the life that you paid to play it. That and the phyrexian mana allowing you to pay life in lieu of paying mana to put stuff in play. As I suspected though, the affinity commander decks out there just got a bunch of help and more is soon to be spoiled.

The only reason I can see I box checking. People are hyped up on Sarkhan and Tamiyo and now want more three color walkers. So they're projecting black qualities or at least exaggerating certain aspects until they look black so they can have an Esper walker.
So a few thoughts about the stories we've gotten so far:
I've really liked them, I think it's clever that they managed to pepper details about the world and story throughout naratives that stand alone. Although none of these points were the focus of the story, we got a tremendous amount of world-building for Kaladesh in just one UR this past wednesday. Also, in homesick, Dovin said the officer who hunted down Chandra was reprimanded, meaning Baral survived his burning in Chandra's Ignition I think most of us expected this but it's nice to have confirmation that Baral is still around.
Last, I know we're still early in the story but is anybody else getting the feeling that the Consuls really aren't that bad? I know Baral was terrible and Chandra is allegedly going to be involved in a rebellion but Dovin mentions that Baral was part of a previous administration, and even in that one his actions were viewed as extreme. Everything we've seen of the Consuls and what they are trying to accomplish in Kaladesh has seemed positive and benign. It has me wondering if in this block Chandra will play a similar role to Sarkhan in Tarkir. Making the world better in their point of view, but making the world worse for everyone who actually lives on the plane. (This is just my opinion, I know some people feel DTK is a better timeline than KTK). Regardless, and I'll freely admit this may be the white mage inside me speaking, the Consuls as they have been portrayed so far seem pretty chill.

Well a random genius on a plane filled with genius inventors.
And its not a planar portal yet. Saheeli just seems to suspect that it might have something to do with the Blind Eternities.
(Not to mention that its possible this whole thing was just setup for the storyline and the teleporter might be irrelevant for all we know.)

It seems very unlikely that Dovin is UR based on both his personality and the fact that there's some evidence that Saheeli will be UR.
maube UW then?
what are people expecting him to be?

Kind of weird actually.
Personality wise is he clearly White/Blue as far as we know, but the artwork seems to imply either Blue/Red or Blue/Black
