So I wonder if this story is just for setting up Kaladesh and the Inventors Fair or if this teleportation device is going to trigger the plot in some way. Saheeli seems concerned about it interacting with the Blind Eternities. Maybe it lets something else in? Phyrexians?
I don't think the teleporter is the concern for this particular story line. I think this was an attempt to set up some foreshadowing for the return (and with how confident MaRo is in the set, I have no doubt they're planning to return). That said, how much organic matter is in your average Phyrexian? Would that even work?

Most likely it's going to leave some aether signature that the Progress Engine will pick up or something.
I mean, have you ever wondered why the Black side of Kaladesh hasn't still been shown, while we have a more clear idea of the other colours' influences?
That's what they say. A cup of oil just sitting there probably isn't going to do much though?
Oh gosh, I just got the image of a Phyrexianized teleporter, and an organic thing like that sounds awful.
Memnarch got corrupted by a single drop of the Glistening Oil, which is what caused Argentum to turn into Mirrodin and then subsequently into New Phyrexia.
Memnarch was also a metal construct in charge of the plane. I don't know enough about Phyrexia to say what the oil does to purely organic matter, though, or how it corrupts and spreads.
My point was just that it seems difficult for a matter transmitter that cannot affect organic material (for now) to transfer just a puddle of the stuff, so it needs to be in a container, but if that container doesn't break on any artifacts, sapient or otherwise, I don't know how much of a problem it would cause.

It seems unlikely you could throw a bucket of glistening oil out a window on Kaladesh and not hit an artifact.
This story scares me. Phyrexia cometh! Not now perhaps but I would be unsurprised if it did not shape the next block.
It would be ironic if Saheeli later met her friend, her friend now Phyrexized and having to deal with the guilt...

Wizards. listen. The Vorthos community will await the consequences of the Eldrazi Titans' deaths/sealing. We will keep the watch.

True. I was thinking more long-term. "If Phyrexia gets this, then how can they use it" kind of thing. Which is why I questioned your standard Phyrexian's Organic level.

Ah, yes, I was thinking that if (as Saheeli seems to suspect) these portals can be made to work across planes then Phyrexia could use it to spread by just randomly sending oil to lots of other worlds. Though I'm not clear what makes this telportation much different from something like teleportal.

Probably the use of aether, instead of mana other teleport spells and artifacts use.
Not completely artifact related but one of his abilities did allow you to take control of an artifact that I would like to see a new take on is dack fayden. Based on what I've seen as the theme of the set especially in what seems to be a strong ur color scheme he would fit perfectly. I could definitely see him becoming the commander in a ur anti affinity deck with all the artifacts coming out that will inevitably make that deck stronger. Also a new take on nicol bolas would be nice and potentially some link back to urza even though he's long gone. And I definitely can see a pretty strong phyrexian influence on the set and the phyrexian mana symbol making a comeback.

I was thinking the same. The fact that aether is involved could mean that it's easier to adapt the technology to inter-planar travel.

We already have Saheeli for Blue/Red, as well as Chandra for Red and probably Dovin for some sort of Blue. It makes me doubt Dack or Bolas, just too much Blue/Red.

My theory is that it works the same as planeswalking; the ring transports the target to the Blind Eternities, but then sends it back to the same plane. That's why organic matte can't be teleported; only beings with the Spark can survive the Eternities.
I'm just going to call it now, that mysterious head judge is more than likely Tezzeret and he'll be stealing the portal technology to bring Phyrexian to somewhere.
Well, Tezzeret would be a good way to segue to see what Nicol Bolas is doing in the next set. From the previous story I though it would be pretty lame if the set up for every block starts with some planeswalker going to the "hall of jacetus" on Ravnica to ask for help.
I was waiting for them to reveal that the vase was made out of silver at some point in the short story. No dice.
Why would it be made of silver?
To put it extremely generally, in the MtG universe, silver is the only thing that can successfully time travel.
What I figured you meant. Two issues with that. One of which is that it's not the only way to time travel, look at Sarkhan. The gist I got of things was each plane might have different rules. But the bigger issue is that they don't want to do time travel stories often, we just had Tarkir.
Ok, so previously I was hoping that when the Homesick story said that Lili and Chandra planeswalked, they went somewhere else instead of Kaladesh, which, for me, would have made a more interesting story of Gideon and Nissa accidentally getting tangled in Kaladesh while looking for their friend who's somewhere else.... but then I found out there have been several tidbits (including an image of Chandra leading some revolution or sorts) where Chandra is totally in Kaladesh (and that her Kaladesh card would be named Torch of Defiance).
Feeling pretty bummed here; And here I was feeling happily riled up by Homesick, and now the story looks set to be relatively boring and predictable (Chandra vs Baan whatsoever).....
Also the Simic vedalken thanks to biomancy
Well, A Simic Vedalken, and presumably a small amount of others. We haven't seen any four-armed Vedalken on Ravnica since Momir Vig.
All that it takes is a bit of oil, right?

Still, what is Liliana doing there then?
