Hey guys! Lantern here. I wanted to stop by here and let you all know this is something I've been working on, along with Jay13x. Jay has been kind enough to really encourage this project from the start, as well as fact checking and editing the script, so I really wanted to give him a shout out.
I noticed there was a distinct lack of MTGlore that wasn't written. Outside from the trailers we get, there really isn't very much youtube presence for magic except for Spike Pros. I really thought that was a shame for a game that's as flavorful as magic and more story focused than its ever been. While I'm sure some of you guys are probably may better at lore than I (cough, cough, Jay) with my career in screen writing and video editing, I wanted to do something to change that. So I've made a huge effort on these next four videos. The first is a sorta, guide to Innistrad, and the latter 3 is a old time radio show retelling of the events that happened. The idea is to make it a great starting place for people to jump into magic lore. Hopefully it creates an even wider community than we have now.
I'm not sure if I will keep going with my weekly videos until I can this is accepted. I have to cut time away from paid work for it, so I'll have to make that call after the next 3 videos, but I'd really like to. If it ends up taking off, I'll probably cut more than before, and try to make this into a full time gig. Start working with Planeswalker bios, one shot stories, community made stories, lore fast facts, podcasting, ect. But I want to be clear, I'm doing this for the Vorthos. I want to keep you in the loop and I want to work with you all, to give us content we deserve.
That's why I asked Jay for help before even starting this, and that's why I'm posting this here. My narration skills in the video are rusty which is only going to get better with confidence and experience, so I'm aware and working on it. Some of my pronunciations are off, which I've been making a list of and catching for next time, and some of my jokes threw off my pacing, another fact I'm looking into tweaking and have some ideas about. But overall the content has been getting praised, and I'm pretty proud of that.
But I want your feed back too. I want to hopefully make this channel a place that you can tell your friends who maybe aren't super into lore to just listen to, so that they can know the lore too. What do you guys think? Questions? Advice? Things you wanna see? I'm all ears guys.
Hey man, as an amateur writer, I know the importance of feedback for content creators. It really is what keeps you doing stuff. So here is mine:
Strong Points of your video:
- I think the script was concise and well-written, you touched on multiple aspects of the plane without making it feel too crowded, which is great.
- The video editing was very good, and I like most of the image choices and the way the card pictures blend with what you're saying. I think you could also use more of the 'moving images' that I assume come from the Magic trailers (as long as you don't run into copyright claims, which I bet you will in the future if this works).
- Your citations of things outside the Magic Lore is very interesting, and you probably should invest more into that. You mentioned Dracula and Frankestein, maybe you could explain what sort of inspirations they give to the set (Stensia is actually the way it is because Dracula comes from the Carpathian Mountains). You could have talked about lots of other sources, like how delver of secrets is obviously based on Kafka's The Transformation and civilized scholar is a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde analog.
Weak Points of your video:
- Most if not all of your jokes fall flat, really. If if I were you I would drop the jokes altogether, I really don't think you need humor all the time to make great things, but if you feel that is absolutely necessary, I would change the way you're doing it.
- Sometimes you were talking (specially during jokes) and you would low your voice down substantially to the point it was hard to hear you. You should pay attention to that and try to avoid that.
All that said, I want to say two more things for you:
You mentioned Edgar Markov with a recently released picture of a vampire that we don't know the identity yet. Most people here seem to think that he is actually Runo Stromkirk, not Edgar.
There is a channel on youtube called "Comics Explained". Pick up any video from it and see how the guy explains things there. I think he does an amazing job (he also has another channel where he explains other stuff, but I saw more videos of this channel of him). He has a very natural and clear way of transmitting information. Maybe watching it could help you as well.

Of course, feed back is always appreciated. I want to give the best product I can to you all. If you don't mind me breaking it down one by one, I just wanna make short I touch all your points. Thank you, I took alot of care to try and give a full big picture and sprinkle in tiny details without muddying the whole thing. As far as editing goes, yeah, along with writing, those are my strong suits since I have training in both. You should see my next one in terms of editing, I did something very simple but very cool.
As far as copy write goes, I Should be covered by creative commons clause (copywrite 1985 I believe, but don't quote me on it.) by using it for "teaching/news" means, which means I can get an exception. Its what Comicstorian (the youtuber you were actually talking about.) does. I more or less copied his intro for that reason, though I know Hasbro is court trigger happy, so I'm likely going to just put a open slate about the WHOLE copy write I'm using to make it clear I should be in the fine. Even then, well see. It would be smarter not to try and C&D me, since I'm giving them free advertisement. Hasbro law though is a little stuck in the past. Its an issue I'm worried about, but since people can do deck tecks, and lore reviews using the same images I am, I "should" be fine.
I might as far as talking outside influences, but likely it would be in "future" videos that I have no current plans. Until I can assess if this will have a big enough following for me to justify taking time off work, I can't do stuff like that. Right now I have the 3 dramatic retellings and the know your Plane videos. Id love to do a ton of new segements like fan readings, podcasting, walker bios, and real life vs magic, but its a long term goal.
I want to keep some humor but the overwheling responce has been not to let it drag the pace down. So likely the humor (which is only in know your plane. The retellings are 100% serious unless a comical character talks like gisa) will be turned into pictures like sorin off the side coming in with a text bubble.
The voice thing is a new comment. I'll look into it. truthfully theres pauses and odd phrasing, but thats coming out a little with nerves and rusty public speaking. It gets better with time.
The picture, yeah maybe. Had to put the video out, and had no clue when, and if well get that info. Just went with a source that seemed likely. Should the info come otherwise, I'll add an annotation.
Comicstorian is his channel, comics explained is a segment he produces. He was the inspiration for me.
I mentioned the copyright claim because youtube is famous for having this sort of problem, even with people that have the law on their side. The only things I would add is: (1) vorthos are people who like stories, and probably they will be your target audience. I know it is complicated, but doing quick searchs for the original references of thing is a good thing. Theros is another such plane full of mythology references that would be a shame to have a segment one without making a contrast on what the cards were based upon, (2) the name of the channel that I was talking about is Comics Explained. Comicstorian is another channel, I didn't even know it existed.

Oh jeez. My fault. He used to do segments called comic explained. But he stopped using the name, guess I know why now. but cool! That's another dude to look at. I have no problem with doing deep dives. Its probably a good idea if the series keeps going, being like a "Magic vs the real world." Hell if possible, I'd love to travel and do that as well sometime. That would be very cool.
Theros was a plane I brought up on youtube I believe? I'll be going out of my way to getting a pronunciations for different planes from here on, by asking people who I know are from the real world sides to pronounce them for me. I'll likely publicize the guide I'm using too. This would be big for places like shadowmoor.
And yeah, its less of a thing now than it used to be, but Hasbo still is a bit trigger happy with it. Its a worry, but I'll keep going since as far as I know I am not breaking any laws her. If they C&D I'll deal with it likely just announcing the letter and stopping. I hope that doesnt happen.
