I def enjoyed the story, all the Walkers felt right and read well, even Nissa.
The one part, for me, that didn't sit well was Ugin. Most story speculation did have him coming back to say 'What did you DO!' and all that, so it just fell flat when it happened. I guess I wanted more action from him, rather than just doing research before the battle and now More research afterwards. I just don't want him to become like Bolas: Powerful, but stays on the sidelines and only shows up to give cryptic statements and dash away again.
I really liked this one. I agree that Ugin's return was a bit lame, but I liked the rest of the characterization. And the handoff to Shadows actually felt pretty organic comparatively.
Oh, and I absolutely expected Chandra and Nissa to start making out there for a second. At least a hand-holding or something...
I assume that we'll cover Kiora next, but..
If I had a direct line to the writing staff, I would Mind Control them all into writing the next story from Emrakul's perspective. There are so many awesome elements that could be worked in: totally alien perspective, Eldrazi importance to the multiverse/origins, realizations of mortality for the first time, possible desire for revenge for destruction of siblings/children/whatever, etc... And then end it with a voice reaching out to it in the Blind Eternities.. "My name is Nicol Bolas..."
The story was alright, though I have a question. Why did Nissa take all night to dig four holes in the ground? She probably started around midnight and Chandra starts chatting with her around dawn.
I think we're done with Zendikar, and Kiora, for a while. Her mission is accomplished and she has no reason to leave Zendikar again. So I reckon she will be stuck on her homeplane - and the bench, just like Sarkhan & Narset, Domri & Ral, and K.O.T.H.
I believe this is also why we get no Kiora inthe Gatewatch. She really doesn't care about any other plane other than Zendikar. The threat of Emrakul coming back might spur her into some multiplanar action, but that's about what it would take.
Some good information. Emrakul is certainly gone. Ugin appears and confirms potential repercussions, which gives a small hint of promise to the otherwise ridiculous notion of defeating the Eldrazi.
I did not like that Zendikar did not consume the titan's power, as it was originally set to do. There are still voids of negative space? How can the plane ever recover its lost mana now? How can it becomes the vast, lush Adventure World it once was? The story even set things up to be that way, but it didn't happen... I'm confused. Why bother going to the outrageous trouble of saving Zendikar at the cost of killing the Eldrazi from a creative perspective if it's still the damaged old husk of the world it once was? Was the only benefit of killing off major cosmic villains really *just* to give the Gatewatch a first win? Zendikar should have drained the titans, and begun to recover. I see no reason why this was not the case.
Story was well written but it didn't tie up enough loose ends.
BFZ. Expected Adventure World, got Eldrazi Ruins. Expected a focus on defeating the Eldrazi, got the Gatewatch instead. Both of which could be pluses, but instead deterred the focus of the story.
Oh well - next week had better be Ugin going "WTF did you just do?!"
"What have you done?" bellowed the spirit dragon.
Yeah - I'm pretty much mollified Actually, I really enjoyed this one. Sure, there were occasional cheesy interactions, and Chandra's back didn't half heal quickly, but it pulled together the threads really nicely. Glad to see the mention of Bolas along with Sorin and Nahiri. I liked Chandra throughout - suitably laid-back (aha ha) and unapologetic; I liked Nissa's anxiety over whether to stay or go; I liked Jace's detachment and slight envy of Gideon; I liked Gideon and Tazri's interaction. And although it read just a little clunky, overall I liked Ugin's reaction - what's done is done, what can I learn, and ho hum - guess I'll be the one to still be here to deal with all the fallout when you lot have turned to dust. Figures. Bloody planeswalkers. I found it interesting he thinks Sorin will be less forgiving though - nothing in the previous stories implied to me that Sorin didn't want the titans dead.
So yep - at least it's all ended on a high and it segues into Shadows smoothly enough. Now my main hope for that block is that the point of Jace going there is remembered and not lost in whatever new crisis he walks in on. There has to be at least one significant interaction between Jace and Sorin in it all.
Yeah, after rereading The LIthomancer with current information it seems like Ugin could have killed them all along, and just told Sorin and Nahiri it was a bad idea so they would do what he wanted. That's fine, I suppose.

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.
I liked this as an ending story. It gives each of the gatewatch some development, set up for other stories and connects to SoI very organically.
The Ugin scene was fine, pretty much followed the same beats I felt it would. Though it is interesting to see Ugin being slightly antagonistic towards them later in the storylines.
I also like they left Zendikar as a wastelands with the seeds being a hopeful promise. Also can explain Nahiri being mad at Sorin, since Zendikar is nothing like it was before.

“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
Also, I liked this part, wether or not Jace's ignorance and ungratefulness was intended:
"I'll go to Innistrad and find Sorin. I'm not sure he'll be more help than Ugin has been, but he can't be much less."
Ugin has not been a help? Ugin told you about the leylines and gave you a huge information dump without which you could have neither captured Ulamog nor destroyed both titans!
What did Ugin say a bit earlier? Oh right:
"You, Jace Beleren, have proven to be an extremely arrogant and unreliable partner."
Today's article strongly suggested that Ugin could have killed the titans all those years ago if he wanted to. That's a massive retcon, but better a retcon than a ridiculous inconsistency of ability between old and new walkers.
Ugin never tried to kill the titans.
Sorin and Nahiri did, though, and failed, apparently multiple times even. So it kind of is a retcon, but not because of Ugin.
We know that Ugin did not want the Eldrazi destroying planes, so maybe he thinks they're a purifying system for the multiverse while they are in the Blind Eternities. As long as they were tethered they could still perform that function without eating planes. He could also just see it as keeping something alive because life and some sort of balance is important to him. I do wonder when they'll explore this.
What would be more satisfying: Zendikar poofing back into a lush plane again or taking a slow, sober amount of time to recover?
With all the ups and downs with BFZ, it's nice to see some sort of cost to the battle. And today's story did indicate that the plane will recover, with time. True, this goes against some of the summaries, stating that the growth was immediate, but someday Zendikar will be vibrant again.
I really loved this UR/OMF/MS. Chandra did it for me. She had some awesome moments.
Chandra used her hands to pull on her thighs and cross her own legs. She leaned back against the "chair," which looked a lot like fire-charred bone but, up close, didn't really feel like bone. She wondered what part of Ulamog's skull this had been—maybe it was from the back, where the titan's spinal musculature had exploded into shards of nothingness. She hoped it was from the front, between its jaw-structures, the faceplate that had turned toward her as it was consumed in fire. She leaned back against it and put her rough, callused hands behind her head.
"You've killed two living creatures that were older than worlds," said Ugin. "Without knowing their purpose, their role, the impact of their lives or their deaths—you risked this entire plane and unknown consequences beyond it to kill them. Because you could."
In the silence that followed, only Chandra spoke: "You're damned right we did."
"Tell your people not to interfere with my work. If I want a piece of one of the carcasses, I shall have it. If I want something left where it is, it stays."
Chandra shifted to stand between Ugin and the portion of Ulamog's skull she'd been using as a chair.
There were many more moments I loved, but these are some of the ones that stood out to me.

Slow recovery is fine. But I saw an opening to recover its lost mana that explains how the plane will recover its lost mana. But without Zendikar draining the Eldrazi, how exactly is the lost mana being recovered?
Never thought I'll wholeheartedly support Chandra, of all characters. Well done, story, well done.
On a side note, where is Ashaya? Nissa's connection to her was described in every damn place before, but apparently Nissa has new friends to play with now.
You expected an adventure world after Rise of the Eldrazi? Looks like you set yourself up for disappointment. No mistake on WotC's part.
The block could easily have been about exploring Zendikar for clues about the titans after they had all left, and would be faced in different blocks. For a time Ulamog was the only titan on Zendikar too. So yes, I hoped to see actual Adventure World and not all this Devoid, Colorless, Eldrazi, Wastes crap. The set was all about Eldrazi and it was Zendikar I had wanted to return to. Storyline reasons had other plans, but I am still disappointed that almost none of Zendikar's original flavor was there at all and it can only return in a THIRD revisit, whenever that might happen.
I found it interesting he thinks Sorin will be less forgiving though - nothing in the previous stories implied to me that Sorin didn't want the titans dead.
He meant less forgiving when someone ignores his commands/counsels, just like Jace did with Ugin, not concerning the Eldrazi in particular. It is a wise advice since Jace is going to meddle with Sorin's affairs in his homeplanet and with his ex-partner Nahiri.
Hopefully that is the end of this wretched storyline. This story was a decent way to end it at least. I'll accept Jace stewing over the information that he gets from Nissa before heading off to Innistrad but nothing else. I have no interest in reading about where fish go when after throwing temper tantrums.
The block could easily have been about exploring Zendikar for clues about the titans after they had all left, and would be faced in different blocks.
Isn't that kind of what Jace, Jori and Kiora did? Jori in particular tied very well to the adventure theme of the previous Zendikar block with her being a ruin explorer and everything, but focusing on that would have been a major disservice to the entire conflict. The Zendikari are trying to survive, trying to push back the Eldrazi or just finding someplace to live for at least one more day. Apart from some select heroes nobody has the time to go ruin diving, even if it was key to defeating the titans.
For a time Ulamog was the only titan on Zendikar too. So yes, I hoped to see actual Adventure World and not all this Devoid, Colorless, Eldrazi, Wastes crap. The set was all about Eldrazi and it was Zendikar I had wanted to return to.
What we want and what we expect should not be one and the same. I want a return to Lorwyn and yet criticizing WotC for not delivering on my "expectations" year after year after year is kind of a silly thing to do. Again, nobody in their right mind could expect an adventure world theme after Rise of the Eldrazi, even if it is something they want.
Storyline reasons had other plans, but I am still disappointed that almost none of Zendikar's original flavor was there at all and it can only return in a THIRD revisit, whenever that might happen.
I must have missed this, but what was Zendikar's first revisit?
Chandra being the kind of person that shows people affection by hitting them
Gideon talking another Blue character into doing exactly what he wanted without them realizing it until after the fact and then being really annoyed
Gideon and Jace's ongoing bromance in general
Chandra being utterly unimpressed by the millenia-old spirit dragon and mouthing off at him repeatedly
Chandra's hesitation at leaving Keral Keep helping her relate to Nissa's hesitance to leave Zendikar - a nice little bit of actual continuity
The way that Chandra and Nissa just click in a way that fits the two most instinctual colors without it feeling forced
Just Chandra in general, really
So yeah, really enjoyed the character beats here. The group dynamic of the Gatewatch is actually rounding into form quite well...right in time for the story to break away from them as Jace goes chasing a vampire and probably ends up finding a kor instead.
Storyline reasons had other plans, but I am still disappointed that almost none of Zendikar's original flavor was there at all and it can only return in a THIRD revisit, whenever that might happen.

Oh please, I've been on team Gideon x Chandra since I read the Purifying Fire.
Anyways, the story was great I loved seeing everyone interacting together. They should have multiple authors writing the stories all the time.
