It's like a WWE Tag-Team Championship match and Ulamog tagged his late partner.
Damn. Makes me wish Digges wrote for Ulamog as well. Ulamog does alot of heavy lifting that many readers may not noticed. He's literal, mountain-smashing; certainly a perfect foil to Kozilek's more gentle (some would say scheming) approach.
Oh man, that genjutsu on the poor fish (and poorly named Shen OMG)...
I always thought calamari was a side dish, snackers. Maybe it's appropriate as an appetizer; what a huge opening!
Kozilek, achieving more relevant destruction in 1 article than Ulamog has in the entire block so far.
There seems to be a limit to Kozilek's mind-control abilities though. Based on the article and Turn Against, it seems to either affect only smaller beings (by that I meant non-Kraken sized) or beings with a certain level of intellect (Well, Kiora seemed to be dismissing Lorthos's thought capabilities the entire article...), so perhaps it can't affect those who can't comprehend the idea of attempting to comprehend the Eldrazi.
Like everyone said, the "Spark protects planeswalkers from Titans' minor effects" seem to hold true, so the theory that the spark and the Eldrazi share some sort of common factor (that might be the energy the Hedrons channel) still holds possible.
As much as there would be impact in Kiora really perishing from this... I'm seeing "vague fate" as the more possible option now, since they want to abide by "dead is dead" while reserving planeswalkers for future storylines. I have this feeling we won't be seeing much of Kiora for the rest of the story and if we're lucky, we get the literal hindsight-humility story after the whole Gatewatch story (since from promotional material, Kiora's not involved in any of that).
Lorthos might be just a particularly huge octopus that did pretty much nothing in the end, but at least it appeared in the story and gave a closure to a printed Legendary Creature card, so its presence had some sort of medium-transit elegance there.
This, this is how the Eldrazi were meant to be written. Very few URs have given the Eldrazi the respect they deserved, but this one most definitely did. The descriptions of Kozilek's power were delightfully strange and terrifying, and it was refreshing to see the Eldrazi actually display their power onscreen. I'm usually not a big fan of the Worf Effect, when a strong character is defeated just to illustrate another character's strength, but I really enjoyed it here. Lorthos finally makes an appearance after being printed in Zendikar, and gets hyped up as Zendikar's most powerful creature, only to be torn in half without doing anything by Kozilek. Marvelous.
Even if I don't really like Kiora personally, I love her character. I like all the little insights into Merfolk culture she gives us, and it's refreshing to see her hubris crumble. Her sense of overwhelming fear and despair and the realization that she is insignificant is the heart of what eldritch horror is about, and it's about time we started seeing some of it.
It is getting rather difficult to see a way out of the Eldrazi predicament for Zendikar (and the home team). My guess is that the Old Guard (Ugin, Sorin, Nahiri?) will have to step in to close it out. Which may be when we finally see Emrakul, and hopefully aren't left with a cliffhanger for this one.
Wacky idea: how about our heroes go all 'Fantastic Voyage' and attack Kozilek from the inside? We could see a 'Kozilek's Pancreas' card!
Kelly Digges once again kills it with his new article.
Seeing an old legend from the original Zendikar block, Kiora being disillusioned, Kozilek being this mind-bending being of unimaginable power... By far my favourite BFZ story.
EPISODE 02: RETALIATION OF OB NIXILIS
Nissa witnesses the collapse of the hedron trap, her last hope for saving her world. As not one, but two titans rampage through Sea Gate, she sets her sights on the demon responsible, Ob Nixilis. If she can’t save Zendikar, at least she can destroy the being who led to her world’s end. But this time, Ob is ready for her.
I'm glad. After all that demon's put us through there's no way I want him to leave now. If we go, you go.

Kelly Digges did a superb job portraying Kozilek, and I agree with others: wish they'd given Ulamog a similarly apt portrayal.
As for Nissa vs Ob Nixilis Round 2, I certainly hope Omnath shows up to aid her, because an Old Walker just got his Spark back and already showed that he wants Zendikar destroyed.
Something tells me that in the Nissa v Ob Nixilis fight Ob Nixilis will send a blast at Nissa that looks like it could kill her but Ashaya will step in the way. Nissa then becomes enveloped in rage and somehow calls forth Omnath. Then swats Nixilis into one of the eldrazi titans.

Thanks to XenoNinja at Heroes of the Plane Studios for the sig.
So what is Jace doing through all of this? We know Gideon is going to whip his sural at Ulamog, Nissa and Ob are having a DBZ fight, Chandra will spam fire in every direction, and Kiora is getting a bad case of the deads. Jace just seems the odd man out here, unless they're planning on a mind fight between him and Kozilek.
Why hasn't Ob peaced out yet? One Eldrazi titan is basically a death wish, two is just asking to get swatted into oblivion.
I consider Kiora alive unless told otherwise. While I usually agree that we don't need to be spoonfed literally every bit of information, but something as big as a character's death shouldn't be merely implied. You can do that if you have a manageable amount of characters, but if you have a cast of 20+, being subtle does more harm than good.
At any rate, I'm increasingly amused at the monsters being assembled on stage right now. It is a little bit like a godzilla movie with multiple monsters fighting among each other, with poor humans running around their feet like confused ants.
I hope Nissa is going to summon Omnath just to continue the trend. Too bad this block didn't have a major converted mana cost theme, that would have been perfect.
Ob seems like the type of guy who wants to actually watch the world burn not just cause it to. As for Kozilek. That was great an honestly in a weird way it makes me like the way they wrote Ulamog more. Ulamog compared to the other two is a chump, and he is simple. He is hunger, he just wants to consume. Why who knows but thats what he does but the other two are so far beyond him that the basic concept of what they do isnt comprehensible.

Ob Nixils planes walked away after summoning Kozilek, didn't he?
In any case, loved the shout out to an original Zen legend that didn't get any story. Sad that they're killing off all the original Zen legends, though.
Edit: not worth fixing typos, posting from my phone.
Well that was nutty. Diffidently better written than our last few. I got a few Revelations from this one, and I'm sure 2 of mine arent the common notion among you all.
The first one I'm sure many will be unhappy with (I am too, for what its worth, but I get what they were doing at least now) and thats about "how poorly Ula was treated. I don't think he was treated poorly now, just got the rough end of the stick. Honestly when Zen first came out, the titans were, true, bad ass, but they werent really different... They were just 3 weird things that sucked up the world. Out of them you cared slightly more about Emrakul, because it was the biggest. Ula and Koz both didnt really have any characteristics. They wanted them to be "Incomprehensible" so they wrote them that way... cept it came off bland.
Look, We know when we see Emrakul... which they'll save for another block 3-4 years from now, it will be wayyyyyyyy worse than these too. Look at the freakin' card. So he has a "Name" His name is "bad ass, gunna take literally everything you got to maybe stop him." Which leaves us with the 2 problem titans... how do we differ with them. So they split "Body" and "mind" Koz comes off "better written" I agree, but thats because he comes off weird and scary. I'm sure as we go down the line, we'll find Koz's power isnt from his never ending spawn, but from his powers and their effects. Stuff like madness and space distortion.
And when you think about it like that the writing makes sense. They served it so the "easier to get, spawn creepy crawlies" come first. Follow that up with how literally strong the titan is. Then throw the scary "powered" one into the mix.
Soooo I'm not saying I like it, but at least now I get why they wrote it like that.
The second bit is while I liked the "plane cleaning" idea some of us put foreward... its probably wrong now. I always assumed the rocks that Koz left behind were some kinda blank slate. Not literal drained rocks, that are so eaten you can see the blind eternities behind it. Kinda like... Lips? The skin is so thin, you can see whats behind it.
Soooooo I'll count that theory gone. They just eat in different ways. I think Ula Drains it of mana (devoid) and Koz drains it of substance.
I also like what they did with Kiora. I wasnt a huge fan of her, but blue green is always a weird color alinement. I like the irony in her getting her ass kicked by the thing that inspired her. I want to see what she does with this now, which is more than I thought before hand.
I got a feeling that Zendikar still has one option for escape. Saving a tiny tiny bit of the plane. We know nissa has access to the planes physical soul. I bet they'll in the end, barely survive it, and since the souls with her, they can start fresh. Probably figure out some way to have the plane heal... slowly. I still think they got a shot to win this, but they're gunna need the old team back to kick it back into their favor and even then, I think jace will have finally figured out a way to kill at least one of them (cough cough, ulamog.)
I dont think they will be able to Arc them away to a new blank plane to start over a Zen 2.0... least not now vensers dead as hell.
Is kiora dead yet? Also the edrazi titans brushing with each other? What is that supposed to mean? Some alien gesture?
Kiora isn't going to die in this story, and probably not anytime in the foreseeable future. There's way too much character development going on, and she's way too popular of a character.
I kind of saw this lesson in humility coming after the previous story where she thought she could kill Ulamog singlehandedly.
Also, after Kozilek was spoiled, I thought that he could be involved in some kind of mind control schtick after seeing the floating blades over the guy's head in Turn Against. This story basically confirms it.
Well Kozilek Does have the 12 dollar Inquisition of Kozilek card dealie, so for what its worth, he always had the "mind bending will" thing before this too. Turn against just clarified it. ANd you're right, they've invested too much in her (changing her from gurrauqa in her duels appearance to trickster got tricked now.) to just take it all away now. Plus, the sister thing. They didnt establish her for no reason. It only makes sense they want to revisit the sister at some point for a character arch point.
Is kiora dead yet? Also the edrazi titans brushing with each other? What is that supposed to mean? Some alien gesture?
I think it was just a jab at people like us who figured out that Koz was coming and were like "its going to be a titan vs titan Godzilla battle!" Just a joke of "you guys asked for it they are gunna fight!... NOPE! they are just going to eat people."
Is kiora dead yet? Also the edrazi titans brushing with each other? What is that supposed to mean? Some alien gesture?
More like:
Ula: Hey!
Kozi: Hey!
ula: dude where were you I almost got sealed again.
Kozi: almost?
Ula: I had them right where I wanted them... but thanks for the save.
Kozi: oh yeah prove it you take those bugs while I deal with the only thing here that is an actual threat. Oh and by the way I didn't save you I was planning on have a good laugh at you after I finished killing everything here.
OMG wow wow, OK this one was AWESOME. This was one of the first UR's that actually elicited some emotion from me since the Origin stories. So many awesome moments:
- Lorthos!!! I was so excited to see this crazy octopus. Lorthos was one of the most disappointingly underdeveloped characters from Zendikar and FINALLY we get to see him. I was giddy with excitement when Kiora summoned him.
- Kozilek is seriously terrifying. I could picture Shen's eyes going dark and the obsidian blades suddenly appearing over his head and it gave me chills. I love where this is going. The Eldrazi are not just hungry monsters but powerful unique beings with different but equally scary forms of destruction. I hope they continue to flesh out and display Ulamog's scariness.
- The battle with Lorthos and Kozilek was such an awesome Godzilla-like moment. And it truly displayed the horror that is Kozilek. Like Kiora said, Lorthos is one of the oldest and most powerful creatures on Zendikar and he was just torn to shreds with ease by Kozilek. Holy crap. I have no idea how Zendikar can survive at this point.
- Kiora's portrayal was perfect. We saw some great character development here as she was finally humbled and learned the error of her hubris. Kelly Digges is truly the man...his stories are always fantastic. I really don't think Kiora is dead. Any fate that is left ambiguous usually always means that the characters will be back. Which means that I'm pretty sure the only for sure dead PW (from the current roster) that we have right now is Venser. Plus there needs to be some resolution with the sister.
As for next week:
I'm glad that Ob hasn't left the plane yet. I was hoping to see a little more of him and another showdown with Nissa should be good. Since the UR seems to be Nissa-centric we can bet it might be penned by Kimberly. Let's just hope she can do justice to what should be an epic showdown.
The Magic website goes on holiday break next week for two weeks. Does this mean we need to wait 3 weeks until we see what's next??
^^^ oo that means we should be getting a big pre-break preview card eh.
--
On another note, that's the second time we've read from Kiora's stories where there's a distinction between "calling" a creature and summoning them. For example she wanted to gain Arixmethes' loyalty so she could summon it when needed. I imagine that wouldn't technically entail planeswalking it to wherever she is, so could it mean the real Lorthos isn't actually dead since it was quite clear that he was nowhere close to sea gate? Sounds like a stretch just asking it though.
Now we're talking. Easily the best Eldrazi-centric story this block, and Kelly Digges continues to knock it out of the park. I like seeing his name at the top of the page on Wednesday morning.
I think Kiora is being too hard on herself; Lorthos plus two of Kiora's followers is actually the perfect team for taking out Kozilek. She just got blown out by Turn Against, and it's hard to blame her for that in game one.
Crazy story today. Lorthos sounded powerful, Kosi sounded terrifying. And the ending. It's pretty ambiguous so I'll go with Kiora being KO'D or more interestingly enslaved. Wonderful work by Kelly as usual.
Edit: Another option is merely that she planeswalked out. I mean isn't the moment in the Blind Eternities pitch black
There is no greater payoff than that of well deserved hubris. Kiora reminds me of captain Ahab from Moby Dick, except that the difference here is that she probably didn't die at the end. She's even got her own 'white' whale in Ulamog.,,
