Also Sarkhan isn't selfish from his perspective. To him dragons are - and I quote - "freakin awesome, mate". It never occurs to him that other people might not be fond of having giant winged predators living in the same area as them. And if he does, he probably only shakes his head and pities the fool who cannot admire the majesty of dragons. Black doesn't make much sense for him. To be honest I never really saw the black in him during his mad times either... I guess that was Bolas' influence.
However, I also don't really buy the blue in using timetravel:
A) I think the tools to be used matter little in determining one's colour alignment, the motivation for using those tools seems much more important in my opinion. But this is a bold claim considering that this is the official explanation from the guy who maintains and grooms the colour pie, so whatever, but there's still:
B) Sarkhan didn't really intend to use timetravel, he was basically shoved through the whole process by a series of events that ultimately led him to go to Tarkir, step through the portal and encase Ugin in the cocoon. It was never really his plan to change Tarkir, it was merely just a side effect of saving Ugin, something to which he was pushed to by Ugin's whispers in the first place.
But I will wait until we get to the UR dealing with Sarkhan. Maybe he had an enlightment or something that justifies him adopting blue. I'm not going to judge his character development, before we actually get to read about it.
I agree black was a bad color for him as well. About blue:
A) Thats indeed a bold statement. As far as I know personality might define a color but colors are not defined by personality alone. Means are actually very important as magic colors are above all the kind of magic you use.
B) Sometimes big changes change tour colors. Garruk didnt intend to be corrupted but corruption still made him black. Sarkhan's sudden change can be seen as a blue version of "corruption".
I put forth that Garruk's condition and Sarkhan's are completely different. The black corruption (that sounds like a cool Metal Band name) twisted Garruk's Magic, but also his psyche. He became a monster. Sarkhan... just so happened to time travel. Time travel via colorless magic. It's not very comparable.
Hey, if he lost ambition, maybe that will keep him out of the story going forward. Tarkir is a really dumb story, due in no small part to the idiocy rampant in his character. Then again, a lack of ambition sure hasn't kept Jace from sticking his nose into every story, even ones he's very tangentially related to despite being the guildpact.
Or maybe being part blue now introduces logic into Sarkhan and he can change his crazy ways.
He didnt not only time travel and come back as normal. He changed the fate of people in tarkir, causing changes in everyone including himself. Basically all characters from Khans have different colors in DTK, although he is remarkably thr only one that get mote colors instead of less.
Seems they like to just default things to blue. I think I remember Maro talking about other abilities they didn't know what to do so they just made it blue.
